This is a static copy of In the Rose Garden, which existed as the center of the western Utena fandom for years. Enjoy. :)
So I've been having a mechathon lately: VOTOMS, Getter, Five Star Stories, Muv Luv, EVA, Gasaraki...
Then I heard Nagano and Ikuhara actually worked together (FUCK YEA) in a series of mecha novels.
So I'm wondering: if we took out the swords from everything, and replaced them with mecha, which would they be?
For instance, I can totally see Utena piloting a RahXephon Mirage LED. Or screw it, just give her the fucking Knight of Gold.
As for the Two Alphas and the Trap of all Traps (Brouga, Saionji the Otaku and Miki), I nominate all incarnations of the Getter.
Juri would use a LED Mirage because lady's got class.
(No image because they're all in Gears and I can't hotlink from there)
Anthy...Anthy would use something sinister. Maybe Demonbane.
>Lovecraftian mecha
>linked with the Elder Gods
>muh Lovecraftian lolis
>weird shit happens everywhere
10/10, perfect waifu for Anthy

If we took the swords from Utena and replaced them with mecha, we'd wind up with Star Driver, except with a better sound track.

Neon Genesis Evangelion.

I can see Utena piloting Gundam Nadleeh:
It's usually encased in this very bulky mecha that goes by the name of Virtue; Nadleeh is a secret feature that is activated once Virtue purges its armor. It serves as a trump card of sorts, very much like the Power of Dios descending upon Utena mid-duel.
And as Gundam wiki states, 'The name "Nadleeh" comes from the Navajo word meaning "Two-Spirit", a reference to the female figure hidden within the male.' Again it's a bit like the Power of Dios albeit gender inverted.
Then there is a fact that the ultimate trap Tieria Erde is the pilot but that's a whole different story.
Mark Nicht, from Fafner, would be Mikage's unit:
Like the name implies, Nicht is connected to nothingness. For a long time it was kept apart as a forbidden mecha that could very well destroy the world.
Zearth from Bokurano is either Akio or Ruka's:

Schell Bullet. I have the 'soundtrack' they did, it had a couple pretty sweet tracks.
I really wanna go with Evangelion but the entire cast repetitively entering their mothers is just more than I think I can handle.

Muv Luv, really tho?

Utena, but with mecha? This:
Kannazuki no Miko. Not coincidentally it is, along with Utena, another of the of the most legendary yuri anime of all time.

Oh hey, wasn't one of this forum's people in the English dub of Muv-Luv: Total Eclipse? I think they played Guylos, The Master, and some extras.

When I saw this I thought more of "come up with ideas for original mechas fitting the cast", actually. Like, for each duelist - and the black rose duelists would of course steal the mechs. And in the movie Utena turns into Anthy's mech.
There's lots of room for symbolism here, due to how detailed you can make a mecha compared to a sword.

I think there was something like that in the game.
It was only there for a few seconds, but it sort of fits. Kind of.
