I checked the movie website... the only two people from the main cast are Haru and Makoto. Really?? Nagisa was in the novel too, and some of the biggest moments happened with Sousuke and Haru. And since Kisumi has been getting more merch recently I thought for sure he'd be in the movie. I hope this is just a preliminary list. I already wasn't hyped for the movie because of the prospect of no Rin and no Rei - but this just killed any desire I had at all to see it.

Yes, the movie is HS2 only.    Aki is in the manga (which features HS1 alone) but I haven't seen anything saying she's going to be in the movie.

I wish HS1 was getting the movie instead. Imo HS2 was the weaker of the two books, but maybe I'm just biased because the new characters were boring to me and they took up so much of the book.  Some people have been speculating that they made HS2 a movie instead of HS1 because they plan on making another movie (maybe called Future Days) that have HS2 characters in it also, but so far it's just speculation and I would be kind of surprised if they made a second movie.

Having no Rei was bad for me personally since he's my favorite, but I could understand the decision; he's not an original book character and I think he's a less popular character than, say, Haruka. BUT as much as I am not a Rin fan, he is a HUGELY popular character, I don't get it.

Why do I want to see the characters I spent two series invsted in, not only younger and thus reverted to their less-developed and nuanced selves, not to mention most of the cast missing?. I already watched Haru 'learn to be part of a team'. What I enjoy is watching the boys interact together; I would, in all honesty, prefer an Arabian nights au or even a watergun fight movie, simply to see the whole bunch, samezuka & iwatobi hanging and interacting. Even a snippet of their college days, and the boys can meet up & swim for charity or some such nonsense. New characters that look like repeats in terms of character design? And we all know that 99%  of the appeal for audiences is the hot boys....so they make them young enough where calling them hot is a bit disturbing ? I'll just go watch Haikyuu or something....

Also, why do they all look like their uniform are waaaaaaay to big for them?
Ok mini rant over. This is why I limit my sports boy anime, I get too invested lol.

A third season? I love Free! and all, but do they really have enough material for a 3rd season?

I don't see why they couldn't make an actual third season. The bulk of the Free! anime is basically original material anyway even if it uses the light novel characters so there is nothing stopping them from writing more. And there is a lot of potential for pushing the franchise into actual professional, or at least semi, swimming competitions. The potential is without limits, really. They have a chance to tie in the light novel boys that are already well known from the movie to the rest of the story, for example. Or/and they can have Rin and Haru in the same team again. 
If they go down the OVA path they can animate some of the funnier drama CD moments.

Then again, they may go the prequel route yet again and have the boys as toddlers splashing around.

Personally, apart from an Olympic setting, which would be absolutely amazing, I'd love an alt universe based on the Splash Free ED. It could not hold for a whole season but it'd make one hell of a cool OVA, everyone in this Arabian Nights, Princely-Rin themed spinoff.
