This is a static copy of In the Rose Garden, which existed as the center of the western Utena fandom for years. Enjoy. :)
I've been wanting to do this for a long time. What anime series that is out now(on TV or otherwise) do you think is the most overrated, and which is the most underrated.
example.
IMO
OVERRATED: Naruto (Without a Doubt!!)
UNDERRATED: The Prince of Tennis (probably because 1.it's recently new to TV) and 2. sports-related)
Offline
Overrated: Naruto
Underrated: Code Geass (It's also pretty new, so it'll take some time)
Hm, Blood+, in my opinion, falls in between the two. I don't really hate the story, but I felt the ending was a bit rushed and unrealistic.
And, Utena is still underrated in my state
Offline
Full Metal Alchemist I found to be rather overrated. Not that I didn't think it was actually an above-average show, but the enormous hype about it built it up to be really rather more than it was (to me).

Utena and FMA are actually my two most favourite animes. One is very popular, the other isn't as popular. (At least, not right now. It's a little old) But, while I adore FMA, I do agree somewhat. I personally think it is a very worthy show, but it does get large amounts of annoying fans who froth over it too much. Too many fangirls. But that's what you get with animes on Cartoon Network and Adult Swim.
Overrated animes/mangas for me would probably be Bleach.. I have quite a few friends who adore it, but I just couldn't get into it. Several of the characters were kick-ass, but other than that it didn't inspire me much and I found it a bit too predictable.
Underrated.. Definitely Utena. And Princess Tutu.

Utena unfornately is highly underated -.-
Overated... Tsubasa chronicle the manga isn't definately Clamp's best but the anime is just horrible

*shrugs* I rather like Naruto. It's one of the two anime series I'm trying to keep current. I suppose I'm just too far out of the mainstream to really know what's out there anymore. I pick up anime/manga usually because a friend either talks about it long enough I decide to give it a try or I see some art from it and get mesmerized by the pretties. Over my entire exposure to anime/manga, I tend to find any of the Gundam stuff (except 08th Team) to be very overrated. I suppose Trinity Blood is underrated, given a lot of people have base assumptions about anything with vampires in it.
Meh. I don't even know a quarter of the stuff available in the US. I remember when everyone wqas OMGDBZ! *rolls eyes* I watch anime/read managa for the art and character development.

Overrated: Naruto, InuYasha and Bleach. Both are insanely popular and not really good [except for InuYasha which is downright BAD]. The FMA anime. It was pretty good, but people calling it "the best anime ever"? Peh! Also, Gravitation. All fansluts love it. I hate fansluts. I hate Gravitation. And Prince of Tennis, which is insanely popular and INSANELY SHITTY. It's all about pretty boys being gay and playing boring, predictable and reptitive tennis games. Hate that show. So much.
Underrated: The Claymore manga and the Venus Versus Virus manga. They're both pure awesomeness and no one but me seems to be reading them, which is truly a shame.
I don't think Utena is underrated. I live in Israel [which is like... Israel], and most people in the anime community here who aren't 8 year old InuYasha fans know the series and love it. And hey - the series is almost 10 years old and it has its own extremely active forum with plenty of members.

Anything aired on American TV is overrated. Most of the fans that watch that are new to anime, not that there's anything wrong with that. Anything with pretty boys and lots of Yaoi pairings is overrated. This might just be due to my bitterness over the fact that I stopped caring about D.N.Angel the moment people started caring about it.
I can't help but feel slightly annoyed at how much merchandise there is of Naruto and Inu Yasha, when I can't find even a single wall scroll or poster from SKU. No one where I live has ever heard of SKU.

I actually rather enjoy Naruto... but only the subtitled version. I've rather gotten attached to the characters, although the animation can be down right horrible. Half the time they're talking and the mouths aren't even moving.
Under rated:
Death Note. It constantly gets dumped on as being made for little teeny boppers and taking itself too seriously, but it's actually a very intriguing show, my second favorite, right below Revolutionary Girl Utena.

I used to love Clamp a lot especially when CCS was around back then. The whole concept of Tsubasa and XXX-Holic feels like their way of merchandising their past projects. To me, those two anime/manga is just full of fan service.

Yeah, and the anime isn't even true to the manga, and I think it's being made to be more kid-approprite.
But I think XXXHolic is worth the read.

Isn't that manga/anime kind of insanely popular all over the world right now? oo;

Hm... not where I live. Unless you're insanely Asian, you won't even know what Death Note is in the first place.

