This is a static copy of In the Rose Garden, which existed as the center of the western Utena fandom for years. Enjoy. :)

[Revolutionary Puzzle] Fairy Tales

Fairy Tales

A girl is swept up into a surreal world where she meets, among others, a purple-haired character with a deceptive smile, a character who is obsessed with his watch, and an antagonist who likes red roses.

A girl who cannot be a princess has no choice but to become a witch.  She is saved by another girl's all-forgiving love.

A hero bereaved by death in the family must duel to secure the love interest on the way to becoming a prince.

In spite of pressure to conform to gender norms, a girl dresses up as a boy and fights to protect someone dear to her.

A charismatic villain seeks to marry his way into a powerful family.  His plans are thwarted by a heroic orphan, a magic-user with fickle allegiances, and a pet monkey.

A magic sword that contains the power of a hero seems to be the way to stop the bad guy, but in the end the sword is taken.  Instead, it's an act of self-sacrifice that destroys the villain and his sanctuary.

A-KO & B-KO: I wonder!  I wonder!  I wonder if you know!
B-KO: Mommy, read me a story!
A-KO: All right, all right!  Once upon a time, many years ago, there was a beautiful princess...
B-KO: Mom, this is the same story you read me last night!
A-KO: It is?  The title isn't the same...
B-KO: But last night's story had a princess too!
A-KO: Oh, sweetheart.  Most new fairy tales are just old ones with a slant.
B-KO: Can you skip the other parts and only read the slant?
A-KO: Is that even allowed?...
B-KO: (Do you think we were too subtle?)
A-KO: (Your guess is as good as mine.)

Re: [Revolutionary Puzzle] Fairy Tales

Okay, I think I see how this one works. I have to commend the amount of work and mental gymnastics it must take to think these puzzles up.

So, clearly, the first one has nothing to do with Miki and everything to do with Alice in Wonderland.

Now to figure out the others...

Re: [Revolutionary Puzzle] Fairy Tales

Puella Magi Madoka Magica for the second one, perhaps?

Mulan for the fourth?

And Aladdin for the fifth?

Just stabbing here...

(Three guesses so far are Disney movies, so PMMM doesn't fit...hmmm)

Edit: Ah, Frozen for the second one! What was I thinking...

Re: [Revolutionary Puzzle] Fairy Tales

I've got:

Alice in Wonderland

Frozen

Lion King

Mulan

Aladdin

but that sixth one is stumping my puny little brain. emot-mad

Re: [Revolutionary Puzzle] Fairy Tales

Well, if the theme is Disney movies, then the closest possibility for the last one would be The Sword in the Stone, unless we've got a better idea.

EDIT: Nix that. Looking at the plot synopsis, that's way off target.

EDIT AGAIN: Decided to read other plot synopses. It's gotta be The Black Cauldron.

Re: [Revolutionary Puzzle] Fairy Tales

I'm trying to imagine what might be needed to round these all together into one answer, considering the additional steps in Soul Swords, and hoping that I'm not overthinking this. What I've come up with:

Titles (obvously): Alice in Wonderland, Frozen, The Lion King, Mulan, Aladdin, The Black Cauldron
Original Authors: Lewis Carroll, Hans Christian Andersen, William Shakespeare (or Tezuka Osamu if you're feeling cynical), Guo Maoqian (though the original author's name is lost to time), Antoine Galland or Scheherazade (depending on which source you look at), and Lloyd Alexander
Original Title: Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, The Snow Queen, Hamlet (or Kimba the White Lion), The Ballad of Hua Mulan, Aladdin (like Hell I'm spelling that out in Arabic; my keyboard wouldn't be able to handle it), The Chronicles of Prydain
The Subject (as gleaned from the description): Alice, Ella, Simba, Hua Mulan, Jafar, The King's Sword or the Horned King (that one feels open to interpretation)

So, in conclusion... I have no freakin' idea.

I like the way you think!  etc-love  But you don't have to go that far.  You have the titles -- five of them, anyway.  The Shadow Girls may have more wisdom for you. emot-smile

Re: [Revolutionary Puzzle] Fairy Tales

Might be in the letters. As in, we cross letters that repeat in all the titles and single out only those that don't emot-confused

Re: [Revolutionary Puzzle] Fairy Tales

Oh snap! It's not The Lion King! It's Bambi!

So, what we have is...

Alice in Wonderland
Frozen
Bambi
Mulan
Aladdin
The Black Cauldron

As for the clue... I did kind of think the use of the word "slant" seemed a bit out of place...

I won't say the answer, just so someone else has a chance to work it out. And so I won't look stupid if I turn out to be wrong. My confidence in what it is may be fleeting, but I'll bask in it while it lasts.

I'm about to post the third puzzle, so you might as well shout it out!  Your choice of words makes me think you've got it. emot-wink

Re: [Revolutionary Puzzle] Fairy Tales

Very well. Though the band name has become more of a mouthful since they first started out.

Rod Torfulson's Armada featuring Howard Menderchuk!

The weird things you remember sometimes...

Re: [Revolutionary Puzzle] Fairy Tales

Ding ding!  ARMADA is the answer to this puzzle.  Fortunately, Flah spotted how to "only read the slant:"

Code:

Aliceinwonderland
fRozen
baMbi
mulAn
aladDin
theblAckcauldron

Congrats!  Onward and upward!
