Death by Utena music...

I've been looking around the internet for titles of Evangelion songs, and have noticed that while we have the very nicely done Audiology for this site, they also have lists of what episode everything is played in and the like.

For some reason, I got jealous, and have decided to make similar lists for Utena. *beats head on desk*

This is mostly due to my obsessiveness over Utena music, and so many people I know asking to 'play the song from the episode where _____ does ____.'

...This is also me wanting to know if Picaresque (track 23 on OST 3) is really in the #$^&$ show.

...It isn't really that  painful, but I really do know the OSTs like the back of my hand... not that that really says much since they live hiding in braces, but I still live with them and give them much attention on many occasions.

Fun Fact: Unless I passed asleep during episode 8, (the curry high trip) there is no new music in there. Every other episode so far has had at least one new song, but not that one.

A few questions though--

Does anyone know a good way to put this onto a website? are there any non-hideous charts to make?

Can anyone tell what's playing during Touga's birthday flashback in episode 10? I swear I hear SOMETHING but its so low.... X___x

...Does Miki get royalties whenever they play the sunlit garden? I've done the first arc and its the most played song.

For discussion's sake, what is your favourite (non Akio Car / Nemuro Memorial Hall / duel theme) BGM?

...I myself like Duelists and To the Battle Castle, as well at the first half of Confessional Elevator- Daydreaming Troublesome Insects.

I also always associate Duelists with Saionji, for reasons unknown. Same goes for Miki and Sigh of the Rose.

[edit] I has no computers D: I reply slow. *kicks school library*

Bwahahaha. I started a project like this way back in the day and got to about episode 10. What I was doing was adding BGM notes into copies of the script. Seemed to me the best way to do it.

By the way this is an awesome idea. cool I wish I could find my old notes. emot-frown

Akio, you have nice turns of phrase, but your points aren't clear and you have no textual support. I can't give this a passing grade.

Re: Death by Utena music...

whenever I listen to fruit of the sin, I always start playing the bass line in my head making me get nothing done. TT__TT It would be on mine if it wasn't so distracting to me. >_<

I've been thinking having a clickable list of songs, tht lead to a (very) short description of what it is and where it is. Same for episodes, since its really the same thing, but just sorted differently. (It sounds painful when you really think about how many tracks there are, until I realise there are repeated tracks, and that I'm our friendly local Ruka and I'm too sick to actually go out and do anything else. X__x

...On a realted note, I've been watching in English, due to the fact that was the default language, and I'd start zoning out if I was listening to Japanese and the FREAKIN LOUD NOVELLAS from outside my door at the same time. (allegoriest = short attention span) I can't remember if the first few episodes had eyecatches, as they suddenly begin around five episodes in... I'm sure they'd show up in another copy, but does anyone else know?

During the Saionji / Touga duel in the opening of episode 9 with the cheering girls and the potential symbolism, there's just silence!! Its just KENDO DUELIN TIME sound effects music-y stuff.

...When Nanami gets after Utena for her supposed hitting on Touga in the Tsuwabuki episode, she goes "Well aren't we miss self sufficient USA?!"

...Touga also didn't send Saionji the fake letter in English... And Touga's voice on the phone telling her where to find Anthy was Saionji's O__o

Now I remember why I hate Touga... emot-mad

Oh! I remember non-American Utena fans talking about buying DVDs, and I'm pretty sure the movie and most of ther series are only region one discs, but the 'rose collection' discs (first arc) have no region coding and should work on any player.

Re: Death by Utena music...

Here's a large one which completely takes apart Utena's character in English, the line in Japanese goes "That ring will lead you back here one day." In English that line somehow get's to the point of the all revelating "that ring will lead you back here to save her one day." As she says this in Episode 37 and takes off the ring. It leads the English Watcher to believe that she has abandoned Anthy, yet knowing what she was isnce she recovered that memory. There's also a line in Episode 39 but Ican't remember it. As well the Ruka, Juri talk in the room with the chairs loses most of it's interpretation, as pointed out in the analysis of the scene. Not to mention Utena's line when Ruka first appears being askewed to what it should be is "He's slightly faster then Juri." Get's turned into.. "He's much faster... then her." That's alll I can think of for now.