I live in Israel and I don't think the number of anime fans here who haven't heard of this series surpasses two. It's really popular in the US as well, from what I gather.
Offline
Death Note is pretty popular here, actually..
And word to whoever mentioned Gravitation. I run into so many annoying yaoi fangirls for that show. I mean, I like me some yaoi and one of my favourite pairings is yaoi, but most yaoi fangirls can get way too squealy and annoying. (not to mention prone to bashing female characters a lot..)
Offline
I personally love Gravitation. Some fangirls can get pretty annoying though, I KNOW, being one [just not the insanely annoying type...I hope...]. I mean, yeah, I definately love my yaoi, but come on, not every het couple is "just a lie!" For some, nothing is sacred... That sounded so weird.
I saw it mentioned that most things that come on American TV end up on the overrated list. That's pretty much it. I mean, the big fanbase for something like Death Note is different from the fanbase for Naruto, simply because most Death Note fans have been anime fans for a while, therefore are already a section within themselves. Naruto fans, mainly [not all, but many] are just people who like the show, not anime in general. That's okay, who am I to tell people what to like? But that adds greatly to the number of fans outside the anime community, therefore makes Naruto a very different kind of overrated.
I think that Elfen Lied is somewhat underrated. It's an amazing show, but many people I talk to have never seen it. Many have never even heard of it. It isn't deathly underrated, but I think it could use more recognition.

Inu Yasha is way way WAY over-rated. Its decent, but its nothing special. The only thing I really found noteworthy about it at all was the fact that you could miss fifty episodes and still sit down and watch an episode and know exactly what was going on. At the same time, this was exactly its problem: the characters were extremely static, and nothing ever really changed.
I actually think Death Note is a bit over-rated. It's pretty good, but people act like its the best thing since sliced-bread, and while good, I don't think it is quite that.
I think the Ghost Hunt anime is extremely under-rated. The animation is a bit simple, and it starts off a bit slow, but its a good series and I love the characters. It also gets really creepy around episode 17.
I also think Goldfish Alert is under-rated, at least outside of Japan, although it is now about sixteen years old, so I can see why. Its a cute series, and the characters are downright charming. Ikuhara was actually an episode director for this.
Ok, I gotta go get more dinner, but I definitely have more to say on this subject.

Well in Mexico is terrible underated, is one of those series that have a big international fandom but not enough followers in Mexico to maintain a spanish speaking forum.

Yaoi bores me and because of that my opinion could be biased but I think Gravitation is EXTREMELY overated.

To me Clover is the pinacle of their style, chobbits could give more but was still enjoyable but still even if their drawing style has become cleaner storywise they have been going down... I still like XXXholic though
And to the ones who mentiond Inuyasha, the problem with it is that it has become TOO LONG. :gonk:Seems like Rumiko wants to break a guiness record or something.

Wait... Inuyasha is still ongoing?
I think there's another overrated anime- Pokemon... It's been going on too long, too. But I guess as long as Nintendo keeps making pokemon related games, it's not gonna stop.
I wonder if an anime still continues if one of the casts quits or something.

Overrated: Naruto, Inuyasha... and DBZ is forever beyond overrated. Prolly Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh GX, too.
Underrated: I liked Turn A Gundam, It's too bad it'll prolly never come out over here.

The manga is, somebody should just tell mrs Takahashi she won't die if she finishes her manga, the world won't end

Underrated - Kimagure Orange Road
Okay, so maybe I have a soft spot for 1980s teen romance. Plus, Madoka is a goddess - my first anime character love.

I don't watch much anime anymore, but I do read manga, if it's okay to post that.
Overrated - Under the Glass Moon, Aria, X/1999 (I still love it), Cardcaptor Sakura, Princess Ai, Gravitation, Video Girl Ai
Underrated- Tokyo Babylon, xxxHolics (certain parts of it are awesome), Clover (really, Clamp's most beautiful stuff as far as I'm concerned) and MARS. I have such a soft spot for that one. Also Tramps Like Us. Paradise Kiss got shit treatment at first, but then they made it an anime, and now everyone's all up in it.

I know this is kind of old news, but since the new anime elite seems to think Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien is the best thing since free porn on the internet, I feel like I should say that it makes me feel like scratching out my corneas.
Annnnnnnnnd I've already said Red Garden is the only winter anime I'm watching, and it's been horribly overlooked, as were Simoun, Ray, and Jigoku Shoujo (to an extent).
I read a lot more manga than anime too, but I'm not in the mood to make lists. Genshiken isn't nearly what I expected it to be. The way everyone descibed it I thought I'd be rolling. Seizon - LIFE is my currently running favourite. It's really heartwarming, and Pure Trance is pretty cool too. Aiesu and Tramps Like Us/Kimi wa Pet is some other manga I'm crazy about. I'll stfu before this becomes my personal manga recommendation tour.

Takahashi was once quoted on the matter as saying she was having fun, and might go on to 80 volumes.
Considering she's the richest woman in Japan and everything she touches makes money, I suppose she's got the ability to do whatever she likes.
