But they're protecting marriage!
</depressed sarcasm>
I've never been quite sure what they're protecting marriage from. I mean, they keep saying they're protecting it from the gays, but I'm not sure what, exactly, they think we'll do to marriage. I mean, I like calling my wife "wife" just because I can, and there's the whole medical insurance thing, and inheritance, and... I can't see anything that my marriage is doing to anyone else's marriage. Except, perhaps, showing up the shattering het marriages around us...

Rawr family values rawr holy union between man and wife rawr, and so forth. Frankly, there's nothing gay people can do to cheapen the value of marriage and desecrate the holiness of the bond or whatever that straight people haven't already thoroughly covered. At this point, I see no reason to deny gays marriage based on some ideal of its value that no one upholds anyway. The relationship thing is fine and dandy, but the legal advantages are at this point less perks for the married than screwing the rest of us totally over. A whole population of people shouldn't be cut off from access to ruthlessly manipulating the system simply on account of their gender preference, it's ridiculous.

I think they're protecting it from making them look bad, because the average straight marriage lasts something like seven years while the average super-committed gay "we would get married if they'd let us" relationship lasts closer to fifteen.
