This is a static copy of In the Rose Garden, which existed as the center of the western Utena fandom for years. Enjoy. :)
I vote to Thank him. It seems early to me to start choosing who's going to fall...

Thank him. I like perfect endings.

Sp- Thank him.

Thank him! I doubt the perfect ending is something you have to work not to get, whether we shoot for it or not. Plus, I'd rather feed someone else to Chigusa.
Offline
Well, we're going for Miki's ending, or possibly Utena's or the perfect ending. Scoring points with Touga doesn't harm any of those alternatives and also lets us see a dialogue branch we haven't seen yet. Tee hee, I guess I am pretty cute.

I would actually kinda like to see more of Touga. (Take that any way you want.) Thank him.

Let's thank him. But Miki is still our main prey- I mean target- I mean we like him.
Unrelated: it just occured to me that Touga is the only character I haven't seen naked in a game cap. Most of the characters you get to see in a shower scene but if Touga has one, nobody capped it.

Wait...both of the game guides I read said that "saying you want to be engaged" gains you the Anthy point...I mean, that's the one which makes the most sense, b/c it puts you on Anthy's radar that you're a potential prey (er, I meant opportunity) So...confused...
Yeah, I'm not 100% sure, but joking is the choice that gives us the weird chiming noise that indicates an Anthy point (or so I'm given to understand). Either the guides are wrong about the choice, or the sound, and I suspect it's the former.
They both should have a chime. "I want to become engaged too" is the Anthy point. The other one is the Gag point, which...I'm not sure what it does, really, besides let you avoid getting points (and also lets you tell horrible jokes). I looked in the guidebook, but my Japanese grammar is very rusty, so I'll post the appropriate part here.

We can't get the Anthy ending, anyways, so it's not like it's a loss.
Actually, according to Ozma, we can (and I'd trust Ozma, she has seriously strong fairy magic). I haven't checked myself or anything, though.
I wish I could provide photographic proof, but I don't have a camera at the moment. All I can do at the moment is say that there are ten possible endings (Utena, four Student Council members, Perfect, Normal, Black Rose, Anthy and Akio). No ending requires you to play through the game once before being allowed to get it.

Thank him. Enjoying one compliment won't hurt.

Huh, cool! I had no idea that Gag and Anthy Points were separate! I must not have noticed the Anthy Point sound on the first play-through. I'll keep an ear out for them from now on, though I guess the choices should be fairly clear.
Revolutionary Girl Utena: Itsuka Kakumei sareru Monogatari Official Guide pg 26 wrote:
There are also two hidden parameters, Anthy Points and Gag Points. If you don't collect them diligently, you can't get the Anthy Ending. What are these, you ask? Well, you receive Anthy Points when you select choices that favor Anthy, and likewise, you receive Gag Points when you make jokes. In both cases, you'll hear a special sound effect to indicate it, which are those suspicious-sounding noises you sometimes hear during the game.
For example, take choice at the cafeteria on the 22nd. This is the best opportunity to understand the system. You choose to gain either an Anthy Point or a Gag Point, and learn to recognize the noises for each.
"I want to become engaged too" -> Anthy Point Up
This is the selection that gives you an Anthy Point. After all, you are saying that you want to become engaged to her.
"Try making a joke" -> Gag Point Up
This is the gag choice. You hear the sound effect for a Gag Point, but Utena doesn't seem to appreciate it, and just shrugs off the joke...
Yeah, that certainly doesn't make it clear what the difference is, does it?

