This is a static copy of In the Rose Garden, which existed as the center of the western Utena fandom for years. Enjoy. :)

Razara wrote:

My current gaming obsession is The Sims 2... I somehow managed to find a way to make my Utena obsession and The Sims obession come together as one by creating Utena sims of... Just about every single character. (Utena, Anthy, Juri, Shiori (of course,) Akio, Touga, Saionji, Miki, Nanami, Kozue, Wakaba, Kanae, Keiko, and Ruka.) I've put more hours than I can count into making them. I put 30 hours of failed attempts alone into Juri's hair before I managed to get it just right, and so by the time I finished I was about ready to kill her in sheer frustration. (Don't worry, I didn't.)

Anyone who has played any of The Sims games knows that the player is decides whether their sims live happily ever after, or suffer a fate worse than death shortly followed by death. So what's it like to have that kind of control over the lives of the character from Utena...?

Very, very fun.

I have a million stories about all the crazy things my Utena sims have done. Like the time Akio caught Anthy and Utena together on a date and decided to steal their newspaper for a week. (Actually, that happens a lot. Anthy and Utena can't keep their hands off each other for more than five minutes.) Or the time when Juri set the house on fire last week, scaring me half to death with the idea of seeing Shiori die. (Fires happen a lot... I swear, Kozue sets fires just to piss me off. And the very first thing that happened when I created Touga, Saionji, and Wakaba was that Touga set the house on fire, and Wakaba and Saionji were killed.) And just the other day, either caused by a glitch or something in the new expansion pack, Nanami and Juri started making out, despite having no history together, and they weren't even in love, just to piss Shiori off. (Fine! I hope they'll be very happy together! D:<)

Maybe I'll make a thread about my Utena sims when I get the chance. But there are so many stories that I can't possibly keep it a reasonable length. Oh, and I'll probably publish these sims so that other people can use them some time soon... But for now there are a few that are already made on thesims2.com.

Sims 2 is made of pure win. (Granted, my copies might or might not be arrpirated, but on that, I shall plead the FIF. emot-wink ) I managed to throw together a almost-perfect Morgendorffer family on nothing but default outfits and hairstyles and etc. I'd like to throw together an Utena house if I install it again, but that just SCREAMS custom content.

Although I wonder if someone's made an Akio Car for Sims 2, lol. emot-biggrin

ALRIGHT, ALRIGHT. Uncle, already. Someone tell me about this Maple Story. The last free MMORPGs I played were Ragnarok and ROSEOnline, both of which I got sick of after there being no community to speak of, since at any given moment about three people on the server spoke English. I can well enough guess the manner of gameplay for Maple Story, but how is the community? Do people group? Is there an economy? Is this the anime-fan MMORPG flavor of the month? TELL ME. emot-mad

Re: Games, yay!

Man, I feel so out of the loop. I was never a big gamer, admittedly, but the only thing I play now is The Sims 2 (which I am currently forbidden from playing, as when I start I finish...perhaps eight hours later, and I DO have to go to work at least five times a week...). I, however, was a child-whore to Maxis right from Sim City 2000. Stupid damn thing ate my life, along with Monkey Island, Indiana Jones and the Secret of Atlantis, Where In The World Is Carmen Sandiego? (both the original green-screen Apple version and the latter CD-ROM) and Loom. Pfft. As you can see, I like puzzle-solving games -- my other personal favourites were The Neverhood and Zork: Nemesis. Never got the appeal of Myst or Riven, although I am a slut for the soundtrack of the later.

Still, I think it says something about my status as an Eighties Baby in that if you were to give me an Atari with Asteroids even now, I would be content. Pixels less than the size of my little finger? Naaaaah. Who needs high definition pixellation, anyway? Bring on them asteroids, baby! emot-dance

P.S. I am also more vastly amused by my Sega MegaDrive emulator than most new gaming systems -- I mean, come ON. Michael Jackson's Moonwalker? Christ, how was I to know how absolutely HILARIOUSLY WRONG that game would become when I was only a whippersnapper of nine myself? Mwahahahahaha!

