Japan is on holiday (Obon summer festival where they honor the deceased) so I guess some tv shows are going on a week hiatus. No worries everyone! The show will be back next week emot-smile

So I caught up with Penguindrum!! I love it, it's getting better with every episode. I admit I just skimmed the first two and last two pages of this thread, so I'm sorry if I repeat anything anyone else already said.

My thoughts:
- LOVE the opening and ending songs. Can't wait to get my hands on the full version.
- The animation is absolutely beautiful. So bright, colorful and clean.
- I like how the story is slowly unfolding to you. The character development is well-paced too.
- Ringo is a creepy stalker and I nearly cried with laughter when Himari-Alien started calling her outrageously bad things (not even really a spoiler, but whatevs).
- I am hesitant to instantly draw parallels between these characters and Utena ones because they deserve independent consideration. It is only episode 5 after all.
- Ikuhara keeps throwing in tidbits that are so Utena-esque, like the roses behind Kanda when he's schmoozing the girl on the train and the other various details you all have mentioned. I was worried in the first episode that Ikuhara would be a one-trick pony, but so far my fears are allayed.
- PENGUIN#4 IN THE OPENER IS SO CUTE OMGAWWD.
- Cannot wait to learn more about Juri-like character (I know I said no parallel-drawing, but I don't remember her name).

I'm a bit sad there'll be no episode 6, but I can't wait for the next one.

I find it really strange to have a character that looks (appearance-wise) like a Juri clone to be voiced by Yui Horie. I'm really interested in her story more than anyone else right now. Ringo coming in at a close second. I'm also hoping to see more of her mom, simply because of her Minako-tastic VA.

Ikuhara has admitted that he's quite fond of using a trio of identical characters to carry comedy and certain plot devices. I'd be sorely disappointed if there wasn't a set in Penguindrum.

I didn't know he said that! that's really neat:) and it makes a lot of sense, hahah. I'd have been disappointed too, I'm glad Mawaru Penguindrum is shaping up to be pretty fascinating. I found it hard to get into at first, unlike Utena.

Yes, episode 6 is out.

And it was lovely. etc-love I find it extremely enjoyable how they're getting darker and darker each week.

Also, hello "desire to gain eternity". I swear, hadn't I known Ikuhara was directing this show, this would have made me realize it. Along with the symbolism of the black cats appearing and disappearing, Ringo being underwater, her arguing parents taking the shape of her otter and kappa doll... which by the way are freaking adorable, I'd totally buy the otter one. Make it happen, Ikuhara! Make it happen!

And I thought last episode was a WHAM episode. Not only did this episode completely smash my original theories about the diary, but also it disproved my initial theory about the black penguin in the opening sequence.

Spoiler: I thought Ringo had serious issues before, but her desire to become her dead sister by acting out a "what-could-have-been" goes way beyond everything I expected.

On an Utena related note, Shoma talked about how miracles require sacrifice in the episode seven teaser. Juri's story arc begins in episode seven. This cannot be a coincidence.

Also, Ringo owns a Death Note.

ETA: Waitwaitwait. There's a Penguindrum Novel? How come I didn't know about this until I poked around TVTropes today? It's being translated here.

I just appreciate that they've acknowledged the parallel. The first thing I thought when I realized she was writing in a diary in Episode 2 was "So a Death Note of love? Buhhhh." I seem to recall someone else in this thread posting something similar.
