This is a static copy of In the Rose Garden, which existed as the center of the western Utena fandom for years. Enjoy. :)
There doesn't seem to be a general purpose "Hey look at all this amazing new music I just discovered!" thread. So here you can post about concerts, your man crush on Sully Erna, your orgasmic experience of listening to A Perfect Circle the first time, those Elliott Smith lyrics that just speak about your life so perfectly... Etc.
I went to a show this Friday featuring indie artists Strand of Oaks and Jason Anderson. Check 'em out if you love anything acoustic (for Strand of Oaks)/Bruce Springsteen-esque (for Jason Anderson). I'm also listening to Sharon Van Etten lately. I have too many favorite musicians to post them all here. Tool, A Perfect Circle, Tori Amos, PJ Harvey, Elliott Smith, Gogol Bordello, Azure Ray, Tegan and Sara, The Smiths, Amanda Palmer, Tom Waits, Ani DiFranco, Emily Haines & the Soft Skeleton, Bjork, Belle and Sebastian, Sleater-Kinney, Cat Power. I like both mainstream alternative artists and indie musicians. I like French pop (Emilie Simon) and Japanese electronica (The Suzan). Music is the life that runs in my veins and music reminds me that I am human. I couldn't live without it!
Also, live music can be better than porn. Case in point: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nkH-OyoB … re=related
Do you love music? Here's your place to talk about it!

I'm way too eclectic with my music tastes right now. Pursuing a lot of different leads that are going nowhere. Most of this stuff I can't even torrent, and I don't have a Canadian credit card to order things online while I'm out here at school, and back home in the US, I mean, I don't want to just order stuff and then have to ship it up. Sigh.
For starters, while I usually am not into J-music in general, I've really liked Heartsdales, more than anything because a lot of their sound is kind of a throwback to 90s hiphop. I mean, who would've thought ten years ago that Left Eye would be dead today and we'd be turning to the Japanese for much the same sound? This is one of their collabs with Kumiko Koda; I'd link something that's just theirs but it's all AMVs. Can't find a seeded torrent anywhere and I don't think I'll find their stuff in stores in Calgary.
Also, Youtube hopping led me to this Rhythm Device video from the late 80s in Belgium, which is at once both quite interesting and good music and the most literally homosexual thing I've ever seen, up to and including gay porn spam on /b/. 80s Belgium must have been a weird place. But so now that's gotten me into looking up them, and Tragic Error, and A Split Second, the whole New Beat set.
Finally, been listening to a lot of theCasualtiesand some other punk stuff lately (a lot of the classic big names, Dead Kennedys, Sex Pistols, Misfits(great video btw)), and I'm starting to go back and explore some of their UK82 inspirations, like Charged GBH and The Exploited.

I went to Next Big Thing in Tampa yesterday. Bands worth remembering are Neon Trees (fantastic sound live), Sick Puppies (holy shit stage presence), and The Black Keys. Cage the Elephant was incredibly disappointing as the lead singer was WASTED out of his MIND. The Dirty Heads were . . . okay. Switchfoot performed early in the day and I'm not really a fan of them, but they performed a killer cover of Sabotage by The Beastie Boys.
All in all, lots of fun and I discovered a few new bands I wouldn't have given a try otherwise.

I've really been into Metric as of late because of a recommendation from a good friend of mine. I really like their sound - it's unique and good at the same time.
Offline
Metric is actually one of my favorite bands. Really clean sound, great lyrics and come on, Emily Haines has some great vocals.
I love Yeah Yeah Yeahs (I liked them before Rock Band! ), Show Your Bones is such a fantastic CD.
Other favorites include New Pornographers, Florence and the Machine, the Cardigans, City and Colour, Arctic Monkeys, Stars, and Bat for Lashes. F+tM and Bat for Lashes I both found through this forum, while everything else was referred to from other friends. However, Dragonette I stumbled upon, and holy crap, their stuff with Kaskade and Martin Solveig is just phenomenal.
Then there is deadmau5. HOLY MAN.

