This is a static copy of In the Rose Garden, which existed as the center of the western Utena fandom for years. Enjoy. :)
Guess we all know where this scene belongs in the anime~ Yes, it's the real original production cel, and along with another sketch drawing, they were put on auction on yahoo Japan. Guess how much they sold for at the end: 244,000 Yen!!!! That's 3,006.12 USD!!! Of course, money isn't the point here, to any true Utena fan they are simply priceless~ And isn't it great to see their kissing scene so out in the open finally after all these years?

Oh man, is Yasha going to be pissed. She's been working on vectoring that for ages.

I can't stop looking at this. Also, wow, 3000 bucks? TBH, some of us can really use that money right about now.
EDIT: This is officially my desktop now

What's with the top of the first one? o.o Utena seems to be missing some head mass (and not just figuratively).

Oh, you're right! And, missing some part of neck, too!

Wow, that's the most amazing cell I've ever seen on sale.

That's not surprising. I think it's pretty usual for them to color the cells all the way to the edge, like with Utena's hair, but they certainly didn't bother making it detailed. There's no point, because that outside edge isn't used for the actual animation.
In fact, I'm surprised they put so much effort into the area on the left that's covered in the final version! Perhaps it was just so their positions in the part we can see would look accurate. Or more likely, they originally intended to use more of the shot.

Well, I hope Yasha finish the one she is vectoring. It must be frustrating for her not to finish after so long.
And I would like to see the one she is vectoring I bet hers has better resolution.
PS. Wow, Utena is all over Anthy.

I still want an uncut dipkiss... :C
I don't know if it even exists or if the scene was just meant to be painfully implied but I'll keep on hoping.
This cell is absolutely amazing though. If only I had 3K in loose money.

But isn't that on purpose?
I mean, Tenjou means heaven-above afterall. Don't you get it? The rose is symbolically kissing the sky. That's why Utena seems to be blending with the sky!
But of course im overanalyzing here and also bullshitting, so it really is just a screw up.

It isn't a screwup at all, though, seriously - it's just a standard animation cell. They always color/draw a little more than is actually used, presumably just to be on the safe side.
Speaking of which, maybe it's my imagination, but on the Utena cell, I think I can see a faint white rectangle framing the area that's actually going to get used. Does anyone else see it?

I see the rectangle Dallbun, that was way more than they used I guess their first intention really wasn't ambiguity

Does anyone know who the current owner of this cel is? I missed this auction and I am willing to offer $5,000 US for that fabulous work of art!

Just ran across this blog post, where someone grabbed a screenshot of the final auction page. (Maybe that was on the page Itsuke linked to too, but I can't follow that link now for some reason.) It doesn't seem to say who the winner was, though...
