This is a static copy of In the Rose Garden, which existed as the center of the western Utena fandom for years. Enjoy. :)
Now here's something to think about. Anthy trying to kill herself. I thought it be an interesting topic to discuss. Her appearance, first of all, I'd be thinking the top of her rose bride dress (only black) and white pants? Then, to think, what she's so angry to herself about? Maybe she's full of regret and anger at herself for letting herself be treated like "it",like an object. Her symbolization, a rose?A red rose to symbolize her being the Rose Bride. Then,to come her sword....the Sword of Dios. Would she wield it from herself,or Utena? Probably Herself seeing she's against her. But then, what about Utena? Would she draw her sword against Anthy? I wouldn't expect that seeing as how she didn't for Wakaba. Utena refused to draw her sword and clearly stated,"I can't draw my sword against a friend....".
A Spinning Red Rose, seen quite often in the series, obviously Himemiya's symbolization if she were a Black Rose Duelist, only an actual rose instead
Himemiya Drawing the Sword From Utena
Himemiya as Rose Bride (Oh no Himemiya there's a car behind you,run away!)
Himemiya:Upon the Black Rose, I swear to win this duel and kill the rose bride...(Is that said correctly??)
Utena: Hime....miya?.....*surprised*
Himemiya in a Coffin
Himemiya Angry
Obviously Himemiya is surrounded by roses, her symbol for being the Rose Bride

OT: I never noticed how different Anthy looks in the movie compared to the series. Her skin is much lighter in the movie.

Maybe she got a tan....

Honestly, movie-Anthy is the only version of Anthy that actually looks Indian. Her bindi just wasn't enough in the series.

I guess you could say that Himemiya is a Black Rose duellist in the series, if only in the sense that she attempted (pretended ) suicide... although she never got a seminar from Mikage...
Interesting idea, though. I'll have to think about the what-if.

Does she really hope to accomplish what the declared purpose of the Black Rose duellists was or was she just using them to further her own (or Akio's) ends?

Assuming that the Black Rose duels were actually engineered by Akio and Anthy and also assuming that all these duels Utena has been set up to fight since childhood are a part of a ritualistic super-spell that requires certain things to happen in certain ways, I wonder if the fact that in Utena's duel with Wakaba, the fact that Utena failed to use the Sword of Dios, if that would have damaged the Revolution Spell somehow?

...that's so conspiracy theory my head hurts.

That would depend on how readily the spell adapts. Because Akio really does have all the time in the world.

There's also the possibility that Mikage and the Black Rose Duels were engineered by Anthy and Anthy alone in secret in order to get herself killed. The reason why it ultimately turned out the way it did is because of Akio's influence over Anthy.
There's a small difference between wanting to kill yourself and having a death wish. Maybe after Anthy realised there was no way she could just have herself killed she tried suicide in a fit of despiration.

I'm not so sure it was a plot by Anthy to kill herself as in no stage was Anthy even close to being killed by any of the duellists and if I am not mistaken Anthy didn't even need to affect the results of the duel like she sometimes did in the first bunch of duels.

I used to like the idea of Utena having to duel Anthy but it wouldn't have worked.
I suppose throughout the series Utena & Anthy are having one long duel anyway.

That's a great point!

I think Anthy sort of hoped that one of those duelists would end her misery or that she'd try to become a Black Rose Duelist herself as a last resort. If she did she'd probably create some kind of new sword from the hatred and bitterness from within her soul.
