This is a static copy of In the Rose Garden, which existed as the center of the western Utena fandom for years. Enjoy. :)
I live 2 hours away from San Fran myself, so if you need me to do some hounding, I can wiggle my arse over there and spend a day exlporing around. I also have a truck and will be driving, so if there's anything a distance outside of the city we want to go see, I can pile as many people as I can into the back of le truck and we can have a tailgate party.
And San Fran is fairly redneck girl friendly. They go up to the Sierra's all the time and they have to deal with plenty of us up there, so most of them have experience. Plus, they are surrounded by farming country. They're bound to be pretty redneck friendly in my personal opinion. If they're not, then I'm not sure when they built the huge wall between them and the rest of the world. But, if it helps you feel better, I come from California's hickville, so you won't be the only one there that could be classified as "redneck".

San Francisco in August? I can do that....I hope.
I was looking at the Weather Channel website, and the 10 day forecast is low-to-mid 60's for highs and mid 50's for lows. In July.
FAKE EDIT: All of JetBlue's destinations from Houston are on the EAST coast. All of them. If I want to fly with them to SF, I have to Greyhound it to Austin.

I really hope that I have money and can swing this. Also seconding the Gio is mandatory and adding Yasha is mandatory as well. I wonder if the that roller coaster is real and or finished that goes through the city. Also who is up for a side trip to Sin City...if possible I have shows to catch

August works for me, too.... At least, I believe it will as of now. My only real consideration for dates is my hire date at work. B/c of it, I get my yearly vacation allotments on April 30/May 1, so stuff right before then is hard for me, because I'd have to save up vacation days until the very end (when they expire & I get new vacation hours). Obviously I wanna use them all and distribute them throughout the year somewhat...so that I get the full value from 'em and don't have a mental breakdown from too much work. :-)

Cost wise I would recommend to people outside the state save as if they are going to New York. Cost of living in Cali is higher than other places, gas is ridiculous, but you can have a frugal excursion as well. Public Transportation within the city isn't as good as in New York but it's decent enough. If the plan is for most people to stay in and around Union Square that makes going to other destiantions easy.
I'll be up there in August over night for a bacholorette party so I may have time to snoop about and check into things if you want me to. There's a lot to do in the city, shows, drag shows, shopping, site seeing, eating (yay crab and Ghiradeli chocolate, China Town, Little Italy etc.).

I kinda feel like I'm starting to spam the thread a bit much for someone who may wind up not going....again. But I just had to share this.
The Hotel des Arts-- It looks like the SF equivalent of the Carlton Arms. It's got rooms painted by local artists, and the rates are pretty damn cheap. There's also a suite that for $189 a night has a living room, bathroom, and bedroom. It can sleep up to six people(bedroom holds 4, and the couch folds out.) AND it comes with a flat screen TV. As an added bonus, it's pretty close to Union Square.

....o shi. Maybe we don't need the Hilton afterall. Between this and this, I think SF is starting to look reeeeeal nice.
Edit: Alithea just said she could be able to make a runby to this hotel when she's in SF next month to check it out for location/condition. If it checks out, I plan to book as soon as they will allow me, and I suggest those of you interested in going to RoseCon for sure do the same. The mistake we made last time was waiting too long to book hotels, so we were scattered about the city. That was...exciting, but I think this time around it'd be to everyone's advantage if we're all in the same hotel, or at least the same area. Unless Alithea comes back saying there's shit on the walls, this is where Yasha and I will be.
VV It's the California Academy of Sciences, opening later this year. Planetarium, huge rainforest dome, aquarium. Definitely a focus on nature and preservation. There's definitely going to be a group going, although I won't demand we all do it. We did the MET last time, so we can be geeky/squeal at cute animals this time.
...and go to the planetarium.
....what?

Oh wow. That sounds absolutely lovely. Because I was starting to get confused, wondering if it was really $400+ a night at the Hilton.
And Gio, that page isn't loading for me -- what is it?
I'm currently checking into the Academy of Art University, and the tuition sounds reasonable, but I'm not sure where to look for out-of-state tuition, because I'm sure the $18,225 undergrad tuition is for California natives only. :/

The link for the the San Francisco Academy of Science. They are having a new building built and it will be open by next year. It's going to be awesome!
Maybe try this link: http://www.calacademy.org/index.php
And Lady N... I was looking at the site and I beleive that the tuition listed there is including out of state. You can always contact them and find out. Not to mention apply for grants and things like that.

Oh that sounds so damn awesome. And thank you, Alithea! It's good to know that there probably aren't any extra fees. This makes me happy.
Hopefully, by that time, I'll have a one-way ticket there, and maybe the dorms will be open. I need to check to find out when the school year tends to start, and if my credits will transfer from a regular community college to an art university. If not, too bad, going anyway.
Strangely enough, my grandparents want to come along. I'm not sure how to feel about this. :|
At least they have Merriot points to stay in some rooms. Are there any Merriots or Merriot-affiliated hotels in that area?