Saw Metric last year live, they were the bees knees; Emily is fantastic live.
Ever heard of Emily Haines and the Soft Skeleton? I love "Our hell", the video is pretty damn cool as well.
Youtube: Our Hell
I'm going through a "top five" favorite artists relapse right now, so I haven't been actively seeking anything new that BLOWS my mind, but I'll recap what I have found these past couple of years.
Boys Noize:
I reccommend Jeffer and "& Down"
Kavinsky:
Testarossa Autodrive (sebastiAn remix)
Weep (Doc Hammer's band):
Lay There and Drown
Shut up and Drive (Yes, it's a cover of a Rihanna song; only like, 10x better!)
Robyn:
If you the get the chance, listen to Body Talk I & II, they're fantastic!
Hang With Me
Who's that Girl? (this song is my mantra when dealing with men)
Curve:
Before Gwen Stefani and Shirley Manson, there was Toni Halliday, Curve's lead singer.
Horror Head
Ten Little Girls
Familjen:
The Family in Swedish, and quite a prodigious artist.
Det snurrar i min skalle (It's spinning in my head)
Nu händer det igen (It's all happening again)
THERE ARE TONS MORE, but my arm is starting to cramp so I'll just post the names:
Zeitgeist-The Jade Motel (album)
Ryoksopp-What Else is There?(song)
Simian Mobile Disco- Temporary Pleasure (album)
Crazy Loop- Johanna (Shut Up) [song]
And we can't forget Kraftwerk and everything they have ever done.
You wanna hear where today's artists get their mixes. Listen to Kraftwerk.
There, I just took out all the guesswork and years of wondering where "that hook" came from. Hell, even the mighty Daft Punk bows before the almighty Kraftwerk.
With that in mind, I'll leave you with this. Kanye West IS a cad, yes; but the guy has a certain precociousness in his genre of music that's magentizing.

I hope you'll forgive me, but this is the best typo I've seen in a month. I wish I knew Photoshop so I could turn Kanye bright purple for you.
I don't think about music very much -- probably less than anyone else I know. I've been learning about it more recently because I've been playing Rock Band 3, which has taught me a few basic facts about rock music (e.g. no one wants to play the guitar solo in "Free Bird"). I've enjoyed a lot of those songs, as my iTunes purchasing history will testify, but I mostly listen to singer-songwriter music of the folk-to-folk-rock type that most people want nothing to do with. Leonard Cohen, Suzanne Vega, the Indigo Girls, and to a lesser extent Paul Simon are the standbys that I'm always happy to see come up on my iTunes random shuffle. These are people I respect as artists and performers, and their music touches me in a way usually reserved for really good poetry.
I've been broadening my musical horizons, though, mostly thanks to my brother, who's taught me about a few alternative rock bands I enjoy blasting on occasion. I still haven't reached the point where I can follow any of y'all's name-drops, except for Kanye, who I know because of South Park, and a few of Likey's likeys: Ani diFranco and Tori Amos are artists I remember digging, and I've been meaning to acquaint myself with Amanda Palmer. I wish someone would release Rock Band Songs You've Been Meaning To Listen To.

Oh trust me that statement was intentional. Precocious: of or pertaining to premature development. He's more advanced in his mix skills that many of his counterparts. Although, T.I can bust a sweet rhyme.

I LOVE music and concerts! It keeps me going, no matter what happens. If you guys happen to have last.fm, feel free to invite me as your friend: http://www.lastfm.pl/user/dlaire. I'm curious how our comparison would look like. Like_Autumn and Persephone, sounds like we have familiar tastes in music!
I've seen some of my favourite artists (such as Björk, Tori Amos, Antony and the Johnsons, CocoRosie, Massive Attack, Little Dragon, Lamb, Kasabian..) but I'm REALLY looking forward to seeing Bat for Lashes, Portishead, Gossip, Under Byen, The Knife, Röyksopp and múm. I hope I'll the opportunity to do that.
When I was 11 my brother discovered the joy of music and I was curious about everything he was into. I was just a kid when I heard for the very first time trip-hop music. Utopia by Goldfrapp, Eple by Röyksopp, Winter by Tori Amos, Bachelorette by Björk..
This Friday I will see Robots in Disguise live and I hope I'll hear DIY and Turn it up there.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yedD4JsZyT0 Here's Little Dragon's song called Twice. I hope you'll like it.

Oh yes, she's wonderful! My favorite song is "Crowd Surf Off A Cliff," but that whole album is a joy to listen to. I love her songwriting and how many different interpretations the songs can have. "Detective Daughter" is a really interesting one. I still have no idea what exactly it means.

Wow, we do have similar tastes! I wish I could have a chance to see Tori Amos or Bjork live! Soooo jealous. I like Antony & the Johnsons, and I also love Gossip. I'm not on last.fm. Maybe I should be.
Haha, I love "Likey's likeys." Thanks for that one, satyr! I enjoy some folk rock on occasion. You might like Strand of Oaks, a very indie acoustic folk musician. His album Leave Ruin is simple but gorgeous. I'm especially fond of him because I saw him perform live and he brought me to tears.

YES TO ALL OF THESE. I have a secondary Last.fm account built around Gossip, Bat for Lashes, and Florence + the Machine. It wound up morphing into an indie, semi-European station with electroclash leanings. Check out Marina & the Diamonds, Little Boots, and the Noisettes.

