Re: Utena fanart!

Both Shiori and Chigusa look excellent, but something about the Chigusa picture is just... enchanting. The hand on the shoulder really completes it.

Tohubohu, I really like the style you've approached this picture with. Anthy in particular looks great - something about her face makes her seem very sly. I like it, you should consider finishing it.

Akio, you have nice turns of phrase, but your points aren't clear and you have no textual support. I can't give this a passing grade.

Re: Utena fanart!

I seem to have missed quite a few beautiful pieces here lately. As an art-fail type, I'd feel pretty silly about actually saying everything I would like to say about all of these, but I'd like to say one or two things.

1. Panther, you're a goddess. I particularly like the sketch of Juri on the chair. It has so much...style, you know?

2. Rhyaniwyn, your work is wonderful and strange and I can't stop looking at it. It's absurd, and also a little moving...I don't have any idea what I'm trying to say here, except that I reeeeally like it. Sort of like Panther's Juri sketch, it seems to contain more potential than fact if that makes any sense...this is why I'll never be an art critic. Anyway, the possibilities it suggests...oh I give up. But it's awesome.poptart

That's a very cool collage, rhyaniwyn. It's hard to tell if it's digital or traditional. How did you make it?

Re: Utena fanart!

It actually started out traditional, for an art class at community college.  I'm way more of a digital artist, though, so it had a lot of issues.  But I liked the idea and kind of wanted to prove to myself that it would have been better if I'd done it on the computer.  I used Adobe Illustrator to trace out Utena and the elephant head, then to create the 'swatches' of colored paper and to trace the shape of some rose petals.  Then I ported it into Photoshop for greater control over the layer blending and transparency.  I made just a little use of some grunge brushes I made (splattered paint onto paper, scanned in).  The poetry in the very back layer looks strangely like it was actually ripped from a book in the print--I was surprised and kind of happy about that, since that was what I actually did (ripped up phone book pages) in the original traditional media collage!

Thanks!  I think it's really very bizzare and I'm just not sure how I feel about it aesthetically.  But I worked on it twice, so I'm not willing to scrap it, even though I'm still not sure if I *like* it.

Awww, she so sweet emot-biggrin  For some reason I like the "unfinished" version much better.  The colored version is -- I don't know -- maybe a shade too Uncanny Valley for me?  She looks a little like an anime RealDoll.

I think because in the unfinished version, I had imagined her smiling with teeth. The open mouth finished version seems a bit odd.

Otherwise, it's a smashing Wakaba. emot-dance

Re: Utena fanart!

I need to subscribe to this thread so I won't miss stuff. Dollface, I adore your Wakaba. You captured her essence perfectly, the genki just jumps out of the computer screen at me like an overaffectionate dog or something.emot-keke

Anji, don't sell yourself short. That's a lovely Anthy, I especially like how she looks coy as she pulls the sword out of herself...it seems a little more naughty somehow.

And Maarika...what can I say? Your work is delightful as always, but why does Utena look a litle uncertain here? She seems troubled...emot-frown Thanks for sharing.
