This is a static copy of In the Rose Garden, which existed as the center of the western Utena fandom for years. Enjoy. :)

Maybe I'm a snob, then, but I really prefer it when people are singing notes.

I think you mean Miya-sama (though her personality is much more that of Saint-Juste) -- but yes, I agree that Oniisama E was an influence, moreso than RoV, which tends to get more spotlight.  Aesthetically, Utena shares similarities with the Versailles design, but in terms of subject matter and characterization I think it owes a lot more to Oniisama E.

Re: Let's talk about the musical

I kept putting off watching the musical too long to post in this thread when it first popped up, but now I have most of it memorized.

Touga dancing to Nanibito mo Kataru Koto Nashi is the best thing ever, and Akio is always good for a laugh. For some reason, I found that I positively adore Anthy in the musical. I'd fight in the duels if it meant I could win her, and then I would make her sing for me. Juri's actress was nothing special, but she just served as a reminder to me that I always seem to find Juri hotter as a real person than in the anime. And poor Juri was in love with Touga, because a very important person was missing from the musical... Shiori. emot-frown

Re: Let's talk about the musical

Oh my... talk of musicals and Oniisama E... wee! emot-tongue

Dallbun: HxH's musicals own my soul.  I have no idea how Bleach's rock musicals and the Tenipura musicals are so damn popular though.  HxH showed that anime musicals are best when you throw the actual seiyuu into the costumes.  Oh Hisoka. etc-love

Juri definitely = Miya-sama.  Just not nearly as much of a bitch as her.  Or as obsessed with Shakespearian poetry. emot-tongue

As for the Utena musical.. I still have my old untranslated fansub tape of it.  HAR.  I have the interviews on the same tape with a printout of the translation hiding somewhere as well.  But the musical... meh.  First issue, Dios looks like GROSS.  Just plain GROSS.  I am impressed with the mannerisms and voice for female-Akio but her height gets me laughing each time.  She's in HUGE platforms and barely Utena's size.  Other issue, lack of a real wig on Utena, wtf.  Lastly it was all too hokey... it just touched the surface of the first arc, the blandest part of the entire series.

The saddest thing.... THE SOUNDTRACK DOESN'T HAVE AKIO'S SONG.  I guess because another cast member sings it on the soundtrack - "Tsuyoku Kedakaku".. but his sounded like liquid sex.  >P I love it when the femme-Akio goes "Daaaaaijoooobu Daaaaaaaa aaaaaa aaaa ah!"

I completely agree! Akio's song was my favourite part, it's dissapointing not to have it.

There was definitely room for improvement, the but I love the musical anyways. Was there only musical that got made? They mention other things on wikipedia, but I don't know what they're referring to.

Re: Let's talk about the musical

I wish I could see more than the first two songs of the musical.
That's right, I only saw "I'd Rather Be a Prince" and "Something Blah Blah End of the World Miki's Gyrating Ass"

I'm a huge sucker for musicals of any kind, so I really loved it. And Wakaba girl was the cutest thing, ever. EVER.

Couldn't understand the random pink or blonde streak in Utena's hair though.

I didn't like Akio's song. It might have been the creepy Akio faces. But I didn't like the General style of the I Want You To Protect Me songs....

I did love their rendition of duely songs though.

What bothered me about the soundtracks was that only Anthy was singing everything!

Re: Let's talk about the musical

^I remember finding that video when I googled Faust/Utena for my final paper in my Faust course. I really hope it turns into someting complete, it looks really fun.

As for the actual musical, I only saw bits and pieces, so I feel like I missed out. But what I did see, I LOVED. It was great and campy, and that's just what I look for in musicals. Dios and Utena were really, really bad(emphasis on Dios), but Anthy had a beautiful voice. She seemed to fit the character nicely as well, except she wasn't anorexic. tsk tsk.

I'm trying to download a higher quality version on torrent, but it's unfortunately not active. It's too bad, because for what it is, I think it's a work of genius.

Re: Let's talk about the musical

I really wish I could get a proper copy of it. Anyone have any leads?

Anyway, I found it immensely amusing, and I actually do enjoy many of the songs. Yes, Masami Okui sings them on the soundtrack (unless memory betrays me), but I thought that Anthy's actress had some killer pipes. Everyone else was mediocre to kinda-bad, but it's still a lot of fun.

One of those file sharing sites, maybe?
http://www.gigasize.com/ If you make an account here you can share up to 600 MB in a file.
Either way this must happen for great justice!

Anyway, found myself looking around Youtube and my search for Utena musical stuff somehow led me to this:

'Tis funny.

Re: Let's talk about the musical

If you guys use torrents, it's fairly easy to find. Here's one: http://www.fulldls.com/torrent-anime-207847.html

Later this week, I'll split it up into rar pieces so I can upload it to sendspace if you want.

With that as my first experience of the Utena musical (and being a rather huge fan of theater and musical theater), I'm not quite sure if I should be traumatized or if I should proclaim this as BEST MUSICAL I'VE SEEN SINCE SWEENEY TODD.

Yeah, I felt like that too, but I soon fell into the ranks of realizing that a musical with everyone played by women, a person in a ChuChu suit and cheesy choreography was just too much in the spirit of the strangeness that is Utena to dispute it. Not to mention many of the songs are great.

Utena's voice grates on my nerves a bit though. She really sounds like she's doing a cross between yelling and singing and pouring more passion than grace into the performance, but I suppose that suits her too. XD

Re: Let's talk about the musical

I can't say I particularly care for the musical, although this version is much better than the musical that is on the OST 5.  But perhaps that is just because KaNNa's voice drives me batty.  The only thing I might detest more might be Yumi Luka's voice, but that's neither here nor there.  With that said, here we go:

Part 1: http://www.sendspace.com/file/8oazjb (281 MB)
Part 2: http://www.sendspace.com/file/ytmvq9 (281 MB)
Part 3: http://www.sendspace.com/file/8uffni (15 MB)

I apologize for messing up the math.  I meant to have it split into two big files, but instead it needed a third smaller one.  If I had known it was going to do three files, I would have spread out the sizes more.  Anyway, use winrar or something to extract.

Bendy Miki is bendy. Wow. No wonder everyone and their sister wants to corrupt him. Shoot. I wonder if it's genetic, and if Kozue would let me give her a go...?

But yes, most of the singing is atrocious. Anthy's voice is pleasant, though. And Saionji's voice made me laugh. And Miki's made me cringe, poor girl. Spectacular dancer, though. And did I mention bendy? etc-wankgirl
