This is a static copy of In the Rose Garden, which existed as the center of the western Utena fandom for years. Enjoy. :)
Anyone have any good recommendations? There aren't too many out there that I've seen.

Thanks! I'll check it out.

I know there are a few in the fandom section on EM, but it depends on what you want out of it. Nanami fics tend to favor more absurd kind of stories, I guess it's less appealing, or more challenging, to write seriously about her as a character.

These are just off the top of my head, but "Stage Props" (http://archiveofourown.org/works/274175) and "The Ones Who Float" (http://archiveofourown.org/works/336377) are both pretty good, I think.
I know Alan Harnum had another couple of Nanami-centric fics that were more serious than "Sovereignty-Associatonist Girl Nanami"--"Beneath the Skin" (http://www.thekeep.org/~harnums/fanfic/utena/skin.txt) and "Fugue" (http://www.thekeep.org/~harnums/fanfic/utena/fugue.txt), though it's been several years since I've read either, so my memory of their quality might be a little hazy.

I don't mind absurd stories. I love all Nanami stories. Though I do prefer serious ones. Nanami is my 4th favorite character (after Anthy, Utena and Mikage) so I like seeing fanfics about her, even though they're rare. Some day I'd like to see a Mitsuru/Nanami story, you don't see that pairing a lot. It's probably because Mitsuru looks so much younger but the age gap isn't that far apart and I think when he grew up a little more they'd be cute together.

Thank you! I loved all of those, but especially Stage Props and Fugue. They were all great.

Oh yeah, I'd forgotten about Fugue. That was a good story! Speaking of Harnum, I thought Nanami was pretty great in Jacquemart. Admittedly, it is in no way a "Nanami fanfic," but she is more prominent than many of the other characters.

Thanks so much for linking me to these. They made me fall in love with Nanami all over again.

Is it just me or does good Nanami-centric fanfics always lean towards the short, one-chapter side (I say this because even Jaquemart, while giving Nanami a big part, is not really Nanami-centric any more than it's Juri-centric or Shiori centric . . .); same with Miki . Touga, Saionji, and Juri, on the other hand, all seem to get many lengthy and/or multi-part fics focusing on them.

I would agree. I think that many Utena fanfics are centered on romance or ships though, which automatically leaves Nanami out because she doesn't ever really seem to have a canon romantic interest. Utena, Miki, Touga, Saionji, and Juri do though, at least in one medium or another.

I always wonder, couldn't Tsuwabuki have a chance of at least dating Nanami, if not ultimately being a real couple with her? I mean, he's 9 and Nanami 13; in a 10 years later post series fic, they'd be 19 and 23 . . . hardly an implausible pairing.

Tsuwabuki could work if you're going the romance route, or you could make up an OC, though OCs can be tricky. (I rarely read romance fic focusing on OCs myself.) Either way, a longer Nanami-fic could be interesting. I would try it myself, but I don't have any plot bunnies, and I'm not used to writing fan fiction.

I've always wanted to read a Nanami/Tsuwabuki centered story. I think they're a really cute couple. But there are just none out there. ;_; Usually when Nanami has a love interest, Miki or Saionji seem to be the two most popular choices in fanfic.

I think the same as you guys, which is one of the many reasons why I'm writing my current fic: so Nanami & Tsuwabuki can be shown as a couple for maybe the first time in this fandom's fic history (though due to the even roles of the main cast, the story's by no means centered only on these two).
And a Nanami-centred fic would likely be one focused on personal growth. There are a number of good short ones as mentioned upthread, but I still long for an epic Nanami multi-part work (well-written epic fics that gets finished = best fics). . .

I think Tsuwabuki could work when they're older, it's just that the age they're at is more like one where kids are mostly concentrating on having friends and learning. I mean, a 9 and 13 year old having a deep, meaningful relationship? Not implausible, but it seems like it would be more of a crush-turned-relationship years in the future.

Me agree, I like them as a 10-years-later post series fic pairing
P.S. Due to all this Nanami/Tsuwabuki discussion, I've opened a new thread for rare (but still possible) pairings in SKU fics over at http://forums.ohtori.nu/viewtopic.php?id=3103
Fire away with your plot bunnies, guys!

Finally found this thread again so I can post this:
Idylls of the Rose Prince by Jougetsu
Summary: Ten years after the events of the series, Nanami and Himemiya probe the mystery of Utena's disappearance.
Link: http://archiveofourown.org/series/33286
The (extremely talented) author had told me that Idylls is a multi-part epic that has been planned out in its entirety, so the chance of this actually getting finished is high

Just finished another little gem at AO3:
Immersible Millennial Egg by kurushi (trust me, it IS Nanami centric)
Summary: Juri arrives at the decision to leave Ohtori and return to the outside world, haunted by childhood memories of the story of Urashima Taro and a folded paper box.
