This is a static copy of In the Rose Garden, which existed as the center of the western Utena fandom for years. Enjoy. :)
Anyone got any? Please, do share
A couple of months ago I stumbled upon the most perfect cel of my beloved Anthy on eBay and was too weak to resist the temptation. I'm no collector and I don't plan on buying any more, though.
(I could scan it myself if someone wants me to )
Episode screencap of it
Now, while I'm at it, there's a problem I'm having. Since I already spent a stupid amount of money on it, I don't want to leave it hidden away somewhere, but frame it. The problem is, it didn't come with the matching background. And this red one just doesn't look right.
Anyone have an idea what to do now?

I think in this case, a white bacground will work given that's mainly the background color from the actual episode. Plus, white should be fairly easy to come up with.

I would love to buy a cell of Shiori, but I would rather it be one of her where she is wearing clothes and there aren't wings coming out of her back. Unfortunately, that's all I can seem to find.

I wonder why there are so few Akio cels? I've only seen the one with him and Utena.
Also, I want this cel!
Btw, here are some Shioris with clothes on

Yeah, that thought crossed my mind as well...

I never noticed that before, but now that you mention it, you're right! I've only seen that one as well. Odd.

Ah, the elusive Akio cel. The stuff of Gio's dreams. Aside from the one pictured (which I believe Yasha has now), I've only ever seen two.
This one was on a cel site for $550 dollars. I was so, OH so close to buying it, but frankly it was too expensive at the time, I was building the gallery and putting all my cash into that. It was the cell or get the CD-ROM galleries. Remember what I was saying about duplicate shots in the series? There's an identical shot of Dios right at the beginning of the 'real' flashback in episode 34.

This one...ah...this one was the one I wanted. Needed. Would have given limbs for. It was up on eBay, and I won the auction at something like $350. (This was much later, the demand wasn't so high for SKU merchandise, you hardly ever even saw cels on eBay anymore.) However, when I paid for it, the seller refused the paypal and said the price had not gone up to what she felt was a fair amount for the cel, she'd been looking for 450-550. I cringed and offered to buy it for 450 if she'd give me a month to grab up the extra cash (I was broke to an extreme at the time, and honestly had no business whatsoever buying the damn thing) but she refused and put it back on eBay. It sold for 400 the next time and I never saw it again.
COME BACK TO ME, MY LOVE
I should note that the only character who consistently sold for more was Touga. But there were quite a number of cels of him, so if you didn't have 700bux that week, next week there'd be another one.
Edit: Oh, and I've seen cels of movie Akio. MORE OF THEM THAN SERIES AKIO.

Wow, that's awful! I feel so bad for you. (BTW, you do know that you likely could've gotten the seller kicked off eBay for this, right?)
Funny piece of trivia. Did you know that in Britain, there is actually a word for demanding that the winner of an auction pay more money than they bid? And it's the best word ever. It's called "gazumping." You got gazumped.

When I first started watching Utena, I only had up to episode 17 and the movie. I bought the rest of the series off of eBay, completely unaware that what I was buying wasn't what I thought it was. The person sent me a fansub on two disks. As if that wasn't bad enough, she tried to charge us extra so that she could convert it to DVD format, and sent it to us in computer format when we refused. Didn't she read the FBI warning?
I was stupid enough to use eBay a second time. My second favorite episode, episode 26, doesn't work properly, so I'm going to have to buy a new one eventually... But not from eBay.

Yeah, I know. I was hoping to stay on her good(er) side to get the cel.
OH SHIT. OH. SHIT.
I NEED THIS.

Sweet jesus the whole lot of them are up. http://page11.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/n25688054
I don't want this one, but I bet some of you do. I'd grab if I were you, the Juri ones are rare as hell. http://page5.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/e59900316
One of you Japanese readers, tell me what this is. I don't believe I've scanned it. http://page2.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/b70913208
Also FUCK, Shounen Ou is there!! http://page4.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/d64703862
Why did I do this. I'd with the lights on if I had all those, good lord almighty I hate being broke
Sigh. If any of you are interested in owning these, I'd grab them. The threesome pic is very rare, and it's unheard of anymore for this many posters to be up at once.

eBay seems scary. o.O I don't think I'd buy much from there even if I could.

That is a pretty one.... *claps with blank stare* Kind of Edgar Allen Poe, eh? The raven and the huge chair is a dead giveaway.

That one says it's a collection of character sketches used by the staff who actually drew the animation.

CRAP. It's different from the one in the gallery. I may be missing something.
Yasha, we both seriously need more Utena squashed threesome poster in our lives.

Um... yeah. Of course we do. If you want, I'll try and pick them up.

*sighs* It's times like this when I curse not having plastic.

I'll risk sounding like a complete idiot and ask - what is a cel, and why on earth does it cost so much?
Offline
I'm not totally sure what it is either, but it appears to be the orginial artwork used in the animations.
As for why it costs so much, I have absolutely no idea. You have to be rather rich to get one. You can buy so much with that money

Animation cels are the result of traditional animation, where several drawings are sequenced, each with a slightly different change of position, to create the illusion of movement. Every little motion a character makes in SKU has a cel that goes with it, so there are actually thousands of cels, but only a few per series ever make it to the fans. Ikuhara's probably sitting on the cels of our dreams. Jerk.
I believe the vast majority of anime is computer animated these days, so cels are a thing of the past. They demand such a high price because you literally own a piece of the series. A cel of Touga smirking is the exact piece of work that went into the smirk you saw on your TV/whatever.
I personally would kill babies to have the production cels of actual series artwork. Like this.

There is no such thing as a stupid question!
In traditional animation each frame is drawn by hand. So every move a character makes must first be drawn on a transparent sheet (aka cel, short for celluloid), placed on a nice background and filmed.
Oh I give up, I suck at explaining stuff.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cel
Of course, not all cels are expensive. I've seen cels from less popular shows/cels of minor characters selling for like 2$ But cels from, say, Miyazaki or Disney's movies tend to reach insanely high prices. Currently some Porco Rosso cels are on ebay for $1,250, and a Little Mermaid cel for $2,495. Oh, and a cel from Who Framed Roger Rabbit sold for $50,600 at Sotheby's in 1989.
I'm a big fan of traditional animation and it makes me sad to see it becoming rare.

Thank you both [lovely explanation there, Iruka, with the pictures]. I... would really want one if they weren't expensive as hell. D:

Actually, from what I know, no company in Japan actually does make cels anymore. Unless they went back to their old ways...
"I recall thinking at one time that I wasn't very particular about some newer anime titles which depended (in my opinion) too heavily on computers. It seemed to get more and more common until I eventually read the headline: "No more cells will be made in Japan". If you don't know; a cell is the original art on which a frame for anime is drawn. Artists typically draw out a character, or scene on a cell, and it is captured on a frame for film. Showing these in succession gives birth to animation. That's how it used to be anyway, but that all changed. It seems that Fuji, which was the last company still making animation cells in Japan; decided to stop producing them - being that the high quality paper pulp required to make them was extremely expensive." --- CG Anime by Archen.
I believe this artical was made back in 2001 or 2002.

As I understand, some studios still make limited numbers of cels for the sole purpose of selling them to fans. Don't quote me on this, though.
