"Oh Jesus tits, the president's wife has been bitten by the trouser snake, one of nature's most venomous innuendous reptiles!"
"NEVER FEAR, MRS. ROBINSON! I, brave prince of the world, am here!"
"Oh no! The poison is causing her to swoon!"
"Good thing I have mastered the tourniquet/suction method!" *SPLEEERCH SCHKIIIIIITTT PTOOIE PTOOIE*

"You call that nipple reduction surgery? Honey, HONEY, take a look at THESE!!"
"Mr. Chairman, you never mentioned you were the undefeated Twister champion."
"Well, Mr. President, the key is to slick yourself with a ton of vaseline. Here, try it out."
"Wow, you're right, now other people can't try to knock me down."

Crystalwren, you make some very valid points, and the nature of Juri's attachment to Shiori definitely bears questioning. But just because someone might be terrible or have terrible aspects about them doesn't mean they are impossible to love. Also, it seems like Shiori did all of her manipulating after Juri fell for her, so maybe in their early days, Shiori was much closer to what Juri currently envisions her to be.
And oh my god, you guys are a riot.
Edit: MAYBE THEY WERE USING THIS?!

I admit, I always thought they were posing a bit strangely.
As for Shiori's not so wonderful personality... Well, hormones can let you overlook such things to a degree, can't they?

Shiori basically screams "I'm weak, be my strength!"; strong people with protective instincts will be drawn towards her regardless of her stereotypical Japanese girly pettiness (which probably just makes her seem all the smaller aka more needing of cherishing from Juri's POV).

I just realized that Movie Touga might not actually be a victim of rape: it could be that Mr. Kiryuu wanted to check the boy for body lice prior to letting him settle down in his spotless household; Touga, naughty urchin that he was, did not make it easy for his new dad, thus why the chasing into the cabbage field

Man, since reading this thread and cracking all these jokes and fics over the "out of left field" business, I'm started to feel like I have a very good chance of working for one of those English anime licensing companies, many of which excels at making every english-dubbed shown on tv series nonsexual in spite of any great number of evidences to the contrary.

Like a venus flytrap. There's a reason she is directly referred to as a parasite. Her insecurities drive her to dominate others. In her own way, she's a less subtle prototype of the Rose Bride. The witch who plays princess for power.

Uno mas? Uno mas. I promise.
It would not take take a close friend to discern his amusement, for there was nothing subtle about his smirk. Secretive and knowing, like the slight smile of a porn shop attendant. One languid leg draped over the other.
"I deeply appreciate your kind offer, but I'm afraid I'm unworthy of your seminar, sempai, " the boy said.
The boy was sincere. Such a picture of innocence. But, regardless of such a pristine display, his thoughts turned to the long lean frame before him. How fun it would be to grip ever-so-tightly.
"I see. An excellent intellect like yours would have been just the thing I was looking for." What could he do with such an opening? It was begging for attention. "Tell me if you ever change your mind. You won't regret it."
His gaze followed the boy's every retreating step. Slowly, tenderly, he lifted his GeneriCola to his cheek.
"Don't be upset, Bertha," came his rapturous whisper. "He will never know the depths of our passion. Now. Prepare for the secret of Nemuro Memorial Hall."
The unzipping echoed through the halls, through the coffins, past the minds and futile dreams of slumbering students, drifting to the fields where buffalo have yet to roam - where the wondrous sexual eggplant lies in wait beneath the fertilizer of consciousness.
El fin.

Could all those "deeper, go deeper" lines be his cat purrs to the videos he was watching in his elevator video booth, while innocent students spill their hearts out on the other side thinking they're getting counseling?

I guess that Akio and Tougas's bedroom scenes could be taken as entirely symbolic - the scenes they have in the planetarium clearly are.
Maybe all the sex in the series is symbolic? Like Utena's tryst with Akio represents her allowing him to replace the Prince in her heart? (Note that he doesn't bring up the encounter when he tries to shame Utena in the planetarium in the penultimate episode.) The only ones that don't work under that theory are Akio and Anthy's sessions.
Hmm. So not does SKU have a clear metaphor for sex in nearly every episode, but the sex itself is symbolic.
my head is full of fuck
EDIT: Wow, that typo really changes the way that sentence should be read.

