This is a static copy of In the Rose Garden, which existed as the center of the western Utena fandom for years. Enjoy. :)

I was interested in Harry Potter at first, but then JK Rowling started turning it into an angst-fest, and I quickly lost any desire to follow it through to the end. The humorous cliche of the horrible step parents and all the fun magical antics at the beginning just didn't sit well with the kind of teen drama that followed. There was no balance and no comfortable medium. I don't think she's a bad writer, and I appreciate what she did for the fantasy genre-- pulling it even further into the mainstream-- but her work does have its faults, and I just couldn't enjoy the later installments.
Well I don't know about you, but the angst goes with the plot of the story. I mean the very first chaptre in the very first book was not the happiest of occasions. Unless ones parents being brutally murdered and you are left on the door step of an extension of your family that loaths you at birth. And Harry is greatly affected by that, of course not in the beginning because of his innocence, but as the years go by and the death toll rises . . . especially the death of his God-Father . . . it gets to him.
Well, it's totally subjective. I just feel that at first, the series had a sufficient balance between its humor and its drama, and it eventually began a slippery slope toward ALL or nearly all drama, and way too many series are guilty of that (Fushigi Yuugi and Trigun being good examples). It went from, "Hey, this is pretty fun" to "I'm not having fun anymore." But then, I really, really can't stand drama if it's not tastefully balanced with other elements. I think there's maybe one or two exceptions to this for me (Utena being one, because it's just so good), but that's pretty much how I feel.

I really liked the realism of the whole series. The wizarding world seems really wacky at first but then you realize it has most of the same ills as ours. Harry was living the reality of war and conflict and ruined lives while his brother chortled over his Mega-Mutilation video games.

Oh, I do have a random conversational question. When you heard the story about the Hallows, which did you automatically want, and why, if you want to answer? Be honest, plz. D
Well if i would not get my self killed in the process i would go for the wand and take over some island and do what the fuck i want. But because i know that some how that fucking wand would get me killed i would take the invisibility cloak and steal things

Beat me to the punch, Raven. I was going to post this. Oh well, will anyway because I read a different news story. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20071020/ap_ … _HOdeuGL8C
I love her amusement with fandom.

Hehe, I think it's cool she's taking it positively. There's nothing anyone really do against fandoms. ;P
Abd I've finally started reading Harry Potter. Yay spoilers!

That's good news. I like Dumbledore even a bit more now

Wow, I can hardly believe that. And no revelations about the obvious couple - Harry & Draco!

Excuse me! Remus & Sirius is waaaaaaay more obvious
Ah, the fandom

I am SO writing something on that. It is interesting, though. I wonder what other characters have big secrets like that? I'm still going for Bellatrix/Voldemort as lovers.
But it's hard, since they never called to light another infinitely discussed theory...

They're all exactly the same person. Think about it.

Well, I have never seen the three of them in the same place at the same time..

This makes Dumbledore more like a human being, not a god. And I like that, a lot.

Why can't a god be gay?

You know, I think I agree that this makes Dumbledore feel more human. Not because he's gay specifically, but because he's a sexual being. I think I'd feel about the same way if Rowling had revealed Dumbledore had a crush on McGonagall. But of course his homosexuality introduces an extra component or two. Did he have to keep his feelings secret? Did he have trouble accepting this side of himself? These are problems gods don't have to confront.

I... I'm too happy for words.
And this makes Ian McKellen freaking PERFECT for the part, on top of just that he can pull off happy a little bit better than Mister "HAY GUYZ IM IN GOZFURD PARK LOLZ" and is an amazing actor in general. Screw getting typecast as an old wizard! He could save those movies, as would Emma Watson acquiring breasts and a soul.
Gah! Humanizing Dumbledore was my favorite part of the last book. This is the icing on the cake.

God is a gay, black communist Jew. That is all.

A gay, black communist Jew woman, perhaps?

I think it makes Dumbledore more human because he loved, and that love wasn't fairy-tale perfect.
I just feel that it's kind of...trite...for her to reveal this in a way that wasn't ever in the books themselves. Like it's safe to reveal that Dumbledore loved his friend now that the books are over and there won't be any uproar from parental groups or such because of the "the big gay reveal" scene. There won't be any outrage about having to explain to little nine-year old Suzie why Dumbledore and his friend were holding hands.

Well, it wasn't really important to the plot of the books. I think she's better off having left it out, because it wouldn't have made the story better at all. It just would have created controversy for no reason.

Yeah, I know. It's true that's not essential.
But mentioning it now that it is over doesn't help, since unless you are told of her interview, a reader of the books will never know.

True... I don't think it's that important, though. It's one of those little things that real fans like to dig up and find out, like Akio's birthday and sun signs. It doesn't mean anything to the story, but it's something fans will find out and cherish as a new dimension to a character they love.

Dumbledore's homosexuality, though not key to the plot, is a great depth-enhancer.
There's now so much more to his relationship with Grindelwald and the angst of his young adult years.
Edit: Imagine if we didn't know that Juri was in love with Shiori. What if all we knew was that there was a boy that Shiori thought she liked who she stole away and now Juri felt bitter about it? I doubt we'd feel as enamored with their characters if that were so. Admittedly, in SKU it's a make-or-break plot point, but it's still a vaguely similar situation.
Teh ghey also adds some more sting to those Daily Prophet articles about his unhealthy relationship with Harry.
Most importantly, it rules out a romantic relationship with McGonagal, leaving Hagrid as her only option.
