This is a static copy of In the Rose Garden, which existed as the center of the western Utena fandom for years. Enjoy. :)
I'm sorry if there was a thread like this before: this seems to be like the obligatory thread, but I didn't notice it while looking through the archives.
What songs?music is Utena associated with to you, notwithstanding the obvious soundtracks? What music could've made good AMV's?
Inspired by listening to Sopor Aeternus. I am very surprised that no one talented made any AMV's to this artist's work yet: some of the music and the lyrics match quite well. I'll post them best-matching here, and am curious about other associations.
Sopor Aeternus - Little Velveteen Knight
Infants like phantoms, denied and suspected, their existence discovered always when least expected. Prepared for the day, the knight, he just cannot keep the perfect mask in its place, when he is falling asleep. Faces slacken in slum ber, each rigid muscle relaxes, without warning the hidden child comes to the surface. From the deepest darkness, some unnameable place, of the tower inverted, forms a different face; climbing upwards with effort, to see through the eyes. ..- windows to the soul -now shut- are starring inside. And while the outside beholder sees the face of a child, this fearful and helpless infant turns to a wild beast inside: becomes the architect of the most terrible dreams and puts a crue l fears of death into our hero's sleep...
This child is a dragon, who you must strive to kill, though it defeated you once ... and, yes, it always will! Oh, little velveteen knight (and heroes of all kinds), endeavour to slay the dragon... (... and yourselves when you try)! Yes, this monster's immortal ... and your fight is in vain, it only will last forever, some monsters just cannot be slain. This infant's beast ..., and the dragon's its guardian, protecting his child, so that no-one can harm it, their most gruesome s hape puts the fear of death into our supposed (but velveteen) hero; yet, you must get me right: there is no choice for the child, its intentions are good and always upright. Tell me, why do you from?
Do you bear questions ... or doubt?
Have you not recognised that both, dragon and child, are in face more than kin...- they represent the same thing! And all our characters that you will see or seem are merely part of the dreamer ... and therefore the dream.

Pretty much anything in Blaqk Audio- Cex Cells. I will post some excerpts from the lyrics now.
Bitter For Sweet:
Can you tell me what stopped the rain
Where is salvation
Science, saviors, tragedy
May I lead the way
Into temptation
Sirens screaming just for me
And the void remains
Would you save, would you save my life
If you knew, if you knew why
This is the last time
I'm leaving without you
In silence, in silence
Could you save, could you save my life
Had the boy that you knew not lied
This is the last time
I'm leaving without you
In silence
In silence
On a Friday:
So let's cut clean to the sex scene.
Drop the white lines cuz no one is clean
And this beat won't wait for you.
Safe to say that you won't recall so,
Let's just pretend nothing happened at all.
Oh my love where's the danger?
All my life I'm dancing with strangers.
Did he want you?
Did you want to?
Did you question what they'd think of you
With a beat between your breaths?
So let's cut fast to the car crash
Where the future went down with the past
Cuz this beat won't wait for you.
Safe to say that I can't recall,
So let's just admit nothing matters at all.
Cities of Night:
Wait for a heart that never lies
But not this time
Watch those explosions in the sky
And you'll go blind,
But not this time.
Will you live in hope
Or dark desire?
What can I say?
Oh,
Fuck love, give me fire
Have you seen what I've made
Beneath the wreckage?
Just suffer through the dust
And there you'll find
The color of a night
That burned out from us
Surrounded by it's glow
Our city lies
Wait for a love that never dies
And you've lost life
One overdoes just to survive
We'll shine this time
We'll make headlines
There is more but I don't want to fill the forums with the whole of their lyrics.

"Gotta Knock a Little Harder" from the Cowboy Bebop movie for Anthy. The lyrics work well with the coffin/rose gate/etc imagery and all:
Always keepin' safe inside
Where no one ever had a chance
To penetrate or break in
Let me tell you some have tried
But I would slam the door so tight
That they could never get in
Kept my cool under a lock and key
And I never shed a tear
Another sign of my condition
Must repress my desire to make another Utena AMV.

Even since I first heard "When You Were Young" by The Killers, I can't shake the association with Utena; apparently, someone (no offense, but without the best aesthetic sense in the world) agreed enough to take the time to make an AMV to the song. It sort of makes me cringe, though, so I will refrain from linking you poor souls to it.
Here's the original, for the three of you who haven't heard the song:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=YxdrHbp6FzA
I just find that it screams Utena, what, with the its themes of untenable childhood idealism superimposed on imperfection, yadda yadda. Very Utena-Akio-Anthy in its implications.

I was actually going to bring that up. What if Utena was Jewish? Army of Lovers time! The swishy hips guy is Jean-Pierre. And if you thought that video was strange and the song catchy...
http://youtube.com/watch?v=vYT2aWavXlc
The great thing about that video is it has a bit of something for everyone. Straight girls and gay guys will like the pretty men, straight men and lesbians will love the ridiculously hot La Camilla, and it's a field day for bisexuals. (Oh, and Camilla's a lesbian. Double luck for the females.)