I'm not sure about SF's Balthazar, though I could definitely ask people who eat more expensively than I do, but Le Papillon is a lovely French place in San Jose with some amazing menu items. They can do private parties both for lunch ($35/person for the cheaper version, $45/person for the more fancy one) and dinner ($75/person), which is a plus because we might be able to get everyone who can afford the place in. I haven't been there in quite a while but if it's anything like I remember then it's definitely worth a visit. It's a fair distance from San Francisco proper but I think it's worth the trip.
Lady N, if you mean Marriott then yes. We have a lot of those.
And as for accommodations, if you don't absolutely have to stay in SF proper I may be able to offer crash space to one person. Maybe. I can't promise anything because I don't own the house, but...
As far as everything else goes, I'll have to keep my eyes open for interesting things to do. Stopping by the Castro is a must, even if you're not a gay man. The best pizza in the city - and quite possibly on the entire West Coast - is there.

!!! OPSHUNS, FEEDBACK PLZ
I've looked at my school schedule and the two possible date lines for RoseCon09 are August 11-13, Tuesday-Thursday, and August 14-16, Friday-Sunday. They both have benefits and drawbacks, and Yasha and I frankly do have a preference.
In both cases you're dodging having to fly on Saturday or Sunday, the pricy days. The weekday dates will have cheaper hotels. The difference is fairly marginal. However we are staying near the major shopping center, and will be dealing with a retarded packed mess if we stay over the weekend, where during the week things will tone down and we'll have more of the city to ourselves. Of course, it also means we miss the raging weekend nightlife, and Haight-Ashbury won't be as jumping as it is on weekends. Weekdays may be harder for some of you to get off, though.
Personally, I would prefer the earlier dates, because for one, less crowd = better, when you're dealing with groups of 6+ and don't want to lose track of each other on the street. For the other, hm. Hard to say without sounding like an asshole, but having it earlier gives Yasha and I longer to ourselves afterward. It's not that we don't love you guys and love RoseCon, but it takes a lot of planning and agonizing, and it's very tiring. We could use the week after to ourselves to relax and settle into the victory of giving you all a great time.
But this is something that's up to you guys, ultimately. So feedback's appreciated.
Edit: Still don't know about SF's Balthazar, but Thomas Keller's* original restaurant, The French Laundry, as well as his moderate one, Bouchon, are a drive out into Yountville.
*Of Per Se fame, and by fame I mean one of the top restaurants in NYC.

I have to say, I agree. This makes this easier for students/those who don't work in the summer who have to get back to work earlier than others. Because truthfully, I think I go to school on the 18th. That may or may not change when I get to SF.
Offline
Either way!
Edit: Don't airlines usually charge more if you're not staying over a Saturday, since they assume you're a business traveler who isn't paying for the trip himself?

Mmmm... French Laundry. We had their cookbook at Williams-Sonoma, and it was impossible to keep in stock. Very popular. I actually would love the tues-thurs dates, as I hate traveling on the weekends. I also like the thought of having the dates fixed well in advance, as it will make bookings a LOT easier. I'm really hoping I can make it out there, especially with this much advance notice.

Earlier works better for me. I suspect my semester will start either that week or the next, but the earlier dates give me a slightly better chance of not having to take extra vacation.

I'm in the earlier camp -- as I said, if my sister is going to be in Canada at the same time, I'm likely to come into the States in the middle of July, prance about Vancouver/Toronto/Montreal for a couple of weeks, and then come back to San Fran in order to catch my flight to New Zealand. My sister's birthday is July 27th and she wants to be in Canada for it, so if I want to match my travel with hers my travel dates will have to be around there...so having my swan song in SF around the eleventh is fine with me, as I'll be around for about three weeks, I think.

Of the optional cities, San Francisco's the optimal for me, geographically, monetarily, and in the sense that I already know half the layout and the good bars (two dollar Guinness I come for you!). I may become maudlin and sentimental for the Tenderloin, and I'll probably steer clear of some of the pricier touristy ventures that may be popularly attended. Earlier's going to be a bit better - hypothetically - but I'll also be totally honest and admit I only have a vague notion of what might be my schedule around then.
And my medical tests say I am in fact not (or not any longer) allergic to shellfish! So, um, yeah. That kinda weighs in.
But, really, I just wanna see all you crazy great folks!

The August dates would be the easiest dates for me to attend. I'm still in school in May, and going during spring break would be tricky.
Offline
The earlier August date, I'd say. I'm not in school anymore, but it seems like it would work for more people. And really, you'd have to take off either way, its just a question of how many days.
OMG EXCITED

Early August for me.
That is if college doesn't suck me dry like a ten-dollar whore on a white-collar business man who has a thirty-three percent chance of being her father.

Either August date works for me. August in general is super-perfect because that's the month that there's no summer school OR regular school for me.
I need a dead from joy and excitement emote.

The distance from Seattle to Vancouver is about 130 miles as the plane flies; from SF to Vancouver, about 800.
Still all the way across the continent, then, whichever way you slice it. T_T...

So the way things stand right now, unless something drastic happens, RoseCon09 will be taking place in San Francisco, August 11-13. So far that artsy hotel in the French Quarter is ground zero, and almost definitely where Yasha and I will be. Anyone that isn't interested in staying there is strongly encouraged to hunt for hotels around the same area, the Union Square corner of town. Once things are a little more solid, I'll start researching.
