The battle of cliches

An Utena-themed game I wrote for the UCJAS Revolution.

Below is a list of descriptions of Utena plot points.  For each one I want you to tell me what anime series or movie, other than Utena, makes use of the very same plot point.  No manga.  Now, open your mind...

(A) A girl who always wears men’s clothing finds herself unwillingly thrown in with a helpless woman whom it is crucial that she protect against all comers.  In the end, she helps bring about revolution.

(B) A young girl who is very sad meets a noble traveler riding upon his mount.  So impressed is she by him that she vows to become just like him.

(C) The five color-coded members of an elite, mysterious group conspire behind the scenes to alter the destiny of the world.  Their leader spends a lot of private time with an enigmatic man the other members suspect to be an enemy.

(D) A young woman’s distinctive piece of jewelry allows her to chase a prince into a world where miracles are an everyday occurrence.

(E) A young girl in dire need is cared for by a kind and noble gentleman.  Later, while trying to prove herself worthy of him, she finds herself torn between pursuing this demure godlike figure and courting the coarser red-haired man she meets during this pursuit.

(F) The main character meets a strangely emotionless girl that, for reasons they do not quite understand, everyone is out to capture.  Those that want to capture her say she is nothing more than a moving doll – albeit a moving doll with the power to revolutionize the world.  But through effort and perseverance on the part of her new friend, the emotionless girl slowly develops a love for the one who has taught her so much.  In the end, this girl’s liberation forever changes the world, but only at a great price.

Angel the girl of the flowers?  the original name was Hana no ko Lun Lun

Evangelion could be except nobody seems to want to capture her.

Let me think the others, because I read more manga than anime... I need to do a memory trip XD

Re: The battle of cliches

As to (D): I don't know anything about Angel, so it could be right -- the thing about cliches is they tend to be even more common than anyone imagines -- but it's not what I have in mind.  There's a much better-known show that fits the description.

As to (F): Not Eva, for the reasons you gave.  Pretty scary, though.

*Also Sailor gets a brooch but the magical world is already destroyed.
*There is a fairy tale of a girl that has to chase her true love(which is a prince) to a castle at the east of the sun and at the west of the moon. She  gets a golden ball, a golden comb and another-golden- thing-I-have-no-idea-how-to-say-it.english that help her to see the prince. I think that story would be the mother of the "quest for love" adventure.

Rose of Versailles, of course!

(C) The five color-coded members of an elite, mysterious group conspire behind the scenes to alter the destiny of the world.  Their leader spends a lot of private time with an enigmatic man the other members suspect to be an enemy.

Sailor Moon. Either the original series (mysterious man is Tuxedo Kamen) or Sailor Stars (mysterious... uh, man.... is Seiya). ;) Don't worry, I'm just joking... mostly.

Are you looking for Chobits, or Osamu Tezuka's Metropolis (the recent movie, not the manga)?

Re: The battle of cliches

Wowww, you guys are good!

(A) Dallbun gets a cookie for Rose of Versailles!  Furansu wo kakumei suru chikara wo!
(B) Still unanswered.
(C) Dallbun again for Sailor Moon!
(D) Yasha for Escaflowne!
(E) Still unanswered.
(F) Dallbun for Metropolis!  It disturbs me, however, that something this detailed could be mistaken for Eva or Chobits; this must be even more cliched a plotline than I thought emot-biggrin

Still two cookies up for grabs.  Who will claim the cookies?  I'll give hints if I don't see answers soon.

My rational part of my mind later said Sailor Moon, but it took the other part a good minute or two to stop yelling, "Captain Planet!"

Re: The battle of cliches

A cookie for Ger!  (B) is Kino no Tabi!  That was easily the most obscure of the six, too.  **loves Kino no Tabi**

Fushigi Yuugi is not what I have in mind for (E)... but since I've never seen it I can't be sure.  Yes, that's right, there's still someone in the world who hasn't seen Fushigi Yuugi.  emot-redface

So, let's see... when I wrote (E) it had been a while since I'd seen the show, so I didn't remember a couple really great additions to the clue.  If I wrote it now it would look like this:

(E) A young girl is very sad, for her mother and father have died.  She is cared for by a kind and noble gentleman called the Prince.  Later, while trying to prove herself worthy of him, she finds herself torn between pursuing this demure godlike figure and courting the coarser red-haired man she meets in the course of this pursuit.

Not an obscure show.  C'mon!  I have one more cookie here for someone to claim!

I'm no good at this game. emot-redface I only knew Rose of Versailles and Escaflowne.

Whatever E is, I haven't seen it. I don't forget a demure, godlike figure.

Akio, you have nice turns of phrase, but your points aren't clear and you have no textual support. I can't give this a passing grade.

Re: The battle of cliches

I immediately thought Gankutsuou on the second explanation, but the Count's not really that demure, Albert doesn't have red hair, and I don't think Haydee was interested in him in that way, anyway. I am truly stumped and befuddled.

XD I thought Fushigi Yuugi with the rescuer being either Tamahome or Hotohori, and the red-haired man obviously Tasuki (OVA2???) But obviously alas not what satyreyes was thinking of....

I'm guessing it's not a shounen mecha anime, which is mostly what I watch. So no clue o.O

But yes Kino no Tabi is definitely a good show.

Re: The battle of cliches

Hee hee.  No, sort of the polar opposite of shounen mecha.

And "godlike" is just a little bit more literally true than it sounds.

Neon Genesis Evangelion. The earlier meetings between SEELE and Ikari Gendou (and his assistant, Fuyutsuki) reflect this perfectly. I know this isn't what you had in mind, but if you look, it is an EXACT matchup.

Really?  Wow.  I don't remember SEELE being color-coded, but I admit I didn't watch Eva that carefully.  Cool!  A retroactive cookie for you.

In the early meetings, each member of SEELE was seated before a panel that glowed a different color on the table: green, red, blue, yellow, and I THINK white...yeah, I think 2 of the panels were white, for some reason. I should check to get the exacts. In the later meetings (including in the End of Evangelion film), the members weren't shown, but represented by holograms of numbered slabs indicating their position, and the color coding was done away with. Can you guess what my second favorite series is after SKU? *sweatdrop*

Yay, cookie! *munches* emot-dance