This might be stretching it a bit, but that song "Umbrella" by Rhianna makes me think of Keiko and Touga. ...Well, at least for the brief moment when Keiko thought she had a chance at being something special to him.
(I don't actually like that song, but I heard it at the gym today. )

One song that screams Utena to me is In The Death Car by Iggy Pop. And not just because it's about a car.

Kanae's mom has got it going on...
Kanae can't you see, you're just not the girl for me?
I know it might be wrong but I'm in love with Kanae's mom...
Sorry, while trying to think if there's any music I hear that actually makes me think of SKU (there isn't really), I somehow ended up with "Stacy's Mom" and Akio seducing Mrs. Ohtori blending in my mind... it made Paradox cringe!

You know, it's actually kind of sad... but I think that Mikage would be just perfect for Ursula's song, Poor Unfortunate Souls, from The Little Mermaid.
"I admit that in the past I've been nasty
They weren't kidding when they called me kinda strange
But you'll find that nowadays
I've mended all my ways
Repented, seen the light, and made a change
And I fortunately know a little secret
It's a talent that I always have possessed
And dear lady, please don't laugh
I use it on behalf
Of the miserable, the lonely, and depressed (pathetic)
Poor unfortunate souls
In pain
In need
This one longing to be thinner
That one wants to get the girl
And do I help them?
Yes, indeed!
Those poor unfortunate souls
So sad
So true
They come flocking to me crying
"Will you help us, pretty please?"
And I help them
Yes I do!"
In my defense, I've heard that The Jonas Brothers did a cover of that song, so I can get away with thinking of Mikage when a guy's singing it.

Dollface, that song is really Mikage-like.
Speaking of which, I was listening to Katatonia and it occurred to me that this song also reminds me a lot about Nemuro/Mikage
Dissolving Bonds
And here you are
So much time did you waste from times before
So shut down your sky
Bow down, lights out & die
And now you go
The cold chill cracks, a positive self-detach
Inanimate heart
Hurrying, racing forward
A destined goodbye
Bells rang out the day of your worst fear
Obscure graduation day
Left you but with memories to bear
Lost in hopelessness
Seclusion cut you just as deep as knives
Dissolving the bonds
Time was set to fade away your lives
You said you would always give you love
You said you would always be caring
You said you would never abandon
You said you would
almost every single line applies.
And to show that I'm not exclusively Mikage-obsessed, this song reminds me a lot of Anthy:
artist: Garbage
The Trick is to Keep Breathing
She's not the kind of girl
Who likes to tell the world
About the way she feels about herself
She takes a little time in making up her mind
She doesn't want to fight against the tide
And lately I'm not the only one
I say never trust anyone
Always the one who has to drag her down
Maybe you'll get what you want this time around
Can't bear to face the truth
So sick he cannot move
And when it hurts he takes it out on you
And lately I'm not the only one
I say never trust anyone
Always the one who has to drag her down
Maybe you'll get what you want this time around
The trick is to keep breathing
She knows the human heart
And how to read the stars
Now everything's about to fall apart
I won't be the one who's going to let you down
Maybe you'll get what you want this time around
I won't be the one who's going to let you down
Maybe you'll get what you want this time around
Oh and this one reminds me a lot about the whole Juri/Shiori/Ruka situation:
artist: Garbage
Metal Heart
I wish I had a metal heart
I could cross the line
I wish that I was half as good
As you think I am
But now that we know for sure they're telling lies when they say
No one gets hurt and therefore nobody dies
You know it's hard to believe anything that you hear
They say the world is round
Wish I was as big as you
You'd have to tell the truth
I'd be nothing you could hurt
Nothing you could use
But now that we know for sure they're telling lies when they say
No one gets hurt and therefore nobody dies
You know it's hard to believe anything that you hear
They say the world is round
The world is round?
I want to be dependable, I want to be courageous and good
I want to be faithful so that I can be heroic and true
I want to be a friend you can rely on you can lean on and trust
I want to understand so I can forgive and be willing to love
I wish I wasn't flesh and blood
I would not be scared
Of bullets built with me in mind
For then i could be saved
My sweet lord take care of me for i think i'm done
Kiss my mother on her cheek and lay my burden down
But now that we know for sure they're telling lies when they say
No one gets hurt and therefore nobody dies
You know it's hard to believe anything that you hear
They say the world is round
The world is round

