This is a static copy of In the Rose Garden, which existed as the center of the western Utena fandom for years. Enjoy. :)
While we're on the subject of walkthroughs: I assume everyone knows about this site, but just in case:

Yes, between the two, it should be much easier to get somewhere in the game.

Thank you all so much for the wealth of resources. I didn't even know that there was a Saturn emulator that worked, much less one that would play the Utena game itself. Here's hoping that a translation project will pan out -- I'm no help when it comes to either translation or programming, but if storage space is needed, I would be happy to host some files on arisugawa.org.

Oh gosh, I just played my first time through and can't believe what a fun game this. Thank you to everyone for the upload and such~ I've always wanted to play this game, and glad I've gotten the chance.

I think at the very minimum, between the walkthrough already available and the willingness of people here to do crazy things, we could get a very, very dynamic translation/walkthrough that you could print out and follow while playing or something, if we can't actually translate the game.
What kind of hosting are we talking about? I'd really like to actually put this stuff online period, on EM or something, so people who aren't on the forums can get their hands on it, but as it stands, I don't think I have the bandwidth, and hosting is running me down to 200MB left on the server, which is cutting it close given that I have 2GB of space on this account. I'm going to talk to Yasha about upping the account to a larger one and maybe hosting the whole thing on Empty Movement, with all involved's permission and help. That said, mirrors for the game discs would be nice to have. I don't anticipate ever brutally needing them, but I've learned the hard way everyone jumps a boat at once. The gallery consumed 100GB of transfer in one month once, and that was with hotlink protection on.
Oh BTW, off topic, but now that the Saturn emulator doesn't entirely suck...I gotta find me Panzer Dragoon Saga.
Edit: And Astal.

I have almost 2GB of space free. My bandwidth is hardly being used as present, considering my domain is essentially stagnant, so I'm sure I could handle the disc mirrors.

Hey, Everyone,
The game instructions have been modified slightly due to some questions I got. Thanks to everyone who's emailed that the game is working.

Are you a student? If so, you can get a discount. Saves about $200.

If you can't find the games that you want, email this guy. He's super nice, honest and friendly. Met him at a con. Bought my Sega Saturn from him. If he doesn't have it, he'll try to get it.

I met that guy at Tekkoshocon. He is very nice, and he sold me on a copy of Pocket Fighter, which I really love.

I just want to say thanks to all of you guys for this -- I've been wanting to play this game forever, so now that I finally have a chance, I'm very happy!
Now, if you'll excuse me, I have a Juri to go seduce.
EDIT: Or not.. it seems the emulator doesn't want to open on my mom's computer (I know it won't open on mine, as it's a nice POS, but mom's is a really good computer).. I double click on it, and I get the standard windows Error message, and it asks me to send a bug report.

I will PM you and we can work on getting the game to work on your computer. On the Juri note, I finally made it into the shower with her. Oh, yeah.

Translating Japanese is arduous enough for me that I have not exactly been translating every dialogue box as I've progressed through the game. From what I've caught, the dialogue seems to follow the spirit of the show's dialogue pretty well. I wanted to share one amusing translation, though. When you have your first extended conversation with Utena, just after your first dialogue branch ("Do you have a girlfriend?"/"Do you have a boyfriend?"), the camera does its panning over Utena like you're really looking at her for the first time.
Your character's immediate reaction? "OMG, she has boobs!"

I downloaded the four items and have succesfully played through the first disc of the game (I really wish i understood what they were saying)
How do I succesfully switch the disks and continue onward?

About Kanji
Kanji is what makes translating Japanese a royal pain in the butt as there is up to 50,000 kanji altogether.
But these days, there is only is there 1,945 essential kanji that you really need to know.
There is up to 50,000 other kanji but any Japanese publication using Kanji outside of the essential 1,945 is legally required to print the Hiragana interpretation of the obscure Kanji symbol above it to make it easier to understand.
The average adult Japanese citizen knows between 5,000 to 8,000 different kanji.
Edit: I hope you all learnt something.

Anyone gotten that far? I haven't. I thought that you could use Alcohol 120% to "unmount" Disk 1 from the virtual drive and "mount" Disk 2 instead. Does that work?

....I know this is not what anyone wants to hear.
After about a week of trying, I'm going to have to give up on converting my PC to handle Japanese language fonts at the same time as English. While Vista, by some accounts, supports this, WinXP doesn't in any way that doesn't severely mess up my other computer-related hobbies. Maybe in another two years when I finally give in and do that upgrade I'll be able to help, but right now....
That said, I'm fully behind any attempt to get this project done. I'm just not sure I can help.

If you had another computer dedicated to the task, would that help? If so, what specs/programs would that computer have to have?

For What I can do, I can create a copy of the game using RPG Maker XP. However I need someone that translates the dialogue, and I'm not sure that the program support videos. But we can make it.

from my experience using the rpg maker program, using it to make the utena game is going to be nearly impossible. the game's entire format works on a 32-bit setup, similar to gba quality. translating into flash would be far easier, but just as time consuming.
the easiest thing to do would be to track down professional saturn programing software, boot into the game itself, change the dialouge and then run a new disc via the saturn's action replay.
the biggest problems are that the software, while available through ebay, is hit and miss at best.
the second is cost. the cheapest ive seen the software go has been $300

We took the rom down because it was eating up so much space. We should be able to put it up for a little bit again, but I don't have a copy, so Gio will have to do it.

I didn't get to mention it to Gio this morning... either she'll see it here and let you know, or I'll let her know late late tonight.
