This is a static copy of In the Rose Garden, which existed as the center of the western Utena fandom for years. Enjoy. :)
YAYAYAYAYAYA!!
we can have a dungeons and dragons thread! although im not too sure about how well it will do...
i have actually been playing for only 2 and a half years. i am a PC and a DM! exciting.
i only became a DM cause my BF has been a DM most of the 5 years hes been playing.
i thoughts on that... DMing is for those with patience for the rules, players and themselves...which io have none of.
so POST AWAY PLEASE!!! it could be fun!

I've always wanted to do D&D . . . but for all the wrong reasons.
Offline
What reasons are those? D&D is great fun, no matter why you play it.

Combigning thoughts of Utena and D&D give me images of a party of duelists attacking a gazebo... Or maybe Akio buried in Mountain Dew....
Offline
That made me laugh way more than it should have. Thank you.

DM: You see something in the arena. It's an underclasswoman in a boyish uniform.
Saionji: I waste her with my crossbow!
DM: You don't HAVE a crossbow!
Touga: Can I make a charisma roll to seduce her?
DM: You fail.
Touga: Dammit! She must be a dyke!
Miki: Is she shining?
DM: No.
Juri: What is she carrying?
DM: A shinai.
Saionji: I waste her with my Rose Bride!
Anthy: I summon the Sword of Dios.
DM: *rolling behind screen* You succeed!
Saionji: I attack the little dyke and destroy her shinai!
DM: You succeed, but miss her rose.
Saionji: Dammit!
Utena: I make my Summon roll. *displays dice*
DM: Excellent. Dios drops down from the castle and you don't remember anything for a few seconds. Saionji, your rose is destroyed.
Saionji: What? Don't I even get to roll a saving throw?
Touga: Aw, sucks to be you, dude. Can I try my charisma again?
Offline
....we need to do that with the entire series.
It's like the thumbnail theater but worse.

Touga: I make my grab roll!
DM: Touga sweeps you up onto the back of his horse.
Utena: Crappity! Put me down, you idjit!
Touga: No way! You love me and you know it! *rolls Charisma* Read 'em and weep.
Utena: Sizzling crap on a stick. All right, I'm dazzled.
DM: Touga, make a riding roll. You're coming up on a tree fallen over the path.
Touga: Easy-peasy and... shit. I botched.
DM: Utena, you're falling ass over teakettle off the back of the horse.
Utena: I'm gonna kill you, Kiryuu.
Akio: Make me a suave roll, DM!
DM: *rolls, sighs* All right, you make your suave roll, Akio.
Akio: I catch Utena before she falls into the rose bush!
Juri: Like there are anything BUT rose bushes on this campus.
DM: *rolls* So, you catch her. Do you sling her over the saddle like a sack of flour or what?
Akio: Of course not! I sweep her up so her butt's on the saddle and, coincidentally on...
Utena: I do NOT want to hear this.
DM: Okay, you've got her. I guess YOU want to make a Charisma roll too?
Akio: Of course. *rolls* Why look, I happen to have made a spectacular success.
Miki: When you're rolling THAT many dice, how could you not?
Juri: Twink.
DM: Utena, you're utterly dazzled by his Princeliness.
Utena: I /knew/ I should've bought more damn Willpower when I was making this character.

Oh god... this is hilariousness in itself

XD
awesome!
i imagine they would be in a low level campaign though..like level 7 or something to that effect..but it would suck cause they would all probably go into the duellist prestige class...

I realized that the second one was using more White Wolf terminology than D&D, really. But that's okay. I thought of the RoleMaster version:
GM: Okay, Saionji, roll on the Rapier Chart. Utena, roll on the Shinai Chart.
Saionji: *rolls* Okay, I hit, severed her femoral artery, and she takes 7 points of damage per turn. Plus I did a C Puncture Crit!
GM: Let me find the Puncture Crit Chart. Here. Roll.
Saionji: *rolls* I, well, I guess I poked a hole through her chest. She's having problems breathing and is stunned for 3 rounds.
GM: Utena? How did you do on the Shinai Chart?
Utena: *stares at the dice* Well, I rolled a fumble.
GM: Let me break out the Fumble Chart. You're using a crushing weapon, so...
Utena: *rolls* An E crit.
GM: Okay, here's the Fumble Crit Chart for Crushing...
Utena: *rolls* 100.
Saionji: *reads over her shoulder* 'Fetch a mop.'
Akio: *facepalms* Well, back to the drawing board.
Miki: *patting Utena on the shoulder* It's all right. Yesterday, I fumbled my tooth brushing roll and blew out the back of my skull.
GM: *tosses books over shoulder* Right. NEW GAME SYSTEM.

I've played D&D for years and years, but almost always it's just me and my brother, or us two and one other. My brother doesn't have much interest in DMing, though he's very good at it, which means I have DM'd almost exclusively since the beginning. I daresay I've gotten pretty good at it. I attribute this partly to the informal rule I live by: "If looking up the answer to the rules question is going to take more than thirty seconds, I make up the answer on the spot." More generally: "Don't hesitate to ignore the rules." What's the range increment on a thrown beer bottle? Who the hell knows? I don't even know where to begin looking for that. Combat? Equipment? Maybe Skills? Screw that. We'll call it a -2 penalty to hit.
This is only possible because my players are tractable. They keep their ego to manageable levels, and they realize that keeping the game moving is a good thing. If I had a large group that contained rules lawyers or people predisposed to think the DM is out to get them, I'd throw my hands up in frustration half an hour in. So... you can be a good DM and still have no patience for the rules, provided you have the right play group

It all depends on the group of players and how they interact. In my current groups, we get along well and generally accept what the DM says because we want the game to happen. Our only problem within the group doesn't have a thing to do with rule lawyering.

ROFLMAO.
Juri calling Akio a twink has just made my day.
Seriously... Akio is the ultimate min maxer. And a charisma based character no less!

Akio's twinking is much more appealing than Red Mage's, that's for sure.

True.... I think we should try an Utena game using the D20 rules for munchkin... I mean... Seriously.... Munchkin!

... I don't know crap about crap.
It is. Munchkin also has a D20 variant with some really silly additional rules and such. I really should have just suggested D20, since Munchkin is more like an expansion, but it just seemed like so much fun to sugest Utena Munchkin.

I've never played D20 Munchkin. I have, however, played D20 games with munchkins.

Those are like D&D for Dummies, I just learned more about the game than piles and piles of books taught me!
Twink is a word I'm very familiar with, and it was the first thing I thought of when approached with the idea of Akio playing any manner of RPG. But I was thinking my crappy computer games. Having 800 SoJs in Diablo 2 or dual-boxing Everquest. I'm glad to see there are equivalent behaviors in pen and paper rpgs.
Actually I'm not. I really hate twinks, unless I'm twinking and doing better.
Offline
There are twinks in every form of RPG. And anyone with 800 SoJs deserves to die a horrible and firy death.
