This is a static copy of In the Rose Garden, which existed as the center of the western Utena fandom for years. Enjoy. :)
I'm surprised this hasn't gotten a topic yet. Right Stuf announced today that they will release a Blu-Ray version of the series next year. That's right, people. Utena is finally coming to North America in HD.

As I look at my DVD set, two thoughts come to mind:
1. I'll have to pay for the series again, dammit!
2. How many live chickens will I have to sacrifice before I can convince the gods to create a new dub as well?

...s...seriously? I haven't even been watching because I figured why the hell would they do that???
If this release lives up to their gorgeous DVDs. I'm onboard like a boss.

Wow. How do you even release SKU in HD? I guess I don't have much of a sense of the mechanics of animation, but the cel photography couldn't have been done in HD, could it? HD wasn't invented yet.
Well, we can say this: Touga's nose will never have been as big as his fist this crisply.

Well i guess that schedules my next rewatch...
But i'd definitely be interested to see how much the quality improves as satyreyes said...

I think SKU is 100% cel animation, so as long as they still have the film, HD is no problem. It's the early digipaint ones that don't look good in HD.
Justin Sevakis breaks it down here, in the last question:

But Sevakis also notes:
The disparity in quality has as much to do with the selection of shows as the process itself. Rather than pick the cleanest, most scale-able masters, it seems like they'll run just about anything -- even old LD masters of shot-on-film series from 1992 -- through the process, slap it on a Blu-ray, and expect fans to buy it. The results can be pretty heinous. Just ask anyone unfortunate enough to have bought the Japanese Blu-rays of Irresponsible Captain Tylor or Cat Girl Nuku Nuku.
So it's not to be taken for granted that they still have the film. Of note, however, Irresponsible Captain Tylor is a Nozomi title, but Nozomi seems to have declined to release the Tylor Blu-rays in America. That gives me some confidence that they would not be bringing it over if it weren't a quality product.

I saw some comparison shots of Utena DVD vs. Utena blu-ray on some forum and blu-ray looked pretty good to me. then again i dont know much about this kinda thing but it... it looked nice!
Offline
I'm really excited for this.
I own the Japanese blu-rays and they do indeed look quite good.

Do any of you guys know if the blu-rays will be region-locked like the old box sets? Would be nice to have Utena on DVD in the UK without having to work around not having a US DVD player.
Offline
I don't even double dip in DVD/Blu-Ray for shows I really like but I would buy the hell out of more Utena boxes. This also means I'd have to get an actual Blu-Ray player...
Offline
I got a PS3 pretty much for its ability to play BR.

Oooooh! Maybe there will be another ring release with it! I liked the DVD one, but it is SUPER BIG and kinda clunky. Juri's locket would be a nice release item too!
What would be super boss, would be if there was something cool with each box set, instead of just one item if you happened to buy them all during the promo period. Regular Signet/Black Rose Signet/Locket or even small things like charms and keychains would be super sweet.
TT_____TT I don't even have a blu-ray player, but I want the set.

That'd be nice but I'm almost wondering how they're going to top themselves. The remasters came in great packaging and were all around masterfully done, but I can't expect all those bells and whistles on every release...can I?
Offline
I've bought it three times already...what's one more? <smile>

Tried to initiate the boyfriend into the Utena fold... he said it looked too dated for him and that it didn't age well.
Guess who is getting an Utena Blu-Ray set to push the issue.
This household is going to be a 2 set household. One for me -- and one for indoctrination

I didn't think so at the time, and I don't think it was true then, but looking at it now in relation to other things SKU seems to move very slowly. Or just that anime and media in general have become even more fast paced than it was in the 90's. I think if it wasn't already a classic a lot of people would get bored by JP (SKU) because it takes OH SO LONG to get to the big bloody dinosaurs (...Akio?).

3 sets? It looks like we won't be getting those awesome Japanese twin-boxes (where they hold hands at the back). Still, I'm glad that Nozomi Ent is finally releasing Blu-rays, and SKU is a great start! I'm definitely getting it … again. As for bonuses … another ring? How about a prize figure? One can dream … haha

I'll most definitely be getting this as I do not even have all of SKU on DVD as it is. I have a few Black Rose episodes that I managed to find a long time again at an actual physical store and then ran into issues completing it online. So this is the perfect opportunity for updating to blu ray.

Hey guys. The release has been re-announced for 2017!
Both the anime and manga are getting re-releases over here this year. It is, after all, Utena's 20th anniversary!!

There's going to be a Blu-Ray of Utena? <---- (I missed that emoticon.)

Does someone have a link to the announcement? I tweeted at Right Stuf Anime back at the end of November and they claimed to not have a date for it. I hope to God it's real, though, because HYYYYYYYYPE
