This is a static copy of In the Rose Garden, which existed as the center of the western Utena fandom for years. Enjoy. :)

/BATMANWHAT A TWEEEST!
HOT DIGGITY! YOU'VE SOLVED THE MYSTERY OF MAWARU PENGUINDRUM!
I mean, he magically got 2 tickets to go to the onsen that Ringo and Yuri also happened to be at.
Shouma's friend? His name's Yamashita. The reason you don't see his face is that he doesn't have one. He used to be a hentai game protagonist, you see. In most performing gigs his lack of a face would put him at a marked disadvantage, but it's just what he needed to become a star in the world of pornographic computer software. Makes it easier for players to put themselves in his shoes. He's appeared in hundreds of games engaged in all manner of sexual acts, but he felt that it stunted his career and went looking for a more original project to work on.
Ikuhara auditioned him and brought him onto Penguindrum mainly because he saw lots of... storytelling potential in Yamashita's daikon-sized genitalia. However, Yamashita insisted that he did not want to film any sex scenes, having joined the project to explore his potential as an avant-garde dramatic actor. Ikuhara was frustrated but didn't want to shut him out completely, so he gave Yamashita a bit part as Shouma's friend.
Anyway, episode 20 was incredible. Not only is the kitten incident a shout-out to Nanami, it reminds me of Kanba's earlier high-speed chase. And how appropriate to give Takehito Koyasu the role of Mr. Takakura. There's something electrifying about hearing the episode's opening monologue in the voice of the false prince. What Takakura says seriously (or does he believe it himself?) I can imagine Touga saying in a joking manner (but not without realizing how true it can be).
Himari as Momoka reincarnated is an interesting theory. I figured that Himari's parents were among the cult members arrested after the gas attack - the ones Takakura mentions in his second speech. I guess now we know what kind of scandal Masako's father was involved in, and the reason for the different penguin symbols. The one character whose origins haven't been revealed is Sanetoshi, and I expect we'll be learning more about him soon.

Semantically, yes; phonetically, no. What Himari says, transcribed phonetically, is "San-chan" -- the same thing she later calls Penguin #3, since three is "san" in Japanese. Shouma infers correctly from context that Himari is naming the kitten Sun-chan (or Sunny), pronouncing the English word "sun" with a Japanese accent. Dramatic irony makes this name a cross-linguistic pun.
Yes, I'm well aware that that is the case. However, contextually it is "Sun-chan" not 3-chan, even though the word would be written サンちゃん. So 3-chan the penguin is not necessarily named after Sunny the kitten. Especially since the other two penguins are named 1 & 2.

Mmmm.... yeah, 3-chan and Sun-chan are different, but one can't help but feel that the homophone with the two different names weren't purely accidental, given that this is Ikuhara.
Maybe he's trolling us into thinking that there's meaning behind 3-chan and Sun-chan, when there really isn't. :|a

Of course not.

Had a pretty neat little flash of insight about the Child Broiler today. I remember where, exactly, I've seen the imagery of children on an assembly line being dropped into a machine before!
Pink Floyd's "Another Brick on the Wall" music video shows hoards of school children walking an assembly line, riding a conveyor and being dropped into a machine which then grinds them into meat.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t4SKL7f9n58
The imagery isn't an exact duplicate, but it's Pink Floyd. The video's iconic enough I'd *strongly doubt* he wouldn't have been deliberately drawing influence on it.
Just to throw it on the pool of things Penguindrum's referencing.

Wow, very good catch! And yes, it is an iconic video. Either a self-conscious nod or a very remarkable confluence of metaphors.

Holy crap!
I just had an Utena/Himari moment when I just clicked that music video!
I've seen that video when I was in Kindergarten, but never knew it was Pink Floyd, so it just ended up as a vaguely faint echo in my head for 20 years going, "We don't need no education."
Actually, considering that I didn't know English at the time, it was more like a garbled murmur... going in the same tune. And I remembered a riot happening in the end.

And from that moment, your life was all about to find that magic song, and therefore be able to save the word, didn't you?

That would be a pretty dark revelation, then, actually... Unlike those of Himari and Utena :|a

Utena reference in episode 21? (Spoilers obviously.) http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v232/ … 495732.jpg [ "Wait for me, Kanba!" Of course, Himari parting from Shouma is more amicable than Anthy leaving Akio. But oh man, THIS EPISODE. So much action! The sibling beatdown, the parents are really dead, Tabuki getting stabbed, Kanba going to join the cult and Himari chasing after him to save him. Things are getting intense. That little flashback at the end was adorable too.]

