This is a static copy of In the Rose Garden, which existed as the center of the western Utena fandom for years. Enjoy. :)
I fig'd I'd start a thread for the sports freaks and the closet sports freaks (like myself.)
My fave team just won tonight, the Boston Red Sox. World Series 04 & 07 Champs baby!

Well, I wish it had been a more competitive series. We haven't had one since 2003, but perhaps we were spoiled by the 7-game series of 2001 and 2002. But the last 4 have been so annoyingly lopsided; the winners have gone 16-1. The Red Sox won 5 World Series in the first 18 years of last century. They seem to beginning this century in the same manner. At least we'll all be dead if this century ends in the same manner as last.

IT'S LIKE UTENA DUELS. WITH BALLS.
think like the utena movie, it's televised, and everybody watches it, loves it, gets absorbed into it, the drama.
quite fun.

I think sports are retarded...just thought id send that out there. I have no respect for baseball tards who yell and scream and riot if their team loses...

I was sad that the Diamond Backs got knocked out. I didn't care about the WS after that.
Also, Steven Drew is a hot hot hottie.

Neither do I. I hope you don't think that all baseball fans are like that.

I know they all aren't like that.
Just a majority! (this is sarcastic)

That's sort of insulting. You realize that's the equivalent of me saying, "I think anime is retarded. I have no respect for the male anime tards who don't wash themselves and just watch it for the drawn depictions of little girls having sex and the female anime tards who pretend like they know Japanese and think they're better than everyone else."
You're using a stereotype of a few to color your perception of the majority.

Stereotypes rule.

We need a sarcasm font. sometimes i forget that sarcasm and the nets don't mix and can make people angry.
I need to be less sarcastic. XD *gets rocks thown at her* but i heard (from SLoT) that somewhere in the southwest there is rioting at the loss world series loss.

It's ok, I'm sarcastic a lot, but I try to remember only to do it to people who know me. And even they sometimes get confused.
And there will always be idiots who follow a multibillion dollar entertainment product. I have no defense for them. It's usually a mixture of alcohol and sports that's the problem. From all accounts though, riots here are nothing compared to soccer riots in the rest of the world. It's even worse when people are rioting because they are happy at a winning team.

now THAT is STUPID!

Yeah... they're even worse than a lot of American football fans. It's scary, really.

I think it is always important to keep the right view point in situations like this. In this case the best viewpoint for me is this one.

I've got a theory that the less violent the sport is, the worse the fans can get. I mean, when was the last boxing-inspired riot, yeah? For every hockey or rugby riot there seems to be a half-dozen "our team won lets riot" events from the basketball or baseball crowds. Or, maybe it's selective attention on my part.
And, really, the bad fans, the overdoing it fans, there's no connection between the object of their obsessive antisocial behaviour and the behaviour itself. It's just a vehicle or excuse for the stupid manic fannishness of destruction.
That said, this year, the whole baseball season just didn't do it for me. Probably because I was cheering for the Dodgers and they did do their best, but sometimes, even doing their best, they still managed to win a game here and there. Or something like that.

I don't keep up with sports (or even *like* sports), but since I grew up in Boston, I admit that a small part of me is happy that my "home team" won.
On the other hand, the rest of me thinks that people who have a job that involves the word "play" should do it for fun and not for gazillions of dollars a year.

I like this theory. Perhaps it explains why Monica Seles was stabbed so many years ago...
I'm a sports fan, but alas, I'm not one for MLB. Now, you give me the College World Series, Little League World Series, College Softball World Series (FAVORITE!), and the Little League Softball World Series, and I'm all over it. But MLB...it's just so tedious after awhile. I tried watching a few games of the WS, and when I realized I'd been watching for 45 minutes and they had only just gotten to the bottom of the first, I turned it off. They should set up stricter time limits and stuff for the pitcher and batter. Just when you think, "Hey! He's finally going to pitch the ball!" the damn batter steps out of the box and the whole set of rituals start again...
But it's certainly not a dislike of baseball itself--it's just how slow MLB (and to a pretty similar extent, minor league) games are.

I'm glad that the Red Sox won, since around here, Baseball seems like some sort of cult. We have to translate sentences like, "The Red Sox always win," in Spanish, being a Yankees fan is disgraceful, and if you don't stay up until one in the morning to watch the entire game, you're not a real fan.
I watched a little bit of the game on Saturday, but I think that watching Baseball would eventually drive me insane. To me, all it is is watching a bunch of men chew gum with their mouth open, spit, touch themselves, and shake their ass whenever they pitch the ball. Watching all of this over, and over, would eventually make me go crazy.

Anyway, I don't watch sports, really.
So, uh, GO SOX! (You should always cheer for the winning team.)

Baseball always makes me think of that one student council meeting where a game of baseball was going on around them. (Yay for symbolism.) It also makes me think of that baseball that hit Nanami in the face.
Utena looks really cute in her baseball uniform. Why can't all baseball teams dress like that.
