Poetry that fits Utena

Well, I was reading that fic 'Unveiling the Coffin' (again) and I hadn't recalled the poetry bit... but I did remember once a poem by t s elliot that I thought would make an excellent duel song: Hallow Men. It just sounds perfectly in sync with what J A Seazer writes. Not sure if this topic has been done before, but meh.

Re: Poetry that fits Utena

That's "Hollow Men," Anthiena emot-smile  And I think you're right: it does sound a lot like Seazer!  This kind of disjointed, impressionistic poetry is Eliot's specialty, and his images are even more fleeting and dismal than usual in Hollow Men, making it especially appropriate.

This topic hasn't been done before to my memory, though there is one (actually, two, I think) for image songs for Utena characters.  Interesting!

Re: Poetry that fits Utena

The first poem that comes to my mind in the context of Utena is this one:

William Blake wrote:

The Sick Rose

O Rose, thou art sick!
The Invisible worm,
That flies in the night,
In the howling storm,

Has found out thy bed
Of Crimson joy;
And his dark secret love
Does thy life destroy.

Our invisible worm here is Akio, or false princes, or the idea of adulthood, depending on your bent.

Re: Poetry that fits Utena

I'd say that "The Waste Land" (also by TS Eliot) is one of the perfect Utena poems. (thank you Alexiel.net.)

Spinning, weaving round each new experience.
Recognize this as a holy gift and
Celebrate this chance to be alive and breathing

Re: Poetry that fits Utena

I know it's terribly typical, but Robert Frost's Stopping By Woods On A Snowy Evening seems to fit. I think that's more a statement on the ambiguity of the poem than the actual similarities, though.

Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village, though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little horse must think it's queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.

He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there's some mistake.
The only other sound's the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.

The woods are lovely, dark, and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

It reminds me of the whole final struggle with the promise to Dios to save Anthy and whatnot.

To Helen by Edgar Allen Poe would be a nicely put way for Keiko to describe Touga or Miki and Utena describing Anthy. http://poetry.poetryx.com/poems/7868/

Re: Poetry that fits Utena

I was just revisiting Anne Sexton's work and thinking how much of Transformations, echoes against SKU quite nicely.

From "Briar Rose":

Briar Rose
was an insomniac...
She could not nap
or lie in sleep
without the court chemist
mixing her some knock-out drops
and never in the prince's presence.

From "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs":

And thus Snow White became the prince's bride.
The wicked queen was invited to the wedding feast
and when she arrived there were
red-hot iron shoes,
in the manner of red-hot roller skates,
clamped upon her feet.
First your toes will smoke
and then your heels will turn black
and you will fry upward like a frog,
she was told.
And so she danced until she was dead,
a subterranean figure,
her tongue flicking in and out
like a gas jet.
Meanwhile Snow White held court,
rolling her china-blue doll eyes open and shut
and sometimes referring to her mirror
as women do.

Re: Poetry that fits Utena

I thought this one by Pablo Neruda fit well, for Anthy, really. Or possibly any member of the cast.

If You Forget Me by Pablo Neruda wrote:

I want you to know
one thing.

You know how this is:
if I look
at the crystal moon, at the red branch
of the slow autumn at my window,
if I touch
near the fire
the impalpable ash
or the wrinkled body of the log,
everything carries me to you,
as if everything that exists,
aromas, light, metals,
were little boats
that sail
toward those isles of yours that wait for me.

Well, now,
if little by little you stop loving me
I shall stop loving you little by little.

If suddenly
you forget me
do not look for me,
for I shall already have forgotten you.

If you think it long and mad,
the wind of banners
that passes through my life,
and you decide
to leave me at the shore
of the heart where I have roots,
remember
that on that day,
at that hour,
I shall lift my arms
and my roots will set off
to seek another land.

But
if each day,
each hour,
you feel that you are destined for me
with implacable sweetness,
if each day a flower
climbs up to your lips to seek me,
ah my love, ah my own,
in me all that fire is repeated,
in me nothing is extinguished or forgotten,
my love feeds on your love, beloved,
and as long as you live it will be in your arms
without leaving mine.

Re: Poetry that fits Utena

Here's one that's popular in the UK that fits Utena pretty well.  It's also, IMHO, a beautifully constructed piece of lyricism.  We'll stick in some snarky commentary in white text to complete the effect.

If, Rudyard Kipling

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
[The story of Utena's life.]
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you
But make allowance for their doubting too,
[I don't know if Utena understands self-doubt, but we'll give her a pass on this one.]
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise:
[Utena looks fantastic, but otherwise she's a good fit; her nobility is characterized by its grace under pressure.  She's certainly got "nor talk to wise" going for her.]

If you can dream--and not make dreams your master, [Bingo.]
If you can think--and not make thoughts your aim; [Can Utena think?]
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same; [She is the Energizer Bunny.]
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools:
[The notion of a prince, torn down and built up again, is the story of the last arc.]

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it all on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss;
[Episodes 11 and 12.]
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on!"
[Episode 39.]

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue, [I would if I had nipples!]
Or walk with kings--nor lose the common touch, [Wakaba is actually frustrated by Utena's success in this, I think.]
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you; [Stab me in the back?  I open your coffin!]
If all men count with you, but none too much, [Actually, I do worry about codependence in Utena's future.]
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And--which is more--you'll be a Man, my son! [That's "Prince," Rudyard.]

Re: Poetry that fits Utena

For Utena at the end of the series...probs one of my fav poems.

Invictus

OUT of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
  For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance             5
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,      10
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate:      15
I am the captain of my soul.

"You said you would do anything for me, right Mamiya?" Mikage purred as he slithered close. "Yes that's right" Mamiya said with a rosey blush. Mikage's smile was evil and cinister as he reached into his pocket and pulled out a banana. "Eeny meeny myny moo. I wonder where my banana will go?" - The Forbidden Passions of Nemuro

Re: Poetry that fits Utena

I found a poem moments ago, and Google is being wildly unhelpful in telling me the original writer. So many websites have it, yet not a single one lists the author!

Regardless, it reminds me of Juri and Shiori in many ways.

Seven Blackbirds

Seven blackbirds in a tree
Count them and see what they be
One for sorrow
Two for joy
Three for a girl
Four for a boy
Five for silver
Six for gold
Seven for a secret
That’s never been told.

ah, man does not exist; ah, within the darkness; ah, the sound of the waves
