I was reading on mugglenet somewhere about an interview JK did about the final book and debunking rumors. She was firm in saying that Dumbledore was definitly dead, never coming back, not as a ghost etc. However she did illude to Sirius . . . Something on the lines of "Sirius on the other hand . . ."

I never thought Sirius was dead anyways, I mean an Arch? I'll give you a Death Arch, but come on! What a lousy way to buy the farm!!

----12:01 AM Eastern Daylight Time----

If you're reading this thread and hoping not to encounter Book 7 spoilers, that stops here.  Harry Potter 7 was officially released on the East Coast of the U.S. seconds ago.  Anyone who hasn't read the book, plans to, and doesn't want to be told how it ends should leave now!

So, bye!

Re: HARRY POTTER DISCUSSION THREAD HERE!!!

I just got back from the midnight release party!!!! Woohoo! It’s 759 pages long! Some crazy things happened in line - like some kids singing the Potter puppets song. (all right, I did join) I caught it all on videotape and got some good B&W photos too. emot-dance

Thanks for the compliments about that dopey stunt I pulled, you guys! Lady N, no amount of gorgeous can compare to those boobs of yours. etc-love

Tama, the method? I put on enough make-up to pass as a downtown prostitute, and tolerated everyone in the crowded DMV sitting at least 3 spaces away from me…

I asked the DMV Demon to get the tie in to commemorate the HP release. She frowned at me and said it only captures your face. It came out anyway! emot-rofl

OK, now I'm off to finish the book. Not looking into this thread before I’m done! Some ass wipe read the last two pages standing in front of me and began to open his mouth, I nearly punched him in the face! But I got to my car safely without spoilers. Yaaaaaaaaaaay! emot-keke

I... am not sure how I feel about it yet. I liked it, don't get me wrong, but... I... need some time, I think.

I really wonder though, if Rowling will ever be able to write anything else.

I was only half-wrong, actually. I really, really enjoyed this book, even though a lot of people died. I wasn't really torn up about it, and I don't really think a lot of people will be. There was only one character that died that I cried for. :|

Re: HARRY POTTER DISCUSSION THREAD HERE!!!

I've followed this story since I was a teenager, and here are my final thoughts, about the ending...

SPOILER'S ABOUT EVERY SECRET, DO NOT HIGHLIGHT UNLESS YOU HAVE ALREADY READ

A note about the death's of characters, did anyone get the feeling JK was having a little fun with us during the beginning of the book, like 500 pages worth? EVERYONE was having close calls! I was gripping the book over Hagrid (one of my personal favs).. then, you wondered over the deaths, if they really counted or not into Rowling's "two main characters will die" confession.

I really thought McGonagall was going to take over as Headmaster. (I loved the part when Harry takes the risk of being exposed to defend her) When Snape didn't get alot of action in the first 600 or so pages, I was beginning to wonder if JK was pulling a stunt - she usually makes us wait for the ending to reveal all schemes, but this was getting terrifying waiting to see if he would really be off the hook.

So the most gripping element of the book for me, was of course, the revealing Snape chapter - where we see his humanity shine though after all the many books and adventures of being so misunderstood, he was redeemed! I did not cry, as when Dumbledore died, but when watching Snape's memories - I realized the significance of Snape telling Harry "look...at..me" and I reread that part, with the new information that he wanted to look into those familiar eyes one last time. OHGOD!!!! ;_______;

It was so awesome to see Rowling write exactly the words that fans have been screeching since the last book was over, the EXACT same sentence: Dumbledore was pleading for Snape to kill him because he wanted to protect Draco Malfoy from becoming a murderer. I was like, “GO FANS, you understand your author. I wish I could understand Ikuhara!” XD

When I read that the last bit of Horacrux was within Harry, I nearly FAINTED. I was so horrified that I had misjudged Dumbledore so wrongly, and he was really this unfeeling bastard shipping Harry off to slaughter...

of course, that was taken care of rather quickly. Once I reached that part of the book, I no longer took any more reading breaks - it was ALL spend staring at the pages. I like the way Dumbledore was the most forthcoming with Harry during that period of revelation, between life and death, but I wish that Dumbledore would have explicitly told Harry he loved him...which was a fear that had been eating away at Harry, that he didn't KNOW if Dumbledore really loved him or not. Dumbledore's willingness to tell him every bit of the truth, was the equivalent to confirming his love for Harry - as that is what made Harry doubt him, the half-truths. It was a perfect way to reunite with Dumbledore and still have his character remain dead.

