This is a static copy of In the Rose Garden, which existed as the center of the western Utena fandom for years. Enjoy. :)
Need I say more? Do you like that show? Which characters do you like? What do you think about the way that show presents lesbians?

My sig is from The L Word. So needless to say, I watched it quite religiously as it being the only thing on TV that was striving to portray a diverse group of lesbians.
My favorite characters are and I usually catch a lot of flak for this, but I liked Jenny (well at least until the end that is). And like most lezzies, I had a huge crush on Shane, but Helena...I ended up liking her too. A lot of the characters I liked a lot, so it's hard to say, but Jenny + Shane....my combo right there.
I think it did a pretty OK job of portraying lesbians (and bisexuals), no show is ever going to be perfect at representing one type of group, so they did okay. Then sometimes with the show, some things were just left in the air and never explained like....what was up with Alice's pill problem?
But I don't have a lot of friends who are lesbians, I think I'm the only one in my circle of friends, so the show was nice to have to at least see my lifestyle reflected on TV to a certain degree.
It did break down some stereotypes, like the notion that lesbians only wear flannel and have no fashion sense whatsoever, and I'm glad it addressed the legal issues of adoption.

I liked it...
I liked Shane for a while, but Bette stole my heart I really love her character....and she's hot... and I loved Helena too! (she's also hot) I don't think I truly disliked any of the main charas...
Hmm... I think my favorite seasons are the first four.... It's all great, and I loved the song choice used in so many scenes. Yaay! Peaches!

I guess I'm just not really into the drama. I watched some episodes and I definitely have a crush on Kate Moenig, but I liked Exes & Ohs on Logo much better. Apparently bisexuals aren't portrayed well on it, but I haven't really seen enough of the show to form an opinion about it.

I like the first couple of seasons and then after season three I haven't made it back to the show. I was just a little mad about Dana, and that was my last straw. I do like Shane. I like Alice. And I really really really liked Marina and wish to the gods in heaven they had handled her character's exit from the show better. You know, in a way that made sense for the character and wasn't pulled out of a writer's ass. I mean... really.
I've never been able to get behind Bette or Jenny.
Oh and I miss Carmen. I liked her character, not the relationships she got herself into.

I didn't start to like Jenny until the very seasons I didn't like...
I agree about Marina, I feel like something was definitely lacking in that exit....

I'm ashamed to say that being one, I've never actually seen it.

Le Gasp! (wasn't that a well known forum-thread on Gaia??) you haven't seen it? Ah well, it's cool. You should check it out if you feel inclined to.

I will, as soon as I find a place other than YouTube to watch it.

I think I would have liked The L Word more if I didn't watch Queer as Folk before - that show has more humour and sex. There are two things I don't like:
a) Tina - gosh, she's an egoistic bi-curious housewife with no interests, statements or character. The only thing she's good at is complaining.
b) cool charactes vanish in a stupid way - Carmen, Marina. They were interesting, beautiful and significant so I don't get it. Plus, Marina's disappearing was so not like her.
Well, I even liked Jenny in a second season and in a third one. She was the character who said 'Sorry' five times in first episode. How could I like her then? My favourite character there is Bette. She's beautiful, strong and fascinating. She's an amazing combo of hotness and intelligence. Plus, I understand her.
I really liked Alice too. My favourite couple was Shane and Carmen - they were perfect together. The last episode of the third season torn my heart.
Oh, and I enjoyed music from the show. Unfortunately not every song is in OSTs.

I remember the first time I saw this show was in a lesbian bar (a friend who's a dyke takes me there sometimes). I looked up at the tv, then down at the actual club, back and forth several times and thought..."One of these things is not like the other, not like the other, not like the other..."

Oh, The L Word
I had just come off of a year-long obsession with Queer as Folk when I heard about this spiffy show where all the characters were lesbians, and I thought, "Hey, that's awesome!" My library had the first couple of seasons on DVD so I checked them out.
It started out mediocre and just got worse as it went on. Season one was OK, it wasn't anything special, but it kept me entertained. I slogged through Season two because Alice/Dana amused me. And then Season Three rolled around and well, ::spoiler:: all I can say is R.I.P Dana ::spoiler:: After that, I just watched it for the soft-core porn. That, and Jenny's slow descent into madness.
It had its moments, but as my roommate says, "I'm not digging through a pile of shit to find a perfectly good piece of corn."

This explains my relationship with the L Word perfectly. Most of the characters started to annoy the fuck out of me very quickly, so I can't say I was really attached to the plot and show. Buuuut, if you want to watch a tv show about lesbians this is pretty much it. And if you don't take it too seriously, it's a fun show.
My biggest issue with it is, like a lot of gay film, it portrays LBGT people as being promiscuous, slutty, and dramawhores. For me, that's the biggest hurdle to get past when it comes to liking this show.
(Edit: Just wanted to add that, despite all of my bitching, I was hardcore lusting after Jenny in the first few seasons. Jesus, she's hot.)

And an issue it is. I never took the show so seriously, it was afterall a drama that encorporated a large amount of comedy.
I think people tend to take the negative connotations and flip them for their own advantage, never realizing how they are adding to the stereotype.

I set it to record on my DVR ages ago, but whatever channel it's on seems to only air it once a week... Is there anywhere else that airs it more often?

Most of the seasons of the L Word should now be on DVD, so you can always try renting the show instead.

I used to love the show too, season 2 and 3 are the best in my opinion. But new characters kept being introduced while audience did not get the change to know the older ones (aside from the main cast) better.
I hated the repeated appearance of BETTY.
I didn't like to see Dana died (she and Alice were the perfect comical lesbian couple!).
The part where Shane walked out of the wedding was expected. However, I did not expect to see Carmen totally disappeared from the show just like that. So I was left wondering where was the proper farewell scene (where Carmen beat the crap out of Shane and then wave goodbye, or finish off their previous lapdance that was cut short by Jenny).
The last two seasons of the show really weren't that interesting to watch. In fact, the last season was total crap. Shane in particular had turned into a person whose sole purpose of existance was to have sex. The part where she and Jenny became a couple was....so wrong. Jenny for her part had transformed into a complete bitch. And what's up with the final episode? Yes, Jenny died, so what happened afterward?
At the end, the L Word is a very disappointing show.

I watched The L Word religiously when it was on Showtime and own most seasons on DVD. A soap opera with lesbians, the show was at most times completely over the top but that was what I liked about it. Lends for endless discussion about what the writers are smoking or whether the writers had actually seen previous seasons of the show. And betting on when Jenny would be sent to the mental ward.
But in the end you gotta love the core characters Shane, Alice, Bette, Tina and Kit (girl!) and those actresses are the reason I stuck with the show. Unlike most here, I liked Season 5 the best because Bette and Tina really figured themselves and each other out and demonstrated that their characters actually had an arc, Tina going from a mamby pamby in Season 1 to a self-aware, sel-fulfilled person that could be a partner with Bette in Season 5, and Bette learning to share a partnership and not to be so self-centered. But, yes, the ending sucked. Season 6 is not even worth watching and I would say, seriously detracts from the show. I recommend stopping after Season 5. But then we wouldn't have gotten to see Lucy Lawless in her cop outfit, hmmmmm.
BTW, watching Queer As Folk on DVD and loving it. Good lesbian couple on that show as well.

I miss Marina.... and also I wish it were a bit more light-hearted at times. The drama is overwhelming some seasons and it isn't broken up much with comedy...except for Alice. I think she's probably my favorite character.
