This is a static copy of In the Rose Garden, which existed as the center of the western Utena fandom for years. Enjoy. :)

So.... yuri penguin action?
The text on the site seems slightly dark.
The website has two messages — one in white:
We share all my love and all your punishment.
When the website is reloaded, the other message appears in black:
I will inform those of you who won't amount to anything.

I think the fact that Evangelion's made like a billion dollars since its release completely refutes the idea that the people want nothing but silly entertainment. It's simply the fact that people who can make these kinds of shows are very, very rare. The whole idea of a "mainstream audience" is complete bull, artists only make make good art when they make it for themselves, which is in this case anime directors who like to cynically deconstruct their own work.

There are 6 commercials on the series' website. I still can't understand what the hell is going on, but it's very pretty and has some hilarious penguin action going on.

The premiere isn't too far away. I'm excited

Hm, found this on another board. Anyone know what it says?
As excited as I am, I'm finding it easy not to get my hopes up tooo high because I don't see how it could possibly outdo Utena.. but I'm really looking forward to seeing this

I know I'm being stupid, but i can't believe there are actually going to be penguins in this show.
YuGiOh Abridged... you messed me up big time.
As to being better or worse than Utena.... at the very least the uniforms are better.

... THIS MAKES NO SENSE. Random penguins, random transformation scenes, random everything. It was very cool but didn't really deliver a lot in the substance department. It all looks and sounds freaking beautiful though and the penguins are adorable. Sexy ending animation and song. Overall the show is very lighthearted with some dark twists and hints of it becoming a lot more serious later on.
Here's the opening and ending animations:

Seeing someone get something ripped out of their chest as part of the transformation was nostalgic.

Okay, Gio needs to sticky this topic and change it's name.
If there's a place best suited for discussing Penguindrum, it's this forum.
Offline
Yeah, I agree! I'll sticky this temporarily -- ANN says the show premieres in a week, is that right? -- and change its name to something with penguins in it.
I. Fucking. Love. PENGUINS!

I found subs of the show today and I'm going to be trying my damnest not to compare everything to Utena when I watch it.
ETA: Finished watching the OP and failed miserably at avoiding comparisons.
ETA2: What in the world did I just watch?

I just watched the first episode and can I say now, I think I'm in love! The animation is absolutely beautiful, especially on the color aspect. The music is fantastic and oh did the transformation scene make me so happy. The penguins are so absolutely adorable that it makes me giggle every time they are on screen. Very much looking forward to the next episode!

saw the first episode. my god it does remind you of utena (incest on the first ep.?), it was awsome to se ikuhara's work adapt to these modern times, cant wait for more...

Saw it, loved it, can't wait for seconds. The premise is just as bizarre as one might expect coming from Ikuhara, but damn am I already super invested in the siblings and the mystery of what the heck is going on. As Ragnarok mentioned, the pacing is great; the plot moves along at a brisk clip but there's still plenty of those trademark atmospheric moments. I'm just worried that the series is going to have a hardcore Downer Ending based on the first episode. I like these kids, so it might be hard to watch their existential-incest-penguin crisis.

NGL I was expecting a sword to come out

The symbols on the bottom of the official web site have some hidden meaning.
Speculation: One of the symbols on the bottom of the site says 95. The show mentions a red train, and one such train is associated with the Marunouchi station. Because of that, some speculate that the series might be related to or at least reference the sarin terrorist attacks that happened in the Marunouchi station in 1995.
Man... you guys think Ikuhara would go there? If the characters are somehow related (maybe victims) to the terrorist attack it would be a rather twisted twist (lol?)
Offline
Or it could simply be an homage, a "We don't forget what happened in 1995" sort of nod as well.
Offline
True true, but the 95 symbol is also a prominent part of the opening animation. It appears and is suddenly surrounded by hundreds of evil penguin smilies. I just get a feeling if it is a reference to the attack it could be a bigger part of the show.
I'm also curious why the three main penguins have numbers on their backs but the black one doesn't.

Because the black one doesn't need a number because she is a hat/possibly demonic entity.
After the OP, I was able to distance myself from Utena because the siblings actually have a positive relationship (so far). Still, that scene where these two kids are talking about apples made me think of Kanae. I really liked the subway imagery and the massive amounts of mood whiplash.
I'm hoping we'll see more of the school girl in the next episode.

Just watched it and I'm totally hooked. So much detail, just begging for analysis! Colors, animation, amazing. Can't wait for more! So happy it will be 24 episodes.

You're probably right. Damn Ikuhara just makes it so hard not to over think things

Right after Hiwari dies, when the red haired brother calmly says something like "it must be our punishment", I wonder what he's referring to.. What did they do??

WHAT THE FUCK DID I JUST WATCH

Having just finished the first episode, the first thing I have to say is how much I am in love with the animation! Even though I could never do it and don't want to, I am intrigued by animation in general. The art style, of course, is amazing but overall it's very refreshing to see limited animation being used in a way that is creative and mood-setting even while avoiding excessive frames. It also flows in that way that limited animation doesn't usually do; really, it's superb!
Nerdiness aside, I think I'm definitely going to stick with this series. So far it's providing a nice balance of light-hearted comedy while still hinting that there is something underneath the surface, in that way Ikuhara does so well. I doubt this series will be as psychological and symbolic as Utena, but I'm still excited about it!

Kanba (the red haired brother) comes across as a fatalist to me. So that's why I think he says that, artemis.
