Actually, those are Teddydrums. Maybe this project, whatever it is, will elaborate on their side of the symbolism in the series. As far as I can remember, they didn't obviously symbolize anything...

Considering how soon this is coming out, a retelling does seem kinda pointless.  Personally, I'd much prefer a well-done sequel (possibly with Himari and Masako and Ringo remembering more and more, thus drawing them all back into the penguindrum world, towards an ending as hinted by the group poster at the end of ep 24); if not that, a spin-off focusing on a lesser char. continuing on the same timeline will also be to my personal taste.  But, knowing Ikuhara and his blatant refusal to sequel SKU, a retelling do seem the most likely thing he'd do for MP regardless how much much new ground such a project could cover.
