This is a static copy of In the Rose Garden, which existed as the center of the western Utena fandom for years. Enjoy. :)
Welcome to the second playthrough/translation of the Utena game for the Sega Saturn, Itsuka Kakumeisareru Monogatari (sometimes known among the English fandom as "Four Days at Ohtori," after the most famous web site devoted to the game). The previous game can be found at the link below, and you may want to read it first, if you want to be on the same page as everybody else.
Let's Play! Utena for the Sega Saturn
This time around, all gameplay information (about points, paths, and how to get endings) can and will be freely spoiled. However, I'd like to maintain our policy of not spoiling plot information (about characters, events, and revelations) that hasn't come up in this thread or its predecessor. If you don't actually know the plot, though, feel free to speculate! Let's enjoy our exploration!
Despite some waffling on my part at the end of the last thread, and a tentative resolution to stalk Miki to get at his hot sister, for the time being we're going to continue our system of having everyone vote on every choice. Jump in at any time, new readers and lurkers!
Oh, and I'm jotting down the background music this time, just for fun.
NOTE: This thread is now complete, and was followed by several others. For convenience's sake, here are the links:

Let's Play! Utena SPECIAL: For Power, Perhaps
What, an application form? No problem, we know what our name is. It's Bla Lnt!
...I mean, Kageno D-ko. Let's get this party (re)started!
(Music: The Sunlit Garden, D1T4)
D-ko:
Transfer schools?
Father:
That's right. You've heard of it before too, haven't you?
It's a place in Houou City called Ohtori Academy.
D-ko:
Ohtori Academy... isn't that a private school!?
Mother:
You know, a long time ago, your father used to teach at Ohtori Academy.
Father:
Thanks to that connection, Ohtori's Chairman of the Board asked if we'd like to send you there.
So what do you think? Isn't a nice offer?
D-ko:
Yeah...
Father:
It's an excellent place, you know... Ohtori Academy.
Mother:
In fact, it's the place where your father and I met.
D-ko:
Really?
Father:
That's right... if you go, you should check out the fencing hall.
It's a pretty, chalk-white building behind the library. You'll notice it right away.
D-ko:
Dad, you used to be a really strong fencer, right?
Father:
Yeah... so when I was at Ohtori, I acted as the Fencing Club's advisor.
Mother:
Back then, your father was really dreamy!
Father:
You were pretty cool as well, in your fencing suit.
Mother:
[giggle] I may have looked cool, but I wasn't very good...
Father:
That's all right. It's fine if girls aren't strong...
Ah, it's good to see our kind, Touga-and-Shiori-looking parents again, lovingly sending us into the very jaws of death. And reminding us that it's okay for girls not to be strong. If they want crazy blue-haired psychopaths to murder them with poisoned, thumbtack-filled pastries, that is.
(stock footage "morning at Ohtori" shots)
(Music: Eros of the Ball, D1T11)
D-ko:
So this is Ohtori Academy...
(Music: Scarlet of the Campus, D1T5)
iWhat a huge difference from my old school!
(I mean, it's so extravagant!)
And the school grounds almost look caged off...
Naturally, (it has a beautiful gate),
and the campus is so large!
Let's see... where's the (central building)...?
Middle school, high school... there are so many buildings!
It's ridiculous!
And then, this birdcage-looking building...
...I guess it's a conservatory?
Man, at its best, my old school had a rabbit hutch.
It figures.
I'm still not certain what D-ko's saying during parts of this voiced-over, textless animated segment. It's a good thing I'm a lazy translator, and I'm still not going to spend the time to work it out!
Huh?
What's that?
I thought I heard a voice from somewhere over there, but...
Oh, someone's there!
(Music: Invisible Roses, D1T11)
Saionji:
Why, Anthy?
Are you saying that our love was a lie?
On that night, didn't you swear to devote yourself to me?
Anthy:
I'm currently engaged to Utena-sama.
Saionji:
So you're saying you can't accept my love?
Anthy:
Yes.
D-ko:
Wow, so soon after transferring, and I've already run across such an amazing scene!
I wonder if that's a high school student... he looks so mature and good-looking. Is that girl his girlfriend?
Anthy:
I am the Rose Bride... I do as the victor of the duels wishes.
Saionji:
...as they wish...
Anthy:
Yes. As they wish.
"One of these days, Anthy, one of these days... Bang! Zoom! Straight to the moon!"
From now on, I'll be marking the choices we made last time in italics. This doesn't mean we can't choose them.
There's no disadvantage to trying to intervene, even though we don't accomplish anything and Utena has to save the day as usual. Saionji doesn't even dislike us for it. I guess with Saionji, getting him to notice you is a victory in itself, even if you have to do it by annoying him. Shall we repeat our heroism, or bow out this time?

First post in the new game!
Intervene. Choosing to sit by doesn't earn us any points, and gaining Utena points is neccessary for winning the game. We don't want to get into a car crash again, do we? For Anthy-haters, there are far more effective ways to traumatize Anthy than to watch her w/ a high-school bully (ways less hazardous for Saionji's health too). For Anthy and Utena fans, intervening helps Anthy and Utena. Win-win-win all around.

