You forgot to add the part where they are afraid of boys and remain virgins forever because sex with men is bad and ruins your purity.

Oh and they must rely on some boring bastard and behave like socially stunted 9 year olds. Maturity and independence is so unsexy.

Re: Mawaru Penguindrum: Or, YOU WILL BE SPOILED

Watching episode 16... all I can say is... [Poor Natsume... she's like Nanami, only devoid of any passion or excitement except for the thrill of killing her grandfather so she can be with her dad again. And, in the end, were it not for Mario, she pretty much turned into very person she hated in the first place. Someone who discards "useless" things that get in the way of her own success.

In other note, Sahei is um... interesting. I can't help but think of Nero when I see him.

Also, Crystal Princess, you perv.

And, that dress the maid was wearing... that was also what Anthy wore to the dance, was it not?

What was up with the newest ED? I got some mood whiplash listening to it. And why does this show keep accumulating more and more EDs? I can't keep track of all of them. emot-gonk

Spoiler [ The Crystal Princess is back! After so many episodes without her transformation sequence, it was so nice to hear Rock Over Japan again. She's still a bit bitchy, but it definitely seems like she's looking after Himari. Also I'm assuming the maid will come back again and become more important in the future because we saw her face and know her name. ]

Masako, or at least kid!Masako, was pretty much Nanami.

I have a feeling that she [may have a skewed image of her father... there's a possibility that her father isn't really worth all that trouble to kill Sahei in the first place]

In other note, just came across this song by Shiina Ringo, and... god, both the video and lyrics remind me of Ringo (and a bit of Momoka, maybe) so so much: Koufukuron

Lyric translation here: http://www.jpopasia.com/lyrics/11544/ri … kuron.html

The song is about searching for happiness and to protect it. And lastly... so much ringo...

It seems to me like all the weird crap Ikuhara had male characters doing in SKU he's revisiting with a female set and the explicitness turned up a lot.

Almost had a cow at the Survival Strategy initiation.

Re: Mawaru Penguindrum: Or, YOU WILL BE SPOILED

Well, the show IS being aired at 2 in the morning, I believe :|a
Actually, if you look at the past major anime works that Ikuhara has done, all of them are pretty much wacked in the head as ever.

But it gets more and more out there as he goes up in the audience age group, methinks.

"Goldfish Warning": For kids, super kawaii and adorable and touching and wacked in the head
"Sailor Moon": Teenagers, a little bit more mature with the violence and character death and homosexual subtext, thinking of more grown-up stuff like characters who talk about their future and their ambitions, still kinda wacked in the head, but not so much than the fact that it plenty of hilarious scenes.
"Revolutionary Girl Utena": Teenagers, but definitely a lot deeper and more mature, you start to have implied sex scenes (well... actually...), wacked in the head, really really wacked with curries and eggs and massive symbolism.
"Mawaru Penguindrum": ... a bit more grown up? You start to have adults as major characters rather than supporting characters. People who are not students are taking on more prominent roles. You start to have a better look into some of the more "adult" themes being played in that does not have to do with what you do at school... at all, actually. Utena is still revolving around the "school" setting, but Penguindrum, even though all 4 teenagers go to school, the story certainly doesn't revolve around what happens on campus anymore.

I think Ikuhara is "growing up"... and I think I'm, technically, growing up with him. emot-confused

Oh my god, thanks Gios!

It's absolutely amazing that they even took the trouble to read what's written in the fate diary.

So, technically, Momoka, Tabuki, and Yuri were supposed to be together, looking at the lizard bursting into fire, eh?

It's interesting how Momoka doesn't put honorifics behind Yuri's name, hmmmmmm <_<

I think this may have propelled 16's Survival Stratedgy to the Best in the series.

This episode definetly was a lot lighter tha previous episodes, although I was confused about the chronology, was the whole bit with Masako eating the blowfish/posessed brother happening in the present or in the past?

Also it appears that, as people suspected, Ringo is now switching tracks, and hopefully things will work out alright hopefully maybe. I swear though, Ikuhara has managed to confound my expectations of all the female characters bar Himari (who continues to be cutesy and disturbingly mature despite her crapsack childhood)

There are some new novel spoilers out. I'll post them here if anyone is interested. I don't know how you all feel about spoilers from the novel - the new one covers the next two episodes which aren't out yet. I will say that if the anime goes the way of the novel, the next two episodes are going to be pretty exciting. emot-biggrin

Re: Mawaru Penguindrum: Or, YOU WILL BE SPOILED

All right then, here you go. emot-biggrin  They're pretty big spoilers, so read at your own risk!  These are copied and pasted from Good Haro, the person who translates the books:

Spoilers:

