This is a static copy of In the Rose Garden, which existed as the center of the western Utena fandom for years. Enjoy. :)

Re: The names of the duels...

I always thought this are some how parallel with this : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roman_de_la_Rose.
Am I wrong?

No idea! I've never even heard of that poem before, but it would be awesome if there was a connection. You tell us - what role do the "duel title" words play in that poem? Is there a similar progression of some kind?

Re: The names of the duels...

M...mm.m.
It's hard to explain, especially, counting on the fact , that English is not my native language.

Also I might be wrong with this theory.
It is based mostly on my feelings, rather than on facts.

Anyway- I think modern English text of this classical medieval poem is somwhere present online (see the Wiki article), so anyone can try.

But also I'll try to be more specific from my side.
This poem is allegorical.
There are some simbolical acts and characters present there in a line.
If I remember properly -  Medieval French "names" for this acts (deeds) and charecters are corresponding with some duel "names" in Utena.
Progression of the line is not simmillar exactly - but I am remembering myself finding many associations ,when firstly watched Utena.

"alieation" is not a French word, but "aliénation" is.
Same with "jalousis" -> "jalousie".
And missing accents :
"dependance" -> "dépendance"
"amitie" -> "amitié"
"revolution" -> "révolution"

For instance I don't know what "limite" would be, other than maybe "limit"

Yes, "limite" = "limit".

Thanks! Of course, nobody ever claimed that Utena-related materials used good French. emot-wink

Re: The names of the duels...

I was looking for these today and after finding them was wondering about the pick for Wakaba's duel.

Looked up, best as I could, the meaning of the French limite, since sometimes basing meaning on direct translation can lose nuance.

In this case it doesn't seem to, but it used a phrase I thought very apt and very sad for Wakaba, "as far as something can go"

As in, Wakaba can only make it so far because she's not "special." She fights to go further, but she loses. It's as far as she can go.