Don't worry about it, no need to go that far. Cool, so we can get the Anthy ending whenever... but this time around, we probably want an ending that completes the plot properly, anyway.
Moving on, we decide to thank Touga for gracing us with his charming presence.
D-ko:
My name's Kageno D-ko.
First of all, thank you for inviting me to this wonderful ball.
It's my first one, so...
Touga:
Oh? Well, don't be nervous.
It's fine to just talk to your friends, or to enjoy the food.
But, of course, the purpose of a ball is to dance.
A man reaches out for a woman's hand,
and their sweet evening in the ballroom begins.
(Music: Eros of the Dance, D1T11)
D-ko:
Waa! He's taking my hand!
Touga:
Won't you please grant me a dance, young lady?
D-ko:
Uh, sure...
Anthy:
Have fun.
Utena:
That guy moves fast, so be careful!
Touga +1
38% -> 46% (+8%)
Darn, +9% would have been so simple.
Student: (Female)
Hey, who's that dancing with Touga?
Student: (Female)
The honor of having the first dance with Touga usually goes to a girl who's great at sports, or academics!
Student: (Female)
I've never seen that girl before...
D-ko:
Uh, it seems like we're attracting a lot of attention for some reason...
It's like everyone's hostile, or jealous... that's the kind of looks we're getting.
Touga:
What's wrong?
You seem uncomfortable.
Or could it be that there's someone else who's caught your eye?
D-ko:
N, no, nothing like that.
Doesn't this guy look kind of like someone I know...? But who?
Touga:
You're in the East Dorm, just like Tenjou-kun, right?
So, how is it? Are you pleased with it?
D-ko:
The Chairman of the Board just told me where I would be living after school today...
So I haven't even spent thirty minutes in my room yet.
Touga:
Oh, you met the Chairman?
D-ko:
Yeah.
Touga:
...I see.
By the way, at your previous school, were you in any clubs or activities?
For instance, fencing, or kendo?
D-ko:
No, I didn't really do any extracurriculars at my last school.
I've never done anything like fencing or kendo.
But apparently, a long time ago, my father used to be the adviser
for the Fencing Club here.
Hey, that's right... this guy looks kind of like dad!
Touga:
So your parents also attended this school?
D-ko:
Yeah, they say they met in the Fencing Club.
But according to my mom, she wasn't very good at it.
...and I think I probably take after my mom more.
Touga:
Is that so... at Ohtori Academy...
(Music: Campus Dandy, D3T13)
D-ko:
He's suddenly gone quiet. I wonder why?
Did I accidentally say something to offend him?
Um, excuse me...
Touga:
Hm? Oh, I'm sorry!
It's rude to have something else on one's mind while dancing with a lady.
D-ko:
No, it's okay...
Touga:
Ah... the music is stopping, it seems.
I guess our time together is over.
I had lots of fun. I'd like to talk with you again.
D-ko:
Wow, he has a wonderful smile.
I can see how girls would fall for him easily...
I'm also...
Touga:
Well, then, later.
Next time, let's make it just the two of us.
Oh, Touga. Getting to first base with Miki is probably going to be much more of a challenge.
(Music: Eros of the Dance, D1T11)
D-ko:
What should I do? I've been separated from Utena!
Where did those two go...
(I thought if I took off my mask, I'd be able to find them over there, but...)
Chu-Chu:
Chuuuuuu!
D-ko:
That voice is...!
(Music: Suspicion, D3T16)
Saionji:
What is it?
Do you want this, monkey?
Chu-Chu:
Chu, chuu!
Saionji:
Come on!
If you want it, reach up higher and take it!
D-ko:
It's that guy from this morning!
He's bullying Chu-Chu... what should I do?
CHOICE:
Confront him directly
Turn his attention some other way (+1 SAIONJI)
So Miki oversees the music and food, Touga mingles, Juri glares threateningly at troublemakers, and Saionji... torments monkeys. It's a wonder he's still popular.

I wonder what D-ko would do if we turned his attention some other way. Make a terrible joke again?
Offline
Divert his attention the old-fashioned way! (probably something involving boobies. )
Offline
Wow, once again, we can get points and see a new dialogue option at the same time! Plus I'm curious to see how D-ko distracts him.
Offline
Amen, killerQ, she's gotta show him her tits. Distract him!!!!
Offline
Saionji, may I divert your attention to some of the girls on the floor who are swooning for Touga?
Offline
Divert his attention, please!
Offline
Why the hell not, nothing wrong with trying to get on everyone's good side since it won't get in the way of anyone else's points.. and we haven't seen this one so divert him.
I'm so amused that she realized Touga looks like her dad.. and she was thinking he was hot and dancing with him. This show just gets more and more Freudian.
Offline
Divert his attention.

Well, it looks like D-ko has an Electra Complex. Yep, she'll fit in at Ohtori just fine.
I vote for diverting Saionji's attention.
Offline
Man, nothing quite so sexy as a dude that looks like your dad. rawr. Though granted, if Touga's ending may reveal some of the him and Akio dramaz, I am all for it.
DIVERT HIM.
Also, wtf is with Saionji and bananas?
Offline
Turn his attention some other way, perhaps by offering him cake and lying about who made it.
Touga:
Oh, you met the Chairman?
D-ko:
Yeah.
Touga:
...I see.
Touga: Can't I get even one girl before Akio does??
On a more serious note, I wonder if picking that option affected Chigusa's anti-points at all? Since D-ko seemed to be making other people jealous, plus she's acting less independent.