Oh god... what did I just see
[So I guess the whole thing with Kanba talking to his parents... were actually all in his head all along? It seemed that way...
I can't help but say thank god they get rid of that stalking guy. That would've been troublesome if he was left alive.
Also... so none of the kids were related to each other, huh... I guess that means Shoma is the only biological son of Takakura Kenzan.
But still... Ikuni said that the latter half of Penguindrum is going to be where the roller coaster slopes down... he wasn't kidding. Not at all. ]
On a completely non-spoiler note: It would seem that Penguindrum will be done by December 23. Just a couple days before Christmas!
Seriously? I'm gonna say that Penguindrum is probably one of my best Christmas presents ever this year!!!
I think I'm gonna send Ikuhara a thank you mail/email or something on Christmas eve. Yes... I shall do that... :|a

Wait, do you actually have access to my man Ikuhara's e-mail / mail?
Because I've always wanted to say sweet things to him. Ever since that fateful day in 2000 where he mistook me for a woman and tried to look down my shirt.
(actually happened.)

No, I don't, unfortunately.
But this is where the adventure begins: The quest for Ikuni's address
I feel like a stalker now. He's a bad influence, and I love/hate him for it.

I havent gotten to watch it yet, I'm currently babysitting for a couple hours...but I am SO excited!! Only three more episodes after this though
And if you really want to contact Ikuni, he has a twitter It's @ikuni_noise (I was googling his name in Japanese and found it). I found a bit over a year, maybe year and a half ago? But....As for being a stalker LOL I drew portraits of him and send them to him (is that being a bit TOO creepy? XD I haven't done it in a while. but he's so fun to draw XD) But he replies in bits of english like "Oh! I got a cool art, thank you!" was my first tweet back xD and if you ask him little questions in english, he replies! XD I was so excited! Back before we knew what the anime would be I asked "Is it an anime version of Nokemono to Hanayome?" and he said he replied saying it was something else XD but he totally replies and stuff. I was SO excited, he's such an inspiration personally and it's just awesome!
Chiho Saito has a twitter too if anyone wants it, it's @chihochat , she replies in english sometimes too:)

That sounds like it's worth actually using my twitter for!
By the by -- this week's episode, there's an actual flashback after the ending song, so definitely don't shut down the movie until it's over.

Oh my god yes!!!
Thank you, Yuzu!
One thing I like about Ikuni's creativity in the making of the anime series is that I can tell he's not someone who would "waste food". He would add or change things here and there from time to time to make the entire episode worth watching. I mean, lately, each episode has a different ending song, and just a tad bit more variation to the ending sequence. Not a whole lot of difference, but enough to make it interesting. Same for the opening sequence animation, too. The glass bits that surrounded Himari looked more "defined", and there's sprout coming out from the background when Kanba was dipping Princess of the Crystal. Not to mention you can make out their features more rather than just a mere silhouette.

Did Himari & Kanba bit at the end remind anyone else of the childhood Usagi & Mamoru piece from the Sailormoon R movie?

No... but it did now. :|a
It's amazing how [the bandage held so much sentimental value to Kanba. I bet the bandage on Penguin #1's face actually represents that one moment in his life that he wanted to cherish forever.]

Oh man. My poor heart is in shreds.
Quick question: do we actually know who was stabbed?
Offline
aw you're welcome **
Yes, I always watch until the end because I love the art pieces that are shown! and that little flashback was so sweet.... </3 T_T I think this week's art piece is my favorite out of all so far:) I REALLY loved the ed this time! I like them all, but this one especially I hope there is a CD released here with all these songs.

That means it will probably come off #1's face at some point. It's a shield against being hurt for him.

This episode was heartbreaking! Because we didn't have the "show" of elevators threatening to kill Himari, or amazing fantasy-filled flashbacks...it was just so raw, and so real, we all saw the normal streets and the normal park and the normal house, and yet none of the feelings were normal! It's as if the truth is finally crashing down on us, and it's so sad
And, suddenly, we remember that the show was not about Momoka after all...

Hrm. Wondering if the Penguindrum is INSIDE TEH BEAR.
I mean, it's not like bear's stomachs splitting open to reveal thangs inside is a thing that happens in this show.
Also, I wonder why Kanba is so dedicated to curing Himari's illness and not his own biological brother, Mario's?
