In the book the Mozi the writer talks about how one must master the basics in order to have any success. A warrior, for example, can learn reams of tactics, but before those things can be of any use, a he has to be brave. A scholar can read widely, but first he must learn to carry himself properly. Etc.
I think that this kind of thinking can be applied to pretty much any field of human endeavor.
The only one I can think of for now is this: a businessman can have connections and an instinct for efficiency, but none of that will mean anything if he doesn't have a product that people want.
