This is a static copy of In the Rose Garden, which existed as the center of the western Utena fandom for years. Enjoy. :)

Re: I don't understand..

Now that I think about it I do see a lot of Utena/Anthy fangirling but generally only as a pair. They as a couple draw yuri/shoujo-ai fans into the show I think.

Close, close, but you fell down on two major things. One,you didn't use the word 'like' enough, and two, you used too much punctuation. You remembered to capitalise your 'I's and opened and closed sentences. Otherwise, quite good. emot-biggrin

Oh, I knew it! emot-gonk I curse my obsession for proper pronunciation! I never quite hit the mark with those things. Still, the heart and soul were there. I myself almost believed I was a fangirl for a moment.

Re: I don't understand..

I'm straight and didn't really crush on any of the dudes either. Mostly because I dig muscles and don't really dig long hair. Or mutant forelocks.

I'm not straight, but I feel this way too. I'm not into bishies, just tough, buffed up, manly guys with square chins.

and dark skinned girls   (Anthy etc-love )

If we define 'fangirling' as 'the irrational childish adoration of a character best summarized with :3 and WIBBLE', then the only character who is a target of fangirling on the forum is Saionji. He, I think, appeals to a sense of nurturing where a sufficient number of hugs and cookies will melt away the backhands and reveal an adorable bristly guy with sharp objects and a bit of a domination thing.

Amen, sister.  I want to nurse Saionji as if he was a wounded bird because I don’t like the way Touga toys with him.  When I saw how he masked the sadness of his lost friendship with rage I wanted to hold him in my arms.

I am ashamed to admit that sometimes I am one of those fangirls who wants to blame everything on Anthy. I want to say she is a cruel, manipulative, perverted, and selfish girl who has led this poor young man on just because she can’t grow a spine and leave her brother. I want to say she had everything coming because she just wanted Dios to herself.

However, the truth is that Anthy’s motives were probably mixed when she sealed Dios away. I mean, the poor guy was dying. She messed up, but that doesn’t mean she deserves to suffer forever or be abused by Saionji. The punishment doesn’t fit the crime.

I guess I’m saying I can’t help it. Why does Juri love Shiori even when she toys with her? Why does Shiori love Ruka after he plays her like a fiddle? Why does Wakaba love Saionji even after he pinned her note to the bulletin board?  A crush is uncontrollable.

One idea that might be relevant is the way SKU conflates sex with "adulthood," and "adulthood" with corruption.  There are a few male characters who are not obviously jerkwads -- Mitsuru, Miki, perhaps Tatsuya -- but they're not sexy bishies!

I think Tatsuya’s a bishie. He'd have stolen my heart in a nanosecond if he were ten years older. Have you ever looked up the word adorkable? That should have Tatsuya’s picture next to it on the TV Tropes page.

Re: I don't understand..

@ Randamonian

Your obsessive fangirl post was pretty funny. I think that people in this forum are pretty cool and can have mature discussions about the characters without doing stuff like that. In fact, I rarely see anything similar to what you wrote regarding SKU outside of this forum. That being said, I have seen some fangirling outside the forum that is completely crazy. For example, I hate it when people completely ignore any of Ruka's flaws and treat him as a perfect prince that saved Juri from mean evil Shiori. He is not perfect and a lot of the stuff he does to "help" Juri, like groping and kissing her against her will is pretty creepy. Shiori does have her flaws too, but I don't think I've ever come across a case where a fangirl/boy totally ignored her flaws and went on about how great she was, like what often happens with Ruka, Saionji, and Touga. I think most people who like or at least appreciate Shiori (as in they don't view her as the worst person in the world) acknowledge and accept her flaws, but realize there's reasons for her behavior, like her serious self-esteem issues. A lot of people who like Ruka will say how awesome he is because he helped Juri end some of her self-destructive behaviors, but won't acknowledge that the way he went about it was creepy.

With SKU, I think that my favorite male characters are Miki, Mikage and maybe Tsuwabuki. Miki's usually pretty nice and I felt really bad for Mikage at the end of the Black Rose arc. He's a very interesting and sympathetic villain.

I looked at the TV Tropes article called "misaimed fandom" and they had a paragraph about Utena that I think makes a lot of sense:

"Revolutionary Girl Utena has this in a bunch of different flavors, which was sort of bound to happen. A big part of this is either focused on whether Anthy is a Complete Monster or The Woobie, whether Utena should be a prince or a princess, and shipping wars. Oh, the shipping wars...The ironic part is that the show makes a large part of deconstructing these arguments and pointing out that no person would have such flat motivations. But it wouldn't be a Misaimed Fandom if they listened."

Re: I don't understand..

CausalityStar, the only way I could get away with that post is here because the meaning wouldn't be confused.

I see alot of that on the Hetalia fan base. I love that fanbase for the translating and stuff, but I get scared sometimes.

emot-confused Is this implying that Utena fans in general don't actually "listen" to the series' message, and/or that the fangirls don't? (Forgive me if I've misinterpreted this passage =_=; )

You don't need to understand Revolutionary Girl Utena to understand it.

Well, I don't think it's intended to imply that all or even most fans don't listen to the series' message but that there are fans who don't get the message. This quote is from an article called "Misaimed Fandom" which is about people who misinterpret anything from literature, to movies to anime. So I guess it's really about the more obvious stupidity that occurs in general in a fandom.

Some other examples on this page include people who think that the book "1984" by George Orwell was intended to be anti-socialist, despite the fact that Orwell himself was a socialist. Harry Potter is mentioned because of the Draco In Leather Pants phenomenon, which you can read more about here: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/M … atherPants

Another good example is that Anzu from Yu-Gi-Oh! often gets bashed for making friendship speeches. This is in spite of the fact that many male characters, including Yami Yugi make more speeches than her (and never he gets crap for it, even though a lot of those speeches are about friendship). Plus, Yu-Gi-Oh! was originally all about the importance of friendship and you still see hints of that even after card games became Serious Business and the driving force behind the plot.

Anyway I hope that cleared things up a little. I think the point of that passage was to show that with any fandom, there are fangirls (and plenty of fanboys too; I hate it when people assume or imply that only women say or do stupid things when it comes to their fandom) who miss the point of whatever message their show/book/whatever is trying to convey.