We had someone who was willing to do map out the songs for us a while ago, but I haven't heard much from them about it. I don't have the time myself, or I'd do it.

Re: Death by Utena music...

I have lots of favorite songs in utena, but there are 2 that are favorites over favorites:

Legend (The God's Name Is Abraxas): The student council song, almost quoting Demian, it has such power, such apeal, i wish my student council meeting were like that (at least with the music).

Akio´s Car: the good old jazz tune, a sensual ryth, with the company of the sax, makes it a song that represents everything akio: manipulation, atraction, apeal, temptation and a little spice that can turn the right moment into "this is so bad , but it feels sooo good".

But still i enjoy a lot of tunes in utena like sunlit garden, rinbu revolution, absolute destiny apocalypse, almost all the duel song in the series.

Working on new signature, please wait

This is also me wanting to know if Picaresque (track 23 on OST 3) is really in the #$^&$ show.

YES IT IS!!!
I HAVE FIGURED IT OUT AFTER LISTENING TO ALL OF THE OSTS on that site!emot-dance

It's from...(drumroll)

Ok..Go to OST 1..mmmkay?

and listen to the 25. Dios he no Inori..mmmkay

What you hear..starting at 00:48 is basically a erm..what do black ppl call it....a "smoothed out" version of Picaresque!

So basically Picaresque..in theory..must be an extended remix of Dios he no Inori....
I'm just saying..
but then again..I use Picaresque and the Akio Car theme music whenever I am taking a date on a drive to the park at night..and they believe it to be some type of jazz music as well..heh..if they only knew what Akio Car theme music was really meant for.. etc-wankgirl etc-love etc-wankgirl

Akio..and James Brown(R.I.P.) have two things in common:
1)They are sex machines...
2)They are the only ones that could possibly make jumping over the windshield of a car look effortless..

Re: Death by Utena music...

but... then Fruit of the Sin and Poison would be counted as the same song. As would many others.... And to the best of my recollection, they haven't even played more than the first few seconds of Pray to Dios anyway. >_<

My little Miki aged sister gives her friends CDs of random songs she has to her non-Utena knowing friends and all their parents fall in love with the Akio Car song. It reminds mine of the pink panther......

And I can see why you stopped at episode ten. I just plain skipped that one, it made me fall asleep looking for music in it.....

...Also, I have several copies of the show, and they're all inconsistant eyecatch wise. O_o Some have some, others are missing, and I think some of mine are just plain missing the episode previews... (not just like episode 13... ones I KNOW I've seen on other discs....)

Re: Death by Utena music...

That's a hard on... all the OST's are good. But here's my top 10.

Well, I like the Overture...
you just can't help picturing the scene with Dona Dona
Rinbu Revolution doesn't get old
and Virtual Star Hasseigaku has the same quality
Sekai wo Kakumei Suru Tame ni is a good listen
Poison is good (especially with tea and cookies)
Hana no Nai Bara is very good too, love that CD.
Yoake no Scatt is the just the loveliest song in the series.
in second place comes the song with THE longest name: Sekai Tsuya Dan no Yuri Kago de - IN THE HANDS OF THE WORLD. I picture this as Anthy's theme.
but my favorite is Missing Link. I still get the shivers when I rewatch that scene.

I've taken some notes on some of the episodes. You might want to double-check the spots where I have a ???, but I think they're snippets of what's probably studio music. Also, the tracks with a * are the ones I believe vary distinctly from the CD track version (other than being cut short). Often, a lead-in is repeated more times than normal or something.

Eh, the marriage isn't so important as the steady income and stable household environment. So we should probably wait until then, at least.

But yeah, I think my rule has become, "if you can't post something awesome, don't post anything at all." emot-keke Obviously, I had the same idea as allegoriest a while ago, and did these ones for fun. Don't have any heart attacks yet, though - that's all I got.

that's great cause I dont' think I've done most those episodes. (did the first series, minus parts of ten because it was a living hell to sit though doing that, and a bunch of random episodes.)

