This is a static copy of In the Rose Garden, which existed as the center of the western Utena fandom for years. Enjoy. :)
In the Ruka episodes we see Juri standing on the tiled floor of the fencing gym. The black and white tiles seem to form the Morning Star quilt pattern. I am not a quilt expert so I am not completely sure of this, nor am I sure that the film makers know enough about American quilts to come up with such a subtle motif.
If I am right then I wonder what other subtle reference to the Morning and Evening Stars might be hiding in the Ohtori scenery.

I am completely unaware of quilt patterns, but that's an amazingly subtle detail.

A quick googling confirmed. They're not exact, but the pattern isn't always the same, it's more a basic look that certainly is showing up in the flooring.
My god what an egomaniac that man is.

His own personal motif endlessly repeated everywhere in his school, Lucifer references even in his tiling, a car that is made entirely of sex, the title of End of the World, and a domicile that is basically one enormous statement about the size of his cock. Not to mention that he takes pictures of himself having sex. This man perfected narcissism and made it marketable.

In the episode where Utena first moves into her new room after the first duel. There is a star-shaped chandelier in the lobby.

the magic lies in the fact that he made it look so good

I did not want to start a whole new thread just to ask this, but take note of various scenes in the fencing room, when the fencers are wearing their standard masks and armor. On the back of their masks they have the pink Ohtori signet. It took me a while to realize that it was the Ohtori signet and not the Japanese Rising Sun.
Did anyone else notice that similarity? I wonder if Be-Papas are saying that all of Japan is a bit like Ohtori? Does that seem likely?

Just for the record here is the Morning Star pattern again.

That's some serious awful right there. I wonder how many other references to 'morning star' there are?

Probably enough to make my head explode. Every time I turn around there's something else that makes this series even more brilliant.

Just when you've think you won the rat race, along come faster rats. :p
Really, this series is amazing.

I DID NOT realize that! Just like I was oblivious to the morning star pattern.
And, yes! I do think Be-Papas is saying that Japan is a bit like Ohtori. I remember somewhere in this website, there's an analytical essay about how Utena may be depicting the battle of feminism, and Japan back in the 90's was still pretty traditional with the whole regard about male's dominance. And, I think Ikuhara-sensei also said something about the repression of Japanese women when he was directing Utena.
