That said, what about using ah...digital sources. I have most of the series sitting on my computer dubbed in Italian for practice, and the image quality is good enough. (What? It's not like I can stop at Best Buy and pick up the Italian dubs. emot-mad)

As the footage you'd be loading into Premier to capture from would be considered essentially the same thing as your Italian dub digital files, I'm fairly certain you'd be able to load those in and "capture" from those just as you would any other source.  Premier actually has a really good user manual to use for reference and "how-to" as well.

You flatter me, hon.  I am far from an expert.  Just a beginner that gave it a good ol' try and produced something reasonably recognizeable as an AMV.  I did the Rurouni Kenshin OVAs to Metallica's "Enter Sandman".

I really liked all of Kestrel's Utena AMVs.

Re: AMV and fan vid recs

Would anyone make an Utena AMV using music from the soundtracks? I've never seen one of those before. Most people go for using other music, but the result is way different (and at the same time more natural) if you use some of the music intended to go with it.
If I make any sense. >_<

Seconded. Those were awesome when I was but a wee fanling, but they still hold up. "Peace and Love Inc." and "The Promise" are probably the worst of the lot, though I remain immensely fond of the latter. "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" is awesome. "After the Fall" is also quite an impressive Nanami video. "In God's Country" is one of my favorites of the far too superfluous Utena movie AMVs. And everyone who likes shounen-ai at all must immediately go watch "Never Meant to Be."

The AMVs that I've seen that use music from the original soundtrack of a series are generally pretty bad (admittedly, I haven't seen any Utena ones). AMVs are for approaching the material from a different direction. I'm sure series-music-AMVs could be done well, but... I guess it's that the attempts I've seen seem to think that, because they're using series footage and series music, they don't need a strong overarching theme or careful editing.

I think Utena is especially difficult in this regard. What are you going to do, make a Duel Chorus AMV? What footage could you possibly use to accompany the lyrics?

Re: AMV and fan vid recs

It has happened a long time since I downloaded AMV but my favorite or Utena are:
One that has the song "torn" by Natalie Imbrugia and scenes of episode 39.t
The recently mentioned bachelorette of Bjork with scenes of the first movie.

Re: AMV and fan vid recs

Here's a video that I made!

It's from the Utena movie, with one quick scene from the series.

Also, you have to be a member of AMV.org to download it... I hope you all like it!

My favorite Utena video is "Petals of Change" by Borihiei. It's both beautifully edited, and fits the movie wonderfully. It's also an award winner. emot-keke

I was thinking of making Utena AMV's with music from the OSTs. I have three or so themes I'm dwelling on. Guess I'll try it.

This one isn't exactly a AMV but it is Utena and its reasonably funny emot-keke

Click the link to watch: Utena - $6,000,000 Man?

I would love to have a flash movie maker where not only can you edit in parts of other flash movies, you can even do things like alter the picture, draw over and draw in things like lips to make lip-syncing easier and smoother looking.

Re: AMV and fan vid recs

My favorite video, hands down, is "Something Eternal" by manga punk sai.

http://www.mangapunksai.com/V2/amvs.php

Whenever I feel like watching the movie but don't have an hour and a half to spare, I just watch this AMV and it's almost as good.

Re: AMV and fan vid recs

I must share this AMV.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FGCpBQa1Zv8 "You're Not Here" is the opening song for Silent Hill 3, and I love Akira Yamaoka's work immensly. etc-love While that is not the best song, I very much like all the songs performed by Mary Elizabeth McGlynn (She's also a voiceactress and has appeared in various animes). And here's the SH3 opening video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h-KDXArBGKk because I must do my best to show more Silent Hill stuff to you people.

Hey, does she do most of the songs on the SH3 soundtrack?  Because if so, she has the most beautiful & calming voice I have ever heard.  etc-love
