This is a static copy of In the Rose Garden, which existed as the center of the western Utena fandom for years. Enjoy. :)
I saw three minutes of the English dub. That was more than enough for me.

Me, too. Aughhhh. I watched a bit from the movie, where Utena chased Anthy and kept screaming "HimeMIya!". So. Goddarn. Irritating. Pronouncing aside, the voice actors are horrid. Miki sounds 40. Shiori was the only decent one, even though she sounded way too bitchy.

You know, every bad guy needs someone to stick up for them, and in a sense, the English dub is like a 'bad guy'. So I'm here to stand up for it. Honestly, honestly, honestly, I don't think the dub is bad. Yes, some names are misprounced, and some voices were a bit off, but all in all, it's a hell of a lot better than most dubs. I saw SKU in English the first time I watched it, so I guess I'll never really have a problem. I mean, yeah, I prefer the Japanese version, but...I don't know. I've seen a thousand times worse. Like I've said before, there are some voices I think were better in the dub. I will always stand by my opinion that Shiori sounded much more like I thought she should in the dub. Her Japanese had the innocent, but her English had the cruel. And I just always pictured that voice to work for her more. I also think Mikage's voice was very...unique I guess. But it just sounded right for him. I've always thought he was better in the dub. So there, I guess...that didn't really say a lot, but...
JUST WATCH SAILOR MOON IN ENGLISH. Then you'll understand what it truly means to fuck something up royally.

I only discovered Utena through the English dub. I liked one of the VAs and wanted to see more of his work...

Oh God yes. Ami with that... what sort of accent was that? Was she trying to be British? I don't get it...

Now, now, we can't fault you for what you were exposed to. I discovered Utena because of the famous "Hit me Baby One More Time" AMV.
And no, I've never admitted that before.

I love that music video. I saw it before I had seen the entire series, and I didn't know what the hell was going on.

Its Naru's err Molly's voice, you know that redheaded friend of Usagi err Serena, now that voice was fucked up, If I knew someone who actually sounded like that, I would be contantly wishing that she would just STFU>

Very true, very true. Naru, ahem, Molly, was quite annoying.
But I'll never forgive them for "Amara" and "Michelle."
Edited to correct my statement in my last post. I only saw two minutes, and it was here. http://youtube.com/watch?v=inzC9Ej_k6o

Oh you mean the 'cousins'? Its funny how on one hand, treating gays and lesbians as equals is PC but when it comes to kids TV, suddenly its kept hush hush like its gonna corrupt the kiddies and turn them all queer if even a suggestion that there are gays or lesbians around.
Maybe Utena was right all along in that fan dub when she said "Gays don't exist'

Yeah, you're probably right.

No voice was ever worse that Usagi's. EVER. I could have thrown up all over everything. Especially in the laterish episodes, the ones with Hotaru. When I heard her voice sounded way different, I was so happy. I never thought they'd make it worse
And the 'cousins' thing just sent me into fits of rage/giggles. It was just so stupid.

I've been told that the dub's scriptwriters were lazy and actually translated all innuendo as it is, while continuously referring to them as cousins. Result? Not just a lesbian couple, but an incestuous lesbian couple.

Which makes so much sense!!!

I'm not a big dub hater. I adore dubs like Pokemon. But Sailor Moon...mainly Usagi's voice. Made me hate her.

I dunno about Amara, but I think Michiru--->Michelle = stroke of genuis. Much better than a badly pronounced Michiro anyway.

There is at least one clever aspect to the English dub of Sailor Moon (whenever it was intentional or not is another question) but Serena is a pretty suitable name for her as she was originally Princess Serenity and the dub name for Chibi-Usa which was Rini was clever as well because not only was it a veriation on the name Serena, in Japanese the name Rini = small rabbit, which fits in with Usagi's name quite well.

Hmm, I actually thought her voice fit her in the first and second seasons on the dub - her later dub voice was pretty bad, though. Actually, Takeuchi-san mainly liked Usagi's original dub voice, curiously enough - although she felt it was a bit on the low side.
Of course, I can't stand Usagi's original voice, so perhaps I'm biased - the only time I liked it was when her seiyuu sang any of Usagi's image songs, and then it was only because it wasn't nearly as high. High voices just really get on my nerves.
And, actually, speaking of name changes in Sailor Moon, even though the DiC dub was horrendous, I'm surprised at how much some of the names were maintained - we just had spelling changes for Rei and Amy, and a shortening for Minako. As for secondary characters, many of the villains had no name changes at all. All this in retrospect surprises me.
Anyway, honestly, not even the Sailor Moon DiC dub can beat out CardCaptor Sakura for the worst dub in the modern anime-in-America era - it is almost funny how stupendously horrid that dub was.

