That sort of thing happened to one of my great uncles. He was trying to get a kitten down from where it had climbed up into the chimney of some house my gran was helping clear out. Long story short, kitty scratched him and his thumb was the size of a tennis ball when they brought him to the hospital. Someone told me it had something to due with the way cats claws are shaped 
- that there's a groove on the underside that acts as a natural collection point for bacteria. I've never done the research to confirm it though.
My uncle was alright after a short stint in the hospital. Fingers crossed, Josef recovers just as well.

If it helps to know, these kinds of things tend to look very ugly at the time, but heal very, very well. Even if they have to split the finger.