Intervene, indeed.

Yay, a second round! The first one was lots of fun, except when it abruptly ended...
Naturally we intervene!

Is this even a choice?

Put it in.
I mean intervene.

Intervene.

Yay! These are so much fun. Poor Miki, people only like him for his hot sister.

"How cruel, I've got to help her!"
Mother:
You know, a long time ago, your father used to teach at Ohtori Academy.
...
Mother:
In fact, it's the place where your father and I met.
It's been a while since I first read this scene; I forgot that D-ko's father was a teacher and not a student. I just assumed both her parents were students, but it seems as if her mother was and her father wasn't.... and that's fitting for Ohtori.

Intervene, Utena will show up and save the day either way but this way we get points.

Intervene. Saionji's only mudding things up in our heads by abusing Anthy at this point in the plot, giving the illusion that Anthy's just a powerless li'l thing.
Offline
Slap Anthy ourselves.
That's not an option? No? Okay, fine, then I guess intervene.

May I just say the title of this thread is positively hilarious?
I vote intervene.
Offline
I didn't notice it the first time round, but don't D-ko's parents look like grown-up Touga and Shiori?
Intervene, by the way, though it doesn't seem like there's even a need to vote.
Offline
See if Saionji feels like kicking her...or intervene, I guess...

Because D-ko was around, all the girls of the world were princesses! Yes, thanks to D-ko, the world was overflowing with light!
D-ko:
Hey, stop it!
Hitting a girl like that... you call yourself a man?
Saionji:
What the... who the hell are you?
D-ko:
I'm Kageno D-ko, a transfer student.
Saionji:
People should kindly not meddle in things that don't concern them.
D-ko:
It does concern me! I'm a girl too!
Saionji:
...honestly, first Tenjou Utena, and now this girl.
If you're just a transfer student, then why...
Utena:
What was that about me?
(Music: Campus Scarlet, D1T5)
Saionji:
Tenjou...
Anthy:
Utena-sama...
Utena:
Stay away from Anthy, Saionji!
Saionji:
You again?
Utena:
...
Saionji:
Hmmph. Fine, then.
Soon I'll duel you and take back the Rose Bride.
Anthy, please endure until then.
(he leaves)
(Music: The Sunlit Garden, D1T4)
Utena:
Himemiya, are you okay?
Anthy:
Yes, I'm fine, Utena-sama.
Utena:
I want to thank you, too, uh...
D-ko:
Kageno D-ko. I'm a 2nd year in the Middle School.
I just transferred here today.
Utena:
Yeah? I'm Tenjou Utena. This is Himemiya Anthy.
And that love-struck idiot from before was...
Anthy:
Utena-sama, classes are about to begin.
Utena:
Oh, right.
(It would be cool if we ended up in the same class.)
See you later!
D-ko:
Ah, wait a minute!
...they already left.
Utena is really cool! ...and that girl with the glasses was cute as well.
For some reason, I feel like something good is going to happen!
You feel like something good is going to happen, huh? Well, don't worry. You'll be cured of that soon enough!
(Music: Morning Lyrical, D3T3)
Teacher: (Male)
Starting from today, a new classmate will be joining you in your studies,
here in Middle School 2nd Year, Class C.
You... before you sit down, please introduce yourself.
D-ko:
Self introduction, huh?
First impressions are really important, so I've gotta do this properly.
Hello! I'm Kageno D-ko.
I'm coming from a public middle school, so this will be my first experience with dorm life.
I'm looking forward to finding out what it's like!
Um, my dorm is...
Teacher:
Actually, your dorm hasn't been decided yet.
Please ask after school, when you go to introduce yourself to the Chairman of the Board.
Your bags should have arrived by then, as well.
D-ko:
Uh, sure!
I don't understand the addresses or campus at all yet, so everyone, please help me out!
(D-ko goes to her desk.)
(Music: Campus Lyric, D1T6)
Utena:
Hey, we meet again.
D-ko:
Oh, Utena-san!
Utena:
Just "Utena" is fine.
In exchange, I'll just call you by your given name too, okay?
Adding "san" and "kun" and all that is a pain, right?
D-ko:
Utena... Tenjou Utena, huh?
Getting to make friends with someone like this on my first day is really lucky!
Now that I've gotten to know Utena, I want to talk some more, but...
What should I talk about?
CHOICE:
Do you have a girlfriend?
Do you have a boyfriend? (+1 UTENA)
Remember, we're still confused about her sex. And Utena likes it when people acknowledge the existence of her girly bits.

Boyfriend, although we know she's got a girlfriend.

My gut tells me girlfriend.
My brain tells me boyfriend.
...let's ask her about her boyfriend.

Where her boyfriend at?

Do you have a boyfriend?
Unrelated: Utena looks really good in that last screenshot.