Lightice - Exactly!
YamPuff - I was talking about the incest thing not the name thing. Michelle is about as good an Anglicized name as one could expect to derive from Michiru.

I know one character change in the dub that I know was done for the wrong reason but I still like it none the less.
Zoicite
I know that the reason they changed Zoicite from a guy to a girl was because he looked like one and that they couldn't deal with the idea of a homosexual couple but despite that, I liked the idea of a female Zoicite mainly cos i thought she was hot in a tomboyish sort of way (I wasn't aware of Zoi's original gender at the time) so in a way, Zoicite is the reverse of me expect that instead of nature performing the change, it was the US networks who forced the change.
Offline
EXACTLY. Oh my god, I could overlook the horrible voices and some lame name changes, but I will never be able to get over changing Zoicite's gender. WTF. Even worse than incestuous cousins!
Offline
I didn't know Zoicite was in SKU
Isn't there a thread for this in General?

Sorry Yasha.
*cough* So, back on topic. I wouldn't say I really hate it, but it always bothered me that for the Black Rose arc, they randomly got rid of A-Ko and B-Ko, and instead had C-Ko. But then, in the Akio arc and Apocalypse arc, C-Ko would sometimes show up on A-Ko and B-Ko's wall. It just seemed so random and pointless. I don't know, it's one of those weird OCDish kinda things that bothers me for really no reason at all.
Offline
I've always liked C-Ko. My first time through the series, I just wanted A-Ko and B-Ko to come back, but now I think I might actually prefer her. As A-Ko and B-Ko said, she's a little weird, but she must be a very talented actress to play so many different roles. It's actually quite suiting for the Black Rose Saga, in the sense of her having different personalities. For the Black Rose Duelists, they're never as they first appear. They always have some sort of hidden personality trait or hatred for someone else.
I don't like Chu-Chu. On a different SKU forum that I was skimming through, everyone chose Chu-Chu as their favorite character. I just don't get it. Out of all the thought-provoking characters in this series, what's so great about the only character that has no purpose whatsoever, other than the occasional symbol? At least in the manga he had a bit of a personality, so that I could understand. Technically he's just a mascot, but in SKU, I would have hoped that even the mascot would be thought-provoking.
Maybe it's just because I don't like monkies. I don't know why, but primates have never captured my interest.
Offline
I don't dislike C-Ko, I just never understood that little change. While C-Ko does indeed work out better for the Black Rose duelists, I just didn't see a point in her appearing with A-Ko and B-Ko at random times.
Chu-Chu has done nothing worthy of making him a favorite character, IMO. I don't like rats or mice, and I don't like monkeys. I also don't like children, mustard, Grey's Anatomy, and the color blue. But I try not to hold any of those biases against anything either. It's difficult.

It's pretty much expectable, considering the three arcs. It has a clear rythm - first two, then one and finally all three together. And C-ko's appearances aren't random, any more than the shadowplays themselves are random. They always make a some sort of point.

Alright, I'll just repeat what I said at first: It's just sort of OCD-ish I suppose. I know that in SKU, there is hardly anything that happens without reasoning. But I already said, I don't know why the Shadow Girls thing bothers me, it just does. There is no reasoning behind it. So there isn't much of a point in trying to make me see it in a different light, because it isn't seen in any light to begin with. It's just always going to be something that bothers me.

Gio's gonna be all up on me and "Grrr..." But I despise Akio's design. Sexiest man in the show? Check. Give him a mullet? Check! Give him a horribly flamboyant KY cowboy shirt? Check! And a purple tie that Queer Eye Carson would be thrilled with? Check!
... Srsly, Ikuhara, wtf with yo' caaaaaaaaaaaaaa-ray-zy shiznet?
And this is such a stupid stupid thing, but it drives me crazy how long Utena's nails are -COME ON. She's a tomboy! I don't know any tomboy's with nails that long.