RO and Rose are free? Unless you were playing on private servers, I mean.

Hmm... how to describe Maple Story... think... Super Mario Bros. meets Everquest, and you'd basically have Maple. It's a free-to-play(with cash shop), 2-D MMORPG. If you don't mind the fact that you'll run into people cheating every so often, it's a pretty fun game. In fact, it's the MMO I play most right now -- more than Nostale and Rappelz.

There's a LARGE community for MS, what with at least two outside websites dedicated to the game(one being hidden-street.net, the other being sleepywood.net), several LJ communities, and even a webcomic based on the game(these days it's not SO based on it, but it was originally).

Of course, you can party; there's a limit of 6 people per party, but it can be quite fun, and there's XP/cash sharing. Watch out for leeches. Guilds also require 6 people to start, but you can add more later. It also costs about 1.5 million mesos(game currency) to start one, so it's pretty damned pricey.

And there is an economy; if you look in the free markets, you'll find almost anything you might need, provided you can pay for it. Or if you don't want to go that route, there's always basilmarket.com(which is sort of eBay for MS, lol) -- you can find stuff on there at cheaper prices than the free markets sometimes.

BTW, Maple's been out for more than a year. Actually about two, give or take a few months, if you count beta.

And that's it for the quickish lesson on Maple Story... school-eng101

RO vs MS
pros
-you got quests you can actually do
-less lag cause its 2D
-its free
-doesnt take long to dl
-no freaking weird patches

cons
-still get major spam in the chats
-plenty of cheating/ksing/and looting

and i think you played the private server of RO cause if you were playing the offical...you'd be laged to death if you entered prontera cause of major vendor alert...

and MS you actually have to press the action keys of jumping and attacking

just go to youtube and type in "maple story"

Re: Games, yay!

I own three gaming consoles (PS2, Saturn, DS) but rarely get to play because this semester is killing me and my boyfriend isn't much for new games (he's an Atari kind of guy).  My first console was a Genesis--in fact, the DS is my first-ever Nintendo console.

When I do get to play, here's some of the stuff I dig:

--Fighting games (Tekken, Soul Calibur, Virtua Fighter)
--the Final Fantasy series (PlayStation and PS2 games, with the exception of IX, Tactics and XI; I never played IX and never learned to play Tactics)
--the original Phantasy Star series for the old-school Sega consoles (IV, the first RPG I ever beat, is my favorite; I own the first three as Phantasy Star Collection for the GBA)
--Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney (aka Gyakuten Saiban, for the GBA/DS; cannot freaking wait for the translation/re-porting of the second installment!)
--Trauma Center (DS; fun but HARD!)
--Katamari Damacy (PS2; fun but gives me mad motion sickness if I play for too long)
--the Silent Hill series (PS/PS2)
--Disgaea (PS2; strategy RPGs aren't my thing, but this game is too hilarious not to try to play)
--Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (PS/Saturn; I own both versions)
--Magic Knight Rayearth (two of them: a fan-translated version for the Super Famicom which I play using an SNES emulator, and another for the Saturn--Working Designs version)
--Bishojo Senshi Sailor Moon: Another Story (another fan translation of a Super Famicom game which I play using an SNES emulator)
--SKU: Four Days in Ohtori (Saturn; wonderful way for me to practice my Japanese, as it's a choose-you-own-adventure type game and the dialogue is both spoken and written in text boxes)

Arcade-wise, I'm a sucker for Bemani games--DDR, Guitar Freaks and Dance Maniax in particular.  Of the three, I'm best at DDR, but that's not saying much.

Wow, flashback time.  My brother loved that game, though he'll probably never admit it now.  So wrong, yet so fun.  I can just hear the 16-bit synthesized version of "Smooth Criminal" now, which is also the level I remember best.