• Apparently the medicine Sanetoshi's giving Himari has to be readministered within a certain time period or it puts the patient's life in danger?
When Tabuki kidnapped Himari, there was a sense or urgency about whether she'd get her evening dose in time.
• When Tabuki has Himari hostage, he calls out Kanba and seems to be pressing him for details regarding Kenzan's whereabouts.
Even though Tabuki threatens to drop Himari from the gondola{I'm gonna guess there's ferris wheel shenanigans involved here} as he interrogates Kanba, Kanba genuinely doesn't seem to know where his father is.
• The weapon Masako uses is described as a "repurposed gattling gun"
Is she upgrading to that smaller gun she had in the first opening? Or is she going to keep using the sling shot in the anime?
• The birds in the first opening with Tabuki are probably gifts his mother gave him because, "human friends will only interfere with your piano."
Even in the Child Broiler he had a bird cage, and when he was in peril of grave bodily harm, the only thing he could think of was letting at least the birds escape, but the cage was rusted shut and would not open. Tabuki nearly plunged into the flames at the end of the conveyer belt to soften the metal with the heat and open the cage before jumping off.
• Then from out of nowhere, Tabuki's classmate Momoka appears in the Child Broiler with him and suggests that they escape.
She desperately tries to hold onto Tabuki's hand after he fell into the fire from the conveyer belt.
Even after "adults" in work clothes burned Momoka's hand, she didn't let go and when Tabuki suddenly came to, they had escaped.

Someone started asking about whether this means the Child Broiler is a concrete/real place and someone else responded with some information compiled from people who got the book yesterday. From what I understand the quotes are quotes from the book:

"When I came to and opened my eyes, I was sitting here, but I have no recollection of how I got here." That sort of thing. It's not really clear whether it's a dream world or a near-death experience related to suicide? or something.

Tabuki wakes up in the Child Broiler sitting on the floor, clutching his knees––> Momoka appears "We should go home!"
-->"But I have home to go back to. I'm worthless because I can't play piano." they argue for a while
-->Some adults appear in jumpsuits, "Alright everyone, we're going to turn you all into transparent* beings now!" {* Seito Sakakibara reference most likely}
"It's nothing to be scared of, you're just going to never amount to anything!"
-->The floor starts to move like a conveyer belt. At the edge is a sharp drop and the children fall into the fire one by one.
-->Momoka grabs Tabuki's hand to prevent him from falling --> the adults burn Momoka's hand to try to make her let go
-->[Tabuki?] thinks he/they are falling but the next minute he wakes up and opens his eyes to see the blue sky above him and the Child Broiler building off in the distance

Later, the reason Momoka falls in love with Tabuki:
While [Tabuki] practices frantically in the music room even though he thinks his little brother is much better than him,
[Momoka says] "I could see the music glistening as it spilled out of the classroom window and into the hall and the garden. It was incredibly beautiful."
"It doesn't matter if your hand can't play anymore, because what I heard was your heart."
Or something like that.

[Himari] when she's kidnapped by Tabuki [thinks/says]:
"The Takakura family has no choice but to be embraced by hatred and anger."
"I always felt that someday, we'd be punished like this."
"And if that's our inevitable fate, please find a way to punish me instead of Kanba and Shoma."
"Oh god, please just end it all already."

A related chunk:
It was so sad when Himari prayed to god, "To spare Kan and Sho from punishment, I will shoulder it all myself."
And then she says, "My life has been long enough. I had a happy life. So I want Kanba to live his own life." as she tries to jump {to kill herself}, and even though Kanba is wrecking both his body and soul, he shouts, "But I /want/ to live for your sake!"

Re: Mawaru Penguindrum: Or, YOU WILL BE SPOILED

Oh wow.... huh... [Those who say they don't have a grudge... probably hold the strongest... as is the case with Tabuki.

Everyone's been saying that he's potentially an antagonist given the way he was being presented in the OP, looking sinister. I was hoping that wasn't the case... but I guess he DOES have issues after all.

Also, this is interesting... so the child broiler event was probably something between Tabuki and Momoka after all... maybe Himari IS Momoka's reincarnation... otherwise I'm not sure how she has the memory of that child broiler when she obviously wasn't born yet.

I also think that maybe if Himari is Momoka's reincarnation, the reason why she's bearing the punishment, or at least she seems to, might have been that because she used to have the power to alter fate for other people as Momoka, so now, as Himari, she's being punished for derailing the world for "selfish" reasons of helping people close to her.
]

EDIT: Looking at the opening scene again (The second one), at the end, Kanba is running into a different direction from Shouma and Himari... why is that?

Anyone have any idea what Natsume meant when she said, you should all go get Genghis Conned or whatever the hell it was she yelled at her subordinates??

Re: Mawaru Penguindrum: Or, YOU WILL BE SPOILED

It's a word pun. Originally it says 'Get defeated by China.' But it's a double meaning in the Japanese, so the fansubbers went with a pun on Genghis Khan and 'conned' as a business thing.

Here's the entire latest chapter from the book.  Looks like it covers all of episode 17.  It's still a spoiler at this point, but after this week's episode it should be safe to read for those who don't want to be spoiled. Thanks to Good Haro for translating this!

[It sounds like Tabuki has been waiting for THIS moment ALL HIS LIFE!!! I wonder if Yuri Is behind this, too... What if the reason of their marriage is some sort of elaborate form of revenge? Yuri said that their marriage was bound by fate, after all.]

Spoilers I wouldn't be surprised if they married for that reason. To "combine forces." But Tabuki said Momoka wouldn't want them to take revenge, was he just saying that to throw Yuri off? He sure changed his mind fast.