I wrote all of mine down on paper, since I did it when I was sick and computerless...

half the first series music is really jsut sound effects I've noticed. X___x

...and I like that rule, that I do.

So hey, here's what Allegoriest and I have between ourselves so far, in terms of untangling the series soundtrack. Anybody else ready to pick up the slack and continue? (I would volunteer to do a bit more, but I can't for about 12 months).

Re: Death by Utena music...

Of all songs, it would have to be "ASUTORAGARUSU Chikyuu Sugoroku." It's the primary reason the main deity of my writings' fantasy realm is named Sofia. If it has to be a BGM, there's no way I can choose. I have such fond memories of the soundtracks, especially the first and second, that choosing a favorite track seems heart-wrenching. XD

I also love just about every song from the Utena musical.

I know they're off limits, but Kozue's duel song is easily my favorite, even though just about every other one is a close runner-up.

Re: Death by Utena music...

There are two (non-Nemuro Kinekan) BGM songs I adore: "Eien No Himitsu" and "Akio Enukyou - Video Na Kioku." The first is more just a beautiful piece of music that I always find inspiring. The mood is so lovely and ambiguous! The second I like because of its irony. emot-dance Nothing makes me happier than when a peppy song plays as someone's whole life is torn down sheet by sheet.

Now, there's a song in the begining of episode three that sounds sort of like a classier Gakuen No Lyrics. Does anyone know what it's called or where I could get a hold of it?

Argh. I don't remember my password. >\
(is really allegoriest pretending to be my housemate)

The song where Anthy comes in at the beginning of episode 3 is Morning Lyrical, track 3 on OST 3 (Internal Clock Municipal Orrery.)

During moving packing/unpacking i found a notebook I wrote down the first series songs, and a couple random episodes from the rest of the show.
....I just have no idea where I put it. emot-gonk

I didn't count the eyecatch most of them time I think though, mostly because some versions completely skip it, and I hate them anyway. emot-mad

I'm also still hunting down my DVDs and now am hideously busy anyway. emot-gonk

Re: Death by Utena music...

Oh man, big Necro...

So a few people I know asked me about the classical music songs in Utena, so I figured I'd post them here too in case there was someone else who didn't know.

No episode numbers today, just small descriptions of scenes.
...Well, except the first one.

In episode three, at the lovely ball, they enter to bal[舞踏会] (OST 5, track 8) where everyone swoons over Utena's dress. Nanami steals Anthy, and Touga pops up, bringing Berlioz's Un Ball (Symphonie Fantastique) with him. Anthy freaks out in the crowd and they spray her with Champagne, (fruit defendu[禁断の木の実] OST 5, track 29).  Anthy is unwillingly naked from nowhere, drama ensues (keeping in with the OST 5 spirit since its in my drive, nouvelle mariee[花嫁] track 2, or The Revolutionary Girl Overture, OST 1, track 1) Tableclothes and Chuchu save the day, with Eros of the Ball, OST 1, Track 11.

Episode 15
The day starts of with bird SFX, Kozue flirting, then Miki comes in, and Pessimism (OST 3, track 8) follows. Teacher comes in, Kozues gets angry. Happy Subtitle!! Nanami comes to check in ome emo!Touga, whil he's listening to Dvorak's New World Symphony (largo) (the part you want is about 4:30 in.) and she promises to take care of the student council. (And OMG, I just flipped through the rest of the episode, but I think the next BGM is the sunlit garden about 8 minutes in...)

And of course, in episode 37 in the infamous tea and cookies scene, Bach busts in with Jesu bleibet meine Freude while our favourite ladies consider horrible poison.

...also included are an organ version and a piano version from the End of Evangelion OST cause I really like it on slow piano.
...The first is there cause I wanted to keep strings, but they and the choir scare me.

...And I lied. I did give episode numbers. Oh well.

...Did I forget any?
