This is a static copy of In the Rose Garden, which existed as the center of the western Utena fandom for years. Enjoy. :)
I couldn't find a thread for this, which I thought was a shame.. I'm itching for some Utena quotes! So here we go. Post your favourite Utena quotes.
Sadly, I don't really have many.. Thus why I make a thread to steal everyone else's quotes.
Here's the classic one:
"If the egg's shell does not break... the chick will die without being born. We are the chick; the egg is the world. If the world's shell does not break, we will die without being born. Break the world's shell! For the sake of revolutionizing the world!" - Touga

"Yeah baby, you've lit the fire to my heart."
I've found, oddly enough, that Utena isn't especially quotable. All the great stuff needs context and a lot of the deeper things are expressed visually/symbolically. I remember years ago trying to find a good Touga quote to put in a signature and coming up short. I scoured the scripts and nothing quite fit. Something like "Wasn't your prince someone like me?" can't relate the significance of the scene(s) in which it's said. "There's no such thing as miracles" isn't adequate to sum up Juri nor have the right impact on someone unfamiliar with the motivation behind the comment. But that's just my experience, I only quote the series when I want to be cryptic and as often I'll relate a scene (like talking about surfing elephants) rather than say a line. I do always feel extra special when I can work Utena references into a conversation.

Ah, I can't remember the exact quotes for these, so they're kinda paraphrased...
Kozue: "When everything around you is impure, you have no choice but to become impure yourself."
Tokiko: "Perhaps geniuses are incapable of human emotion."
Juri (to Utena): "Show me the miracle you talked about! You can prove to me that it exists with your sword!"

Hey, guys! Don't forget about the series scripts section! If you need to find a quote, it's all there.

I forgot! Yasha, thank you!
"Hello? Yes. I was looking at the stars. I don't want to look at the real stars."
-- Anthy. Episode 33, "The Prince who runs in the night."

I kind of understand what Ragnarok meant. Most of the quotes wouldn't really work on their own like that but I still love the script.
Mamiya: "Eternity means lasting forever, right? For years, decades, centuries, millennia, eons, and on and on. My life may be just a moment, but... Eternity means that this moment lasts billions of billions of years, without end. I... I... I want eternity. "
Mikage (to Utena): "I see. It's that memory that's been supporting you up until now. No need to be ashamed. Because the memory you possess is a worthy one. Only those with beautiful memories are allowed to wish, "If only those days could last forever, if only I could still be what I was back then." I know that you're the same as myself. Your eyes are like those people who can't help wanting to make memories last forever.

Does Shiori's entire elevator speech count? I know it by heart.
There are a few others I love.
"You remind me of the Dios I once loved. But you can't become my Prince."
-Anthy, episode 39.
"A marvelous planitarium, don't you think? With it, I can project fairytale illusions onto the walls and show the innocent their dreams. A shadow play for those who desperately wish for something eternal, for the power of miracles... but no place exists above this room."
-Akio, episode 38. Actually, this one is the english quote, but I like it better than the original. Sue me!
And seconding Maarika's post. Those are two of my favorites!

My favourite is Touga's quote (to Miki) "If you won't defend your precious things, people will take them from you, Miki"
Next is Miki, in his second duel "Your sword will never defeat my sword"
I'm not sure whether I cited them correctly... but.. ah well

The movie Shiori quote about turning into cars is priceless as well: (I forgot the exact wording, sorry) "It was a big mistake to think that you're the only one who can turn into a car. I'm a car now too!"

Utena: And someday, together we'll-
Anthy: Someday... together?
Someday together we'll shine.
can't forget that!!

Utena: Wakaba said a while ago that there's no such thing as a "wrong" love.
Utena: That love wasn't something you can control.
Utena: But there really are people you mustn't fall in love with, aren't there.
Anthy: I don't know much about that.
Anthy: But, I think that just like Wakaba-san said, "love" has a part of it that you can't control.
I just loved those lines first time I heard them, if only because I thought that here, Anthy was being honest.