All in all there was more ACTION than characterization in this last book, though Ron & Hermione’s fighting was hilarious. She shrills, "Broken fingernails, Harry! That really puts our sufferings into perspective!" Dobby's last stand was really touching "reflecting the stars in his eyes that he could no longer see". ;__; Oh, oh, and the really fun part I noticed, speaking of Harry/Draco slash - there's the scene where Draco's riding on the back of Harry's broomstick. I thought to myself *DAMN* Ahahaha! Gonna be nice fodder for fanfiction. Although the ending of the book really crushed my HARMONY hopes, I thought it was a nice touch to have the one son Albus also share the name of Snape. SO touching!

I wonder what fan reaction is going to be about the last chapter... It was a nice touch, because the ending of the book was just action, Action, ACTION, and then boom - over! I kind of wanted to see some reactions from the rest of the cast, the ones who would not really be there in the last chapter. It was really essential to have something come after that segment. I was expecting anything but what I actually saw on the pages - that 19 years had passed! At least we know Hogwarts, the institution, survived the attack!

Now that there are those little ones running around, it seems like JK might have known her fan community was full of the fiction and wanted to leave some open doors for her fans (as she said she is FINISHED with Potter novels)...OR, do you think she put the little ones onto the pages so that she herself could write more stories? They wouldn't be Potter stories, in the strictest sense of the word. Well, it was an amazing story. Like I said, I wish there had been MORE coverage of the aftermath of the battle with Voldemort, but that is because I just didn't really want to see the story end. Ever. But...

It WAS excellent, I am not disappointed.

Re: HARRY POTTER DISCUSSION THREAD HERE!!!

Just finished, having read straight through from 2:00 PM to 4:00 AM.  The first thing I have to say is:

emot-dance emot-dance emot-dance WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! emot-dance emot-dance emot-dance

Because... well... THOROUGH SPOILERS INCLUDING WHAT I BELIEVE TO BE A COMPLETE LIST OF EVERYONE WHO DIES!

It was a happy ending.  I really didn't think Harry would survive -- though in a way, we were all right about that, weren't we? -- and getting to the last page with Harry, Ron, Hermione, and Ginny all alive and well and having babies was... smashing.  I hope Luna's doing all right... and Neville deserves a mention, after the part he played, if you're going to have an epilogue anyway... but I can understand Rowling not wanting to distract from the beauty of the very simple scene at Platform 9 3/4.

Random, disjointed thoughts:

I have an ex-girlfriend named Ariana.  Her story isn't metaphorically dissimilar from Harry's Ariana; fortunately,
mine didn't kill her mother and is quite alive.

In the scene in the Ministry dungeons, when it talks about how Umbridge's Patronus was holding back the dementors, I momentarily wondered what form it took (quite forgetting that I'd been informed earlier in the paragraph), and automatically thought "golden monkey."  Bonus points if you get that one...

I didn't cry as much as I expected.  Hedwig's death was sort of random.  Moody didn't really faze me, since that isn't the Moody we know from Book 4.  Lupin and Tonks were sad, but not overwhelmingly; what I liked about Lupin's death was that he went from wanting to fight Voldemort to duck his responsibility to his son to wanting to fight Voldemort to protect his son.  Fred's death seemed unfair, and definitely made me stop reading for a moment... but I'm happy that it gave Percy a chance to complete his development arc.  Snape -- wow.  Never in a million years would I have guessed that he'd die that way, for that reason, but somehow it seems appropriate; he died deceiving Voldemort, in ignominy befitting his tragic character.  I didn't catch the significance of his last words till I read Frosty's post above, and that made me cry.  The only character that I teared up over was Dobby.  C'mon.  Not even Harry has a purer heart than Dobby.  :'(

Oh, and of course I cheered like everyone else when Scrimgeour died, and when each Death Eater bit the dust, and at the end.  Fucking Voldemort.

Just about the only person who didn't get what was comin' to 'em was Umbridge.  YET MY DESIRE TO KILL HER IS UNABATED.  Someone write a nice, convincing fanfic, please?  (I can sort of hear Rowling saying: She just wouldn't die.  I wanted her to die, but I couldn't make her die.)

Oddly, I think of all the characters this time around, the one who got the most characterization was Narcissa Malfoy.  Her son persists in moral ambiguity, but Narcissa is redeemed; love drove her to the right choice in the end, and that's all that's required for redemption in Harry's universe.  Also, I love the image of her weaving through the climactic duels -- a Death Eater in Hogwarts -- passing untouched and nearly unnoticed because she doesn't seek to harm.

I wonder what became of the goblin.  I don't really care; I just wonder.

I wonder what became of the Dursleys.  I care about them more than the goblin... especially Dudley.

I liked it when Dumbledore told Snape in the latter's memories that Harry's inner nature was closer to Lily's than James's.  Even Dumbledore thinks James was an asshole!

I'm sure there's more, but I'm exhausted.  Catch ya later!
