[Puzzles!] The Thirteen Anime Mysteries

So I wrote some anime-themed puzzles for people to solve!  They are a bit sneaky.  None of them is quite like any puzzle you're likely to have seen before, and they don't come with instructions.  (Not clear ones, anyway.)  Figuring out what to do is part of the puzzle!  If you're inclined towards mysteries, take a look!  Try them out, collaborate with your friends, and have a blast in general. emot-smile

The game starts here.

Oh man i love these things, but i'm generally terrible at them.

Before I get started posting all of my theories and the like -- should I keep it spoiler free? or is this the area which we share notes?

Just curious emot-smile

Share notes, absolutely!  emot-biggrin  But when in doubt, use spoiler tags.  You might want to indicate which puzzle you're talking about, like so:

Revolutionary Girl Utena: [I'm pretty sure it's not a sudoku]

Bahahaha emot-biggrin  It's not that bad, I promise.

Some good guidelines for dealing with puzzles that have no instructions:

- First, react to what you're seeing without thinking too much about it. Does this look like anything familiar? A sudoku? A crossword puzzle? Something else? If so, what happens when you treat it like what it looks like?

- Use words to describe what you're seeing. More than once I have figured out how a puzzle works by describing it to my brother.

- And in particular, if something specific is weird or unexpected, describe what is weird as precisely as you can.

- Some useful questions to ask may be:
-- Am I making the most of the instructions, if any? Does the puzzle have a theme that helps?
-- Are there clues I have to solve? Explicit clues, like in a crossword puzzle? Implicit clues?
-- Do I have to put some things in order? If so, is there a natural way to order these things? Alphabetical? Chronological?
-- Could there be a code involved? Morse? Semaphore? Binary?
-- If I have a list of words, can I take one letter from each of them? The first letter of each? A specific letter that the puzzle indicates?
-- Is there something that different puzzle elements have in common?
-- Does anything look Googlable?
-- Is there a hint?

- Recruit help. What is obscure to one person might be obvious to another.

- Finally, come back to it later. Something about looking at the puzzle with fresh eyes might trigger an Aha! moment.

I hope some of this helps! emot-smile

Ten years? Lightweight. I'll get this figured out in eight at most!

Why did I find this so late at night? Now I won't be able to sleep.

But, in all seriousness, I am already stumped at the first puzzle. [Am I, by any chance, looking for the names of other flowers hidden behind the roses?]

Re: [Puzzles!] The Thirteen Anime Mysteries

I think Flah is right, [it could be latin names for a flower somewhere in there? But then what do the seals signify?] Hmmmm

Okay, okay, I think I have something: [if I take the rose seal as a stand-in for the word rose, there are several words not related to the flower, but containing the word rose, to be found. I entered several (prosecutor, primrose -not a rose emot-rofl, morose, prose) but that's not it. It's either a word I haven't found, or some word related to them all. Or something completely different]school-sherlock

Re: [Puzzles!] The Thirteen Anime Mysteries

Snow, I have identified [a rose-containing word for all 12 rose seals. I strongly suspect that the solution involves manipulating the 31 (or maybe 33) leftover letters,] but so far I have squat.

My words are:
[dextrose
kerosene
morose(ly)
primrose
prosecutor
proselytize
prosepoem
rosebud
rosemary
rosettastone
rhinoceroses
sucrose

Re: [Puzzles!] The Thirteen Anime Mysteries

Ooh, you're on to something here. Caught a few more:
[
microsecond
heterosexual
Pete Rose (seriously?)
Axl Rose (apparently seriously)
roseate (I had to look that one up)

Huh, let's put what's left in order... Holy crap!

Re: [Puzzles!] The Thirteen Anime Mysteries

Well done guys, I you did it! It worked for me, HINT: [Cross out what has roses, look at what's left]

[But now the second one left me stumped, the order probably refers to words, not letters, but I may be wrong.] I'll poke around a bit and see if I notice anything.

A word of thanks to satyr, whose puzzle is keeping me sane with the ghastly internet service I've been having the past few days, since I can putz around with it offline!

EDIT: OK, so far so good. [The blanks are pretty straightforward - words that make sense in the context of the sentence, but are also anime names - I have  Paranoia Agent(?), Is This A Zombie, Outlaw Star,Sailor Moon, One Piece, Ghost In The Shell.]

The third one: [I'm assuming the dance is the Hare Hare Yukai, making the anime the Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya.] That's all I have at this point.

Well done Flah! So sneaky, including a diagonal. emot-mad And proper nouns.

I didn't fancy the [Excel] puzzle, but I managed to complete the [Evangelion] one. What will he throw at us next?

I got in the damn robot. [I'm having trouble with clues 9 and 12 which will tell me what's missing from 24 and 39. Why does the farmer's cheese stand alone? Does all the other cheese consider it a pariah for sticking to its convictions? Is this a cheese to be admired?emot-confused]

Re: [Puzzles!] The Thirteen Anime Mysteries

Flah, a lot of those clues were pretty obscure, and I had to solve them with Google. The cheese was one of them.

For the [dancing stick figures], I assume you have to [watch the actual HHY dance frame by frame, and then arrange the stick figures in the order they actually appear, so that their associated letters spell something.] Don't got time for that right now.

[D'oh! I completely missed the meaning of 9 across.]

Now on to the next challenge.

EDIT: Does anybody know how to play Go? I mean besides putting down random pieces until the computer beats you? Because... Damn!

Re: [Puzzles!] The Thirteen Anime Mysteries

Checking in to report that I didn't give up on this! I'm lagging behind and plan to continue puzzlecracking when I catch up with my studying.

I'm stuck at [Kino's Journey]. I have some vague idea of the order, but I want to avoid entering random letter combinations, so I'm waiting for inspiration to kick in.
