Kanashimi no Belladonna and the roots of Utena
I saw this film recently in high quality - It's worth your time, but boy was the ending screwy. Lots of visual metaphor and very unusual art - kinda reminds me of Yellow Submarine with the white backgrounds. I thought the rape depiction was some of the most intense I'd seen in cinema - ever.
Maybe people would like to share any parallels they found between this work and Utena?
Other works that I feel may have been an influence on Ikuni are Angel's Egg and /possibly/ Ai no Kusabi (I cannot recommend this film enough, it needs more love). Anyone notice any other anime/film/books/comics that may have contributed to Utena's creation?

...and because I haven't done so, that's all I can contribute to this discussion, pfft
(by the way, did you guys know that a US release of Belladonna will be shown in theatres in North America in 2015?)
