This is a static copy of In the Rose Garden, which existed as the center of the western Utena fandom for years. Enjoy. :)
I just had a silly thought.
What if Sanetoshi is a sort of "messed-up-by-Akio" version of Utena?
And he wants Himari to become the 'bride of destiny' or something like that, right?
my brain exploded from everything going on in the anime.

Officially my new favorite anime. So, so, so... we have to wait how long for the next season?
The next episode will be up this coming Thursday, so just 4 more days. (So close, yet so far...)
NOT FAST ENOUGH! (/chews nails)

It's okay... while we wait, let's see how many doujinshi and fanart had been made based on that previous episode.

I'm glad I'm not the only person who looked at him and thought 'Man-Utena'
Has anyone mentioned how both the Penguin Princess and Sanetoshi both referred to Kanba as a Scorpion? I assume this is going to have something to do with his shady dealings with the coat men but I'm wondering whether it's going to have any other significance. I keep thinking about the tale about the Scorpion and the Frog, and how its in it's nature to sting others. Has Kanba done something like this in the past or is he going to betray someone in the future?

I think calling him "the scorpion" has more to do with this little story here, from Night on the Galactic Railroad: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZXAsh4z2RuU. It seems that when they call him a scorpion, they're referring to his self-sacrifice for Himari.
But I wouldn't be surprised if calling him a scorpion turns out to have more than one meaning.

Yes that certainly makes a lot more sense, and also ties in with Ikuhara's love of classic anime references... thanks for the fabulous max background info!

Ok, since Night on the Galactic Railroad came up, (even though I know next to nothing about it...)
Does anyone remember this conversation in the first episode, between two unnamed children?

Boy1: Like I said, the apple is the universe itself!
Boy1: A universe in the palm of your hand.
Boy1: It's what connects this world and the other world.
Boy2: "The other world?"
Boy1: The world Campanella and other passengers are heading to!
Boy2: What does that have anything to do with an apple?
Boy1: The apple is also a reward for those who have chosen love over everything else!
Boy2: But everything's over when you're dead.
Boy1: It's not over!
Boy1: What I'm trying to say is that's actually where everything begins!
Boy2: I'm not following you, at all.
Boy1: I'm talking about love!
Boy1: Why don't you get it?

So, I just noticed that in episode 7, during Ringo's fantasy about Yuri and the bigwig, the aforementioned bigwig calls her "Tokikago-kun" Is this some honorifics weirdness I'm not familiar with, or evidence for the Yuri is a man/hermaphrodite theory?

Super bummed that the subs are going to be late for this episode. Does any other group sub this show?
Offline
A quick google search suggests a group called Nutbladder has done at least some of the episodes but I cannot vouch for their quality.
And Ragnarok: I do vaguely remember the two kids at the aquarium with the apple speech, are there any more Galactic Railroad references?
Offline
They actually walk by the house before the trip to the aquarium.
There could be tons of references, of which I'd catch none; I only knew this to be a reference because it uses a character's name.

New opening animation has come out. It's totally fabulous max! From the previews I've seen I guess we learn about Yuri and Momoka's past together. Some things look... very disturbing.

I can't believe I'm feeling sorry for Yuri after this newest episode.
It also looks like Momoka is all but confirmed to be an expy of Utena. Appearance-wise.

Kun can apparently also be for close friends of either gender, although I'm unsure of the specific implications. Touga calls Utena 'Tenjou-kun', so...

My understanding is that -kun is a suffix you're likely to use for a friend or a social inferior, particularly but not exclusively when they're male. Touga's "Tenjou-kun" is completely predictable; he's not going to address her as an equal with -san, but tomboyish Utena is certainly no -chan! If anything, "Tokikago-kun" makes even more sense, as the bigwig outranks Tokikago; -kun is always an acceptable suffix for your subordinate.

penguin withdrawal & I'm sick, too. noooo. ._.
this must be how Anthy feels.

Just watched the 15th episode, and I absolutely love this one. Ikuhara does not disappoint!
Granted, it was a raw episode, but I think I got the gist of what's going on...
Yuri does not seem to directly say anything along the line of her being a hermaphrodite, but constantly calling herself "ugly" (minikui). The flashback also titled it as "The Ugly Duckling".
I have a feeling it was implied that she's hermaphrodite, though.......
There's also the scene of Momoka and Yuri chatting while there were swans, definitely a reference to Yuri's transformation from ugly duckling to a swan. In the real world... a transformation that dramatic can presumably be done. Not by magic, but by surgery. Which is why there're so many chisels... and the next day Yuri would come to school with more bandages.
Yuri's determination to protect Momoka's diary is downright wonderful. She already has it all planned out to have thought of coming up with a decoy for Natsume to take, while the real copy is in the locker.
The last part with the ED song... It's so touching It also makes me wonder what sort of power Momoka's diary ACTUALLY holds. Whatever Momoka did, the statue of David got turned into Tokyo Tower. Did she really physically change the statue to a tower by changing fate? Or was the statue a mirage, and Momoka broke that mirage in exchange for her body?
Sanetoshi also seems to be very good to Himari... Maybe she IS Momoka's reincarnation after all? And Sanetoshi her destined groom?
That was a tl;dr rant about episode 15 on my part... But that episode... even though it was largely a flashback... it brings out so many feelings. For me anyway.

Saw the sub! SQUUEE!! *ahem* It was good and now many important things are brought to light. Also, for a second, I didn't think that
Shoma would get to Ringo before Yuri took her, the suspense almost killed me. I just wanted to yell, hurry it up!
Worth the wait.

I don't know where to start with this episode! At least Ringo's burning sequence in the OPs finally makes a bit more sense.

Sweet mother of God. I just jumped around to check the video quality and saw nothing but disturbing things.
Never change, Ikuhara.

Yuri's dad reminded me of the Raven talking to Rue from Princess Tutu. Seems like those two would get along well.
Glad that we finally got the chance to see Momoka! She was cute. Maybe Momoka fate-altered that rabbit into becoming Sanetoshi.
My favorite part of the episode was the scene with Kanba and Sanetoshi. I like how Kanba was grateful about what he did for Himari, though I doubt Sanetoshi has either of their best interests in mind. Kanba's relationship with Himari is my favorite part of the series.
These last few episodes have made me feel like I'm watching an entirely different show than what I started out with. It's not that I'm not enjoying it, because I am, but I sort of just wish it had stuck with the Takakura's as the main characters and focused on the penguin hat. But I'm interested to see where it's going.

My God. Things are starting to cohere. Love the Momoka paper-angel after the ED.
Yuri's childhood was genuinely terrifying, though. I now have to wonder if I can in good conscience show this episode to the traumatized and easily triggered.
Offline
And then Penguindrum became Princess Tutu!
I love that insert song we got at the end, over the sequence of Yuri and Momoka as kids, and when Momoka explains the lengths she was willing to go to in order to save Yuri from her fate.
Yuri's Project M is all but stated to be Project Momoka.
In regards to the insert that divides the episode into two, I can't wait to see what's waiting for us around the bend!
