This is a static copy of In the Rose Garden, which existed as the center of the western Utena fandom for years. Enjoy. :)

Awesome. When I opened the topic, I was expecting a text-adventure-style fanfic like John Biles writes, but this is even better.
I just beat the game - very entertaining! I got pretty fond of the protagonist and her... single-mindedness.
Wow, you're very fast! You must have some previous genre experience Congratulations! And thanks for the feedback; it sounds like there were a couple places where I could have made it clearer that something didn't matter, and I have no excuse for what you tried with Akio not working!

Yeah, but she keepin it on the down low. Only reason she tells D-Ko is to troll her.
Satyr, this is fucking sweet, and I hope to god it doesn't make me fail out of grad school this fall. If I get Juri end it might still be worth it.
EDIT: How is violence not the answer to a locked door? .... goddamn, I am such a fuckin' tabletop gamer.

Kozue took part in the only lesbian kiss in the series. The correct pick-up line would have been, "Your brother is in love with me." Edit: Or some other more delightful pickup line.
It took me a half hour, but I figured out the where the gloves were! I just had to think of all the characters who have worn gloves, and recalling a particular character who was shown putting on gloves made me realize where they were. I can't believe I didn't think of it sooner. Now I can finally progress in the game.

Haha, and I don't remember it at all! Canon will come bite me in the ass every time. When does Kozue kiss a girl in the series? The game is set somewhere around Episode 6, so maybe it's the events in the game that cause the kiss in the series? But I'm pretty sure your pickup line would work!
I'm so happy people are enjoying themselves and getting pretty far in the game! I didn't have the patience for a long beta phase -- my brother was my only playtester (apart from myself, many many times, of course) -- so I don't really know which puzzles are too easy or too hard. So you guys are posting about solving puzzles and winning the game and I'm like "awesome, that means it's working!"

Kozue kisses Anthy when she was serving as Miki's rose bride-- no doubt an idea she got from the book!
How to I send "someone cute" to Kozue? And is there some way to actually get Akio to go upstairs? The shadow girls are on a coffee break, so I can't look to them for their infinite wisdom.

Where the flying fuck is the key? The shadow girls are AWOL, Anthy's got her trollface on, I got the damn gloves, and I've searched the whole campus. This is madness.
EDIT: Thanks for the hint, Raz. Thought I'd searched all around her, but I missed a spot.

Anthy was the one who lost it (threw it?), so you might want to search somewhere near her.
Edit: I retract my question about Akio going upstairs, since after looking more closely, I found the use of going up there.

Gloves gloves.... I'm going to look the entire gallery to remember.

Hey, Epi? Hint? Pretend you're an RPG character and fuckin' loot everything. I picked em up and I haven't needed em yet.

Uh... I left with camera, and Akio asked to take my picture. So he took it. But when I tried to leave with the camera after the picture taking, he asked to take my picture again. I tried to leave again after that, but he said the exact same thing, and took my picture again. And again. And again. It doesn't seem possible to leave with the camera WITHOUT him taking my picture.
I want to know what happens next! Why won't Akio let me?! This can't be part of the game, can it?

Sounds like a bug/oversight. Have you (spoiler)picked up the photos left in the planetarium afterwards?(spoiler) Maybe that's the trigger that turns off the Akio event.

I hadn't tried that, but after many failed attempts, I discovered that I could break the chain of being Akio's camera-slave by typing "go out" instead of "out" as I usually do. Not sure why that is, but I'm happy to have found a way out!

I SCORED WITH JURI.

Ah, of course! How could I forget?
How to I send "someone cute" to Kozue?
Forget about Kozue. The game is about Juri, after all! Maybe a wise older man could help explain how to make Juri notice you. And maybe, in the process of making Juri notice you, you'll have a good reason to send someone cute to Kozue after all!

She's such a bitch, isn't she? Fortunately, it's not her gloves you need. The gloves are turning out to be a surprisingly difficult puzzle, aren't they? I'm glad you found them! For others still struggling, their container is in plain sight somewhere on campus, but you might not have noticed it because you were too busy ogling someone.
Razara wrote:

This is definitely a bug. I've never seen it before! I'm glad you found a solution, but I apologize for making you go through the special Akio photography sequence time after time. If I make a 2.0 version, I'll figure out what's going on and fix it! That's the second bug involving Akio, which makes me think he has some kind of fetish for making people uncomfortable or something, but that's crazy talk.

Congratulations! As for Nemuro Memorial Hall, it's well and truly closed, but it seems like a nice place to have a sequel!

MANKO LOVE YOU LONG TIME. I actually had no problem with the gloves, but that was purely luck; my dramas came from two other objects, one of which took me ages to click to (THANKS SPG) and the other just didn't work the first time. So I went and tried to hit on Saionji for kicks, and then it worked. Odd, as I'm sure he hadn't told me anything I hadn't already heard. Oh, well, it distracted Saionji from his girl-porn imaginations for a while, so there's always that.

Ha ha, yeah, she does that! There are situations where it's really easy to write jokes. One of them is when you know there's going to be a piano in the game, and of course the player is going to try to PLAY PIANO, and you can either be annoying and say no ("The piano was never your forte"), or you can play along and think of some songs that would be funny to play at Ohtori.
Of course, then you have to deal with things like "Wait, do you need a piano bench to play the piano? What if Kozue's there? What if Kozue isn't there?..."
Clarice, I wonder what the object was that didn't work the first time!

Aghaga. I feel like I'm spamming this thread. I didn't have troubles with the bench etc etc etc, but I got stuck with the indian food hint. I just. Don't get it at all.

The Indian food hint is especially oblique, I'll admit. The message is that if you want to know what a person likes, you should ask their friends! You're closing in on the endgame -- good luck!
Also, never ever worry about spamming/asking for help. I'm awful at text adventures If there's no walkthrough I usually give up halfway through. And the one time I emailed the author to ask what I was supposed to be doing, she couldn't remember! That's why this thread is here.

That's basically what certain red head said. Ahh, I'll keep trying, at least I know for sure that I don't have to break into the cafeteria for indian food again.
Just one question: can we ask things to random students or not?
Can't I just fuck Touga instead? He seems a lot more easier.
EDIT: Oh, nevermind, I figured that out. So, that Tanizaki book was not the answer, after all . Thank you!

I don't want to read any of the comments, for spoilers sake, but I read the opening post.........
1. Thank you, Satyreyes!!! I cannot wait to play this game!!!!!!
2. For such a big, exciting project, I am REALLY GLAD I stumbled upon this post. Any possibility of making this a sticky? ...or at least an announcement at the top of the IRG opening page - cause I would have played this the second I got home, had I known. I'd hate for anybody else to miss out on the fun for even one minute longer than they have to. ;D

Nope! It takes a long time to write a character's dialogue (though it's lots and lots of fun!), so I only spent time on the main characters. Most of them have answers for twenty to twenty-five questions, and writing the answers is tough; you have to make them more or less in character, while relaying the important information, and not leading players down too many false paths. The Tanizaki book, for example, was a false path I probably should have omitted, since it has nothing to do with the plot -- an even greater sin because there's a library in the game where a player might reasonably try to look for it! An example of doing this right -- or more right, anyway -- is that many of the characters will mention the planetarium when you ask about Akio, because the planetarium is important to the game, but no one will mention his car, because the car isn't important. (He still has an answer if you happen to ask him about it, though!)
Glad you figured out your enigma

I thought about it, but it seemed kind of egotistical to plug my own work in the announcement when I usually don't plug other people's work that way. But, now that I look at recent SKU posts, I see that there are at least two other major works that deserve to be announced! I'll plug all of them
