This is a static copy of In the Rose Garden, which existed as the center of the western Utena fandom for years. Enjoy. :)
SO. The musical premiered yesterday.
It will be available at the end of the month on a streaming service in Japan that is region locked. But funny thing about that....is I will be in Japan at the time.
In July, a DVD will be released for it, that I will obviously be preordering at the show and acquiring.
Right now, I have an audio recording. At the end of the month I will have....a copy, but given the limitations of wifi and that my laptop is not an optimal climate for ripping streams, probably not a great one, and in July I will have the DVD. Which means you know...like, all of us have this stuff.
What's the interest level in translating it? The audio I have is actually very good and could probably be used to get a loose script off, given there may be minor variations based on slipped dialogue or such vs the copy of the stream that'll end up on the DVD. The content is very loyal to the first arc, with a framing device where child Touga and Saionji control shadow figures that include Shiori, Ruka, Kozue, and Akio. (Apparently it's heavily implied they're operating a machine. One that's...above them. I wonder...) The language is simple, and when it's not, it's close enough to the source that I can follow pretty well who is who and what's going on. Especially Nanami, who fucking crushes her part holy shit.
So here's an mp3 of the audio, it's 2 hours, 60mb.
Aaaand
I'll start! Here's a translation of Nanami's first song:
I'm Kiryuu Nanami
Touga's sister
I'm the best
He's the best
You all suck
HOW DID I DO
PS: The last manga installment (apparently) is releasing at the beginning of April, features Miki and Kozue, and obvs I've already pre-ordered, so there's that.

I'm up for translation and subtitling! I just can't decipher everything from the audio. A transcription would help. I can start one (perhaps on a googledocs like we did for the manga) but it won't be complete.

It was beautiful. The stage design captured the feeling of Utena perfectly. Despite being live action, the sound and light designers did a wonderful job in capturing moments that seem to only be possible with animation. It captured the playfulness of the anime perfectly.
Not just the fun was portrayed, but the small theatre size made tge emotions feel personal. Everyone suddenly singing "Zettai Unmei" easily gave chills. Also the beautiful Nanami walked right by me in her entrance
As a two hour play, the first few minutes felt a bit like a rushed retelling of the anime's introduction, but musicals excel at portraying stories that need to span time. Through clever use of blocking and cross-talk, they were able to tell the story in a decidely un-rushed way. This also allowed it to strengthen certain themes by portraying them together. By the end, the play established that it is its own entity, and not just a retelling.
Shadow Girls A-ko and B-ko were the unsung heroes. They and their male counterparts were the glue that kept the reality of the world together and gave it weight. I'm just upset I couldn't buy goods of them (NENE is pretty damn cute).
I have a new actress to follow with Suzuki Arisa. Her Nanami and song captured all the fun of the anime's Nanami episodes.
Wakaba was so on point to the anime that I was getting uncanny valley feelings despite her being a human.
Yamauchi Yuka did an amazing job at humanizing the stoic Anthy. Her singing voice was a highlight as well.
Saionji was played by an extremely talented actor. I was very impressed.
When I first looked up the cast, I almost dismissed Nojo Ami as a common idol, but she was so endearing as Utena, that I went back to buy her photos in the goods line after the show.
Anyway, yeah, it was good.

Apparently Yokoi ad libs what Saionji does to kill time when the castle won't come down for him. Opening night he took a leak, today he did this insane Santa bit after trying screaming GIVE ME ETERNITY from different spots on the stage.
Saionji is the hero of the musical. Fight me.
PS. So the Blu-ray is 100 dollars rofl. And there's apparently no limit on how many teacups you can buy. So uh...that might be a thing.
PPS. The musical releases July 18th, and includes the musical, plus another disc that's going to include a making of piece.

Yes! He was great. He pointed at the spotlight illuminating the floor, "Ah, I must have to do it here. That's what this light is for right?" Then he did an elaborate mime of riding public transit and needing to charge his fare, so that he could make a pun with "sen en" and "eien".
The whole time Anthy is lying on the stage across from him giggling with the audience.
At the end of the show, in the cast's time to give their feelings about the performance, she made sure to bring it up and say how good his antics were today. And so they told us he changes it up every time, so look forward to it.
(And yes, bluray preordered)

Ad-libbing Saionji is the most exciting development in Utena since the character designs for Pazolini & co were released.
(there have also been some new manga chapters coming out i guess)

The file in the link above has changed, it is now for a different performance.
It's the Santa one. It's fucking hilarious, someone please at least translate this bit:
http://ohtori.nu/SaionjiSanta_Full.mp3
And for just the Ho ho and Jingle Bells:
http://ohtori.nu/SaionjiSanta.mp3
I can follow it pretty well but I don't know what he's asking Anthy before immediately getting mad that she's answering him, stuff like that. This is funny as hell without the translation but omgggg
This is absolutely the best thing since Pazolini.

oh my god y'all
So Touga does this little smirk during his Definitely Not A Runway bit, and the edited version of that will probably be on the Bluray cuts the shot off early because it shifts to the whole cast's dancing earlier.
This is sad and wrong.
Seriously, this guy plays Touga better than Touga plays Touga.

So I joined in on the stream of the Musical last night (I had to go to bed partway through), having not seen any of the musicals before. I don't speak Japanese at all, so I had no idea what they were saying/singing, but the visuals were super cool. Importantly, the commentary in the stream chat was top notch, so thank you all for being so hilarious and generous. Y'all are the bomb dot com.
