Headache-Inducing Tacky Movies

That's right. We have three movie threads and none of them are about tacky horror or sci-fi movies.

We recently acquired a DVD copy of a movie Lady Lortab watched some time ago. It's called Matango: Attack of the Mushroom People, and apparently it's a Japanese sci-fi movie that's even tackier than Godzilla Vs. Mothra, according to the Lady. The premise is thus:

Shipwrecked humans find themselves on an abandoned island. The humans find a derelict ship with tons of 'shrooms inside. Reading the logbook says the 'shrooms are dangerous to eat. Some of the humans ignore the wise words of wisdom and eat the 'shrooms anyway. The 'shrooms turn them into 'shroom-people who attack the humans.

AND -- get this -- "Matango" is the name of the mushroom village in the SNES game Secret of Mana!

Haven't watched it yet, but I plan to tonight. If the Lady consents.

What other tacky movies have you people watched? emot-tongue

The Evil Dead series. Seriously, they are the best horror movies in the world.

If you ever watch one ridiculously cheesy flick, let it be Army of Darkness, the third in the Evil Dead series. It is genius.etc-love

Did you ever watch the cartoon show? Genius. Absolute. Motherfucking. Genius.

The first time I ever watched that was with a guy I was seeing at the time. It was, without doubt, the most bizarre thing I'd ever seen, mostly because I tried to watch it as a serious movie. Every other scene I was like "Wait, a minute, wtf...?" Then I was plied with white russians and the movie was made far, far better.

Split Second cannot have its dubious praises sung loud and frequently enough.  It has Rutger Hauer, Kim Cattrall, and the devil's a DNA-absorbing serial killing Predator/Alien rip-off!  The Hauer is fueled by "coffee, chocolate and anxiety" and there are much guns and lying down in a splash of blood on the restroom floor to have a think.  Absurdly good one-liners and straight-man set-ups, pretty decent action, water water everywhere as London's flooded (and consisting of tenement housing and nightclubs with occasional subway station).

Peter Jackson's Bad Taste is always hilariously tacky. And Tamago's mentioned it before, but Hercules Returns? CLASS. TERRIBLE, HORRIBLE, AWFUL CLASS. emot-rofl

Re: Headache-Inducing Tacky Movies

Well, three days ago (after I finished starting this thread, in fact!) I watched Matango. It was great. The dub was good. Even the 'shroom people were good looking (for being 'shroom people, that is). I have two words to say about it...

"They're delicious!"

Everybody says that about the Matango mushrooms. EVERYBODY.

I'm all for 'shroom people. emot-dance

This scene from Lair of the White Worm is the most deliciously tacky of any sci-fi movie I've seen (NSFW!).

Re: Headache-Inducing Tacky Movies

Tacky movies? Well, you can't go wrong with "Plan 9 from Outer Space", widely considered the worst movie ever. Then just work your way through the rest of Ed Wood's catalogue.

My best friend and I like to call bad or tacky movies "art films". A good example is Roman Polanski's "The Tenant." Just because Polanski's name is on it, it doesn't mean it's good.

Is that from a porn movie?

Completely agree about Ed Wood.  He's pretty much a legend in the world of B movies, and made some of the most horribly great films ever.  Crappy acting, irrelivant stock footage, terrible (even by 50's hollywood standards) special effects, you name it, Ed Wood fucked it up.  His movies are definately in that "so bad it's good" category.

No, it's a Ken Russell flick with some of the most hilariously twisted moments of any movie (despite its actually pretty simple plot). I guess that it could come across as being something like that. It's really wild, but definitely one of my favorite so-bad-it's-good movies.