Ha, now I have the urge to go and play it. ^___^ Personally my favourite game was always some version of Sonic, but I had the softest spot for Ecco. Although all I did in that game was swim around and drown. A lot. emot-biggrin

I only played a little bit of Ecco on an emulator... for a game about a dolphin the end boss was pretty creepy.

AHhh ahahaha! You know it's never occured to me to think of that? But you're right, the inverted castle! (I like the music before it inverts better, though...) If Dios is sealed away in the inverted castle, and Dracula is sealed away in an inverted castle...THAN DIOS IS DRACULA. emot-aaa emot-aaa emot-aaa

Except Dracula is a lot hotter. If he'd can the facial hair I'd totally get into some kinky father-son vampire threesomes there.

Damn you now I'm itching to play it...I just loved giving Death his just desserts for stealing all my gear in the beginning. What a bastard. And the dream sequence was just MADE of win. (Succubus was so hot. So was Alucard's mom.)

I also totally cheat in that game. Go go Shield Rod. Which was your familiar of choice? I always used the sword, but had such fun letting the fairy sit on my shoulder, when you moved she'd fall off (lol spread eagle) and bitch.

Giovanna wrote:

And you call yourself a fan? school-devil

It helped that I first saw the inverted castle at about the time I first saw Utena, but shhh. I actually have a save just before fighting Richter so I can watch the castle show up when I'm feeling especially geeky. emot-redface

Dracula may be hotter than Dios, but Alucard is hotter than anything. etc-love (I wonder who voiced him in the Japanese version...?)

The problem with the music in the inverted castle is that they kept using the same song for every area. There's just no escaping from it. I wish they'd kept the same songs for every area instead of making one song sound staler and staler.

I liked having death steal my stuff, but I just like starting out with dick all and having to build up an arsenal over the course of the game. By the time you get to Death he's such a push over it's a little sad. I mean... he's DEATH!

The succubus is cool, I didn't expect her official game portrait to be porn. Very fitting though. And then there's the dark priest Shaft.

Shield rod isn't cheating, it's not our fault the developers put it in. How can we be blamed for playing the game as it was meant to be played?

I always used the sword familiar because, supposedly, if you get it to level 99 you can do some trick to fly through a wall and get an extra 10% of the map covered. I was never quite dedicated enough to go beyond level 60ish though. And I've never managed to get the proper non-glitch full map either. I always miss one room somewhere...

The bat familiar is fun to use, though, since the higher it goes the more show up when Alucard goes into his bat form and mates with it. The demon has the worst voice actor ever, so I only use him to open that one switch only he can figure out. And I always feel bad for knocking the fairy off (even if I've done it constantly.)

*Blinks.* Ok, time to stop typing.

For some reason the level of the deep caves scares the crap out of me -- where you take Ecco under the lagoon and find this really weird DNA-looking thing. First time I saw that, I thought my television had been possessed or something. O_o I also really disliked the ice levels, and I am not sure why...I think it's like was said earlier, getting a dolphin killed because you're a dumb ass just doesn't feel right. emot-biggrin

Why..I am a Square-Enix fan, and SQUARE BETTER NOT BE JUST MAKING A FF7 For PS3 trailer just to show the capabilities of it on PS3, STOP TEASING US DAG NAB IT!!!!!!

Also, I love the survival horror genre as well, with Fatal Frame and Resident Evil, and Silent Hill.
What else...you can usually find me playing the Inital D Arcade game in the Arcade as well as any of the fighting games such as Marvel Vs. Capcom 2, Capcom Vs. SNK Chaos(my favorite), and also Tekken 5.

Akio..and James Brown(R.I.P.) have two things in common:
1)They are sex machines...
2)They are the only ones that could possibly make jumping over the windshield of a car look effortless..

I'm sorry! emot-gonk What will it be? Fifty lashes? A night on the rack?

Also what's this Alucard mating with the bat? I don't remember this. You don't actually see Batcard humping away at his familiar do you? emot-gonk I DON'T REMEMBER THIS. I tried to get the sword to 99 too, but I gave up around 70. I've also managed to clear almost the whole map, but that very same mystical room still escapes.