“Everything in the world is about sex except sex. Sex is about power.”
(I was gonna say something else, but then an Oscar Wilde quote appeared and ate my other thoughts.)

Oh my, thread resurrection

For me, I wonder what's the significance in having Akio deflower Utena in a hotel in the outside world (where many fans insist Akio has no influence on) instead of right in the Planetarium (the seat of his power)? And the sexy car scenes showing the "Ends of the World" . . . why do those take place on highways outside Ohtori? Why not simply have Akio drive the kids around campus as he show them his maddening "Ends of the World", if Akio's might is really just limited to Ohtori?

Maybe he's just showing off the fact that he doesn't need special powers to seduce and manipulate. I still feel that he has some degree of magic (or whatever you want to call what he does) outside of the school.

Sometimes I wonder if all of Akio's sexual encounters actually take place on his couch, and that it's his magic projector of mindscrew that makes it look like otherwise (though admittedly, the Akio/Utena scene is one that I'm still on the fence about). With Touga, for instance, considering that we see his bedroom a couple of times in the first arc:
Note how the curtains are similar to the one we see in the silhouetted scene further up the thread. Maybe when he and Akio are together, the latter's trying to use some psychological tactic on him by creating the illusion that he's getting fucked in his own bed -- the same one he shags so many girls in, at that. I guess it's a stretch to think of it that way (particularly when I give myself headaches when I think of them and other characters apparently watching the duels from a distant tower, bearing in mind that the arena is actually the planetarium room) but it's just an idea.
Similarly, in the car scenes, perhaps Akio is actually just driving around the campus and it's his projector that makes it seem like a highway; alternatively, there's no real car ride at all and his passengers just end up sitting in his couch. I guess there's a number of ways you could look at them; the often-impossible entrances that the car tends to make don't exactly help matters.
Back on topic: I've loved the reactions in this thread from early on, because I do get royally irritated by overly-heteronormative views of SKU. Sure, I could see how people might miss a lot of the subtext, but to not only not realise the fact that Juri has clearly romantic feelings for Shiori but get pissed off at the very idea of it... My idea of retaliating against that line of thinking was to make a big gay photoset on Tumblr, because really.

As do I, but someone berated me for my posts upthread as being unfit forumite practice, thus making it impossible for me to continue reacting to what the original poster posted (at least not here on IRG). I was also berated for writing my Out of Left Field crack fic too, so its successive parts will not show up here in this forum either.

Via this degree of unlimited interpretation, one can similarly argue that the arrows showing up in Nemuro's past ep. to point at various objects are all really pointing at a magically invisible Anthy, who was there in secret to do all the magic tricks (like reversing time) that powerless Akio could not do on his own. Oh, and she was really the lab coat wearing assistant who was pushing the coffin around terrorizing Mikage (like in Seinen Kakumei)
Reversely speaking, one could also argue that Utena really did die after the swords rushed her, and when Anthy walked out on Akio, she's walking out on the apathetic, materialistic, power-hungry world via suicide (like in Frav Eva's stunning fic Blackboard Messiah)

I don't have any particular opinions on whether he has power on the outside world or not, but I took it as him bringing them into the ~grown up world~ to do "grown up stuff". Though the interpretation that he's using his projections to fuck with their minds in this case as well, also works.

If we're gonna stretch the interpretation that far, presumably just to fit the "outside world where Akio wields magic is really inside Ohtori", then . . . wouldn't the church building where Touga/Saionji met a coffined Utena, and where Utena met "Dios" and "Witch", also have to be inside Ohtori? How does that work?
Unless . . . "Ohtori Academy" is actually mobile (above like the giant castle car in the movie), thus casting its projections upon various different locations (like the "time reverse" items - butterfly specimen, unmelting snow - around Tokiko's house)?
Akio = Driver of Ohtorimobile?
Or, could it be that the Unside Down Castle is really a spacecraft, and that alien Akio is piloting it around to cast projects wherever he wants it?

C'mon, the upside-down castle is obviously the Dark Tower.
Maybe the reason Akio doesn't enter the outside world is that the outside world literally does not exist anymore, or has at least been separated from Ohtori by magic. Whether this magic was done by Akio or Anthy is up for debate.