MUSIC THREAD HECK YEAH!
Thanks to my dad's influence, I've been a music geek since early childhood. I grew up on a strict diet of classic rock: The Beatles, Billy Joel, Pink Floyd, Fleetwood Mac, and an assortment of oddities like Genesis and Natalie Merchant. The first band I can remember getting into by myself was Incubus. I've been to see them in concert once, and they really are the sort of band that's much, much better live. I can't say I'm too fond of their albums post Morning View, but their older, funkier stuff still gets regular rotation on the old mp3 player.
Recently, when I realized my music collection was a big sausage fest, I started checking out more female artists. Tori Amos is freaking brilliant (though I seem to be in the minority for thinking Boys for Pele is her weakest album), Amanda Palmer's a lyrical wizard, and Emilie Autumn is deliciously gothic. I love acoustic guitar, so Tracy Chapman and The Indigo Girls rate high as well.
I've been diving down the rabbit hole of metal too, where there's a wealth of great bands: Death, Opeth, Abigail Williams, Darkthrone, Burzum, and my personal favorite sunn o))), who don't make music so much as horrifying ambient sound.
I've got to say though, my music loving heart is always going to belong to The Magnetic Fields. My eighth grade history teacher introduced me to them, and I've loved them for nearly ten years. Stephen Merrit writes such clever, cynical lyrics and although the music he makes is technically pop, it's wonderfully subversive and gloomy. They use lots of unusual instruments too, from banjos and accordions to xylophones and squeak toys for percussion.
Other favorites, in no particular order: Dream Theater, The National, Alanis Morisette, Tom Waits, Immortal Technique, Voltaire, The Decemberists, Bjork, Kings of Leon, Miles Davis, Neil Young, Jethro Tull, Judy Collins, The Yoshida Brothers...come to think of it, it'd probably be quicker to list the music I don't like. I'm not a huge fan of techno, current rap or pop, and I HATE HATE HATE autotune. Singers with too much vibrato annoy me as well, hence my lack of interest in "emo" music.

Genesis is my alltime favorite band. All of it, from the Peter Gabriel years to Phil Collins and beyond. I take "oddity" as a compliment to them.
Porcupine Tree is my other alltime favorite band.

"Deliverance" is my favorite Opeth song... oh that outro!
Rather than try to describe everything I enjoy, just take a peek at my last.fm profile. (Be advised I'm currently in Christmas music mode, but the Top 50 charts further down will give you a good idea of what I listen to.)

You know, I'm really not the Japanese Idol Girl-Pop Group type, but AKB48 has produced some pretty badass singles lately.
Beginner - Definitely my favorite of the three. Really good, upbeat song, without getting too cheesy.
Alive - Great guitar riffs, great song.
And an older one that I still like:
River - Honestly I hate the beginning, oh god it's terrible in my opinion. But the rest of the song makes up for it.

I'm starting to listen to whole albums again, after who knows how long of just letting iTunes randomize, unless I was listening to something for work or critique purposes. 'S'weird. I'd forgotten, basically, that there really was an era where songs were sequenced not necessarily into concept albums but to build up on each other aurally. And, it's like, How did I forget that? Listening to the entirety of Hellbilly Deluxe or Saint Dominic's Preview truly is more than the sum of the parts.

Anyone have any good concept/story albums to recommend?
I'm reconciling my love of concept albums and narrative albums with a world that overall hates and fears them (or picks one that is "like mind-blowing man, there's a whole story and there's characters and mind-blowing man!"). The P-Funk mythology, the story of the Redheaded Stranger, or songs on a theme albums like Blood on the Tracks or 69/96. Mayday's Smash and Grab is the best gorilla-fighting, zombie-killing, Imma walk around Florida waving a sword and y'all better come fight with me action movie that isn't a movie but an album. The Who Sell Out. The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust..., Wee Small Hours, Street Fight! A Street Fighter Musical.
Just that there's a Street Fighter musical, but it's interesting and catchy, too? A story that actually holds together and seems to go somewhere? Character development? (Balrog's such a punk.)

Manson's Triptych-- in order of "story", Holy Wood, Mechanical Animals, and Antichrist Superstar.
No one will agree except Frosty! I regret nothing!
Edit for lovely quote that may have elements in common with other notable properties we sometimes touch on:
Manson wrote:
"[Holy Wood is about] wanting to fit into a world that didn't want me, and fighting really hard to get there. [The album's deepest elements] are idealism and the desire to start a revolution. If you begin with Holy Wood, the Mechanical Animals really talks about how that revolution gets taken away from you and turned into a product, and then Antichrist Superstar is where you're given a choice to decide if you're going to be controlled by the power that you created or if you want to destroy yourself and then start over. It just becomes a cycle."