Oh, there's another Mikage quote that I actually cite in real life more often than I should. (Wording might be slightly off, but I'm too lazy to check)
"You stand here before me because of the illusion you've created! That's what allows you to enter the duelling arena! Am I wrong? In the end, you and I are the same."

Mamiya: But, I wonder if the flowers themselves are happy, being forced to last so long. Eternity doesn't exist in this world, does it? It's just that one could think that a heart that longs for eternity is beautiful.
Mikage: That sort of sacrifice is what is always demanded.
Akio: There are no outsiders here... Except for you, that is.
...Or basically all the Mikage episodes I guess.

One of my favorites:
Ruka: Juri, she's a fool, because she doesn't realize that her miracle is standing atop someone else's sacrifice.
But that's the sort of person who receives miracles!
Such a painful quote -_-
Offline
"But you can never be my prince, because you're a girl."
Damn, that's just COLD.
Offline
Nanami: This girl scares me.
Anthy: Really, Nanami? Thank you!
-Romance of the Dancing Girls
Nanami: I won't go with them when they come to take me away! I won't!
Keiko: Miss Nanami, is something wrong?
Nanami: Oh it's nothing! Nothing at all! La lala lala lala lala!

A spot has opened up on my wall, and since I've nothing on me to put there, I've decided to make it a little Shiori area. So, I painted one of my favorite quotes from her there. (This one is from the English version as well. You know what? There are a lot of lines that I honestly liked better in the dub, probably because I prefered Shiori in the dub. I just like her voice more.)
"But now, now she and I are equal... No! I've beaten her! I'm the one who's always been there in her heart. I've beaten her in the end."
I'll probably end up painting the rest of her monologue as well.

Utena: Shiori-san seems so different from before.
Anthy: You think so?
Anthy: She hasn't changed. Not one bit.
I thought it was hilarious, and scary, how easily Anthy saw through Shiori. 'Like minds', I guess.
Utena: Is Akio-san trying to found a harem or something? Taking Nanami in and all...
Anthy: Well, my brother draws no distinction between women.
Utena: Is that true?
Anthy: I'm joking.
Utena: Of course! Akio-san couldn't be that kind of person.
And my personal favorite...
Anthy: Utena-sama. Have you heard of Cantarella?
Utena: Cantarella?
Anthy: It's the name of a deadly poison that the Italian Borgia family used in the past.
Utena: Really...
Anthy: How do you like those cookies? I baked them.
Utena: What a coincidence.
Utena: That tea is poisoned too.
Anthy: Really?
Anthy: It's quite delicious.
Utena: So are these cookies.

I am a student who has dedicated all of myself to Nanami-san.
I have always had my eye on Nanami-san...and only Nanami-san.
Nanami-san is incredible, with purity, nobility and great beauty, protecting the weak, detesting all evil, entirely for justice in the Academy.
But, I know... I know Nanami-san's naked face.
Never dirtying her own hands, her stoic manner in which she merely watches the suffering from a safe distance, certainly is the proper form for she who rules the Academy from the shadows.

As a fan of the english version, I've always loved the babble Nanami spouts before completely turning into a cow:
Nanami: I can't take this any mooooooore. Am I having deluuuuuuuuuusions.

Okay guys. This was too much for me:
C-ko: Extra! Extra! Extra!
C-ko: It's complete! The all-purpose robot made from the essences of science!
C-ko: A robot does not age. A robot does not tire.
C-ko: I catch the monkeys.
C-ko: You are superior to humans.
C-ko: A robot is superior. I catch many monkeys.
C-ko: You cannot become worried.
C-ko: A robot does not worry.
C-ko: When I see a monkey, I catch it quickly!
C-ko: A robot is not lonely.I have all the monkeys I have caught. A robot can work indefinitely, and can catch many monkeys.
Tokiko: But those who look at you get lonely.
This made me cry badly

Utena: "So, please...don't fear this world where you and I can meet."
Anthy: "Because I am the Rose Bride...because I am a doll with no heart...I thought that no matter what befell my body, my heart wouldn't feel the pain."
I don't know the romanji for the end of the phrase, "Grant me the power to revolutionize the world!" (When they draw the swords.) Anyone got it?