Dollface, wow. I second: that really is Mikage-like.
Another song that suits the Utena atmosphere is the infamous "Sweet Dreams" - but better in Manson's interpretation! And, of course, the main hero here is Akio.
Sweet Dreams Lyrics
Sweet dreams are made of this
Who am I to disagree?
Travel the world and the seven seas
Everybody's looking for something
Some of them want to use you
Some of them want to get used by you
Some of them want to abuse you
Some of them want to be abused
Sweet dreams are made of this
Who am I to disagree?
Travel the world and the seven seas
Everybody's looking for something
Some of them want to use you
Some of them want to get used by you
Some of them want to abuse you
Some of them want to be abused
I wanna use you and abuse you
I wanna know what's inside you
(Whispering) Hold your head up, movin' on
Keep your head up, movin' on
Hold your head up, movin' on
Keep your head up, movin' on
Hold your head up, movin' on
Keep your head up, movin' on
Movin' on!
Sweet dreams are made of this
Who am I to disagree?
Travel the world and the seven seas
Everybody's looking for something
Some of them want to use you
Some of them want to get used by you
Some of them want to abuse you
Some of them want to be abused
I'm gonna use you and abuse you
I'm gonna know what's inside
Gonna use you and abuse you
I'm gonna know what's inside you

Anything written by Yoko Kanno usually puts me in an Utena mood, especially if it's sung by Steve Conte.
Hmmm . . . Utena-ish music . . . Frou Frou definitely. Very shiny. The Postal Service, certain Bjork songs.

The second movement of John Rutter's Magnificat makes me think of Utena, it's taken from an old English folk song.
Of a rose, a lovely rose, of a rose is all my song.
Hearken to me both old and young,
How this rose began to spring.
A fairer rose to mine liking,
In all this world ne know I none.
Of a rose, a lovely rose, of a rose is all my song.
Five branches of that rose there been,
The which we both fair and sheen,
The rose is called Mary, Heaven's queen.
Out of her bosom a blossom sprang.
The first branch was of great honor
That blessed Marie should bear the flower.
There came an angel from Heaven's tower
To break the Devil's bond.
The second branch was great of might,
That sprang up on Christmas night.
The star shone over Bethlem bright,
That man could see it both day and night.
Of a rose, a lovely rose, of a rose is all my song.
The third branch did spring and spread,
Three kingès then the branch-gan led
Unto our Lady in her childbed,
Into Bethlem that branch sprang right.
The fourth branch, it sprang to Hell,
The Devil's power fore to fell
That no soul therein should dwell
The branch so blessed fully sprang.
The fifth branch, it was so sweet.
It sprang to Heav'n both crop and root.
Therein to dwell and be our bote (savior, apparently)
So blessedly it sprang.
Of a rose, a lovely rose, of a rose is all my song.
Pray we to her with great honor,
She that bear the blessed flower
To be our help and our succor
And shield us from the fiendès' bond.

I'm sure I've uploaded both before at some stage, but it's always fun to share.
Anthy and Akio are for me perfectly described in Anika Moa's Flowers For You:
It's a lovely day
A lovely day
It's a pretty old flower
Red and blue
It's the same old typical scenario
Take me away from your terrible lies
Take me away from it all
Show me I'm useful to steal for a while
Show me how to rule the world
No more flowers for you
I could not sacrifice
And he's twisted along
And he's running down the road
To find his lost side
If it takes you away
I could ask you to stay
I can't change who I am
Be forgiven, understand
Does anyone want to reply
Does anyone want to reply?
...and then there's just so much of Nemuro and Mikage in Gramsci's Let It Go:
I could be wrong
I could be right
I could be dangerous
Or walk in light
I could be crowned as a king
Or buried as a pauper
Courted as a wiseman
Or drowned out by their laughter
I could be wrong
But you know I'm right
You could be final
You could be first
You could be everything to me
Chapter and verse
Or you could be anything without me
A life of possibilities awaits you
I could be wrong
But you know I'm right
So we let it go
Why won't you let it go?
...oh, and then Evermore's This Unavoidable Thing Between Us just makes me think of so many of the fucked up relationships in this show:
Between us I feel this undeniable thing
Between us so real this unavoidable thing
Between us I see this undefinable thing, between us
Every time you say the words it's real
And every time you say the words, I feel
The night is long today, my love for you has changed
The night is long today, a hope has been replaced
All the steps we take, the ones that lead away, a little
When we walk away, we only grow more near
When we turn away, it all becomes so clear
This unavoidable thing, joining us
A little too late, a little too soon, a little
To give a little, to take a little, to lose a little
To find a little, to die a little, to live a little
And it won't be long...
'Cause it's falling down, and I'll take you there..

More on Nemuro/Mikage:
Katatonia
Tonight's Decision
who could call my name without regretting
who could see beyond this my darkness
and for once save their own prayers
who could mirror down just a little
of their sun
how could this go so very wrong
that I must depend on darkness
would anyone follow me further down
how could this go so very far
that I need someone to say
what is wrong
not with the world but me
who could call my name without regretting
who could promise to never destroy me
tonight my head is full of wishes
and everything I drink is full of her

What I want most right now is an Utena AMV to Gimme the Prize from Queen's "It's a Kind of Magic." Yes, the Highlander soundtrack. I'm just picturing Akio with these lyrics...
Here I am, I'm the master of your destiny
I am the one the only one, I am the god of kingdom come
Gimme the prize, just gimme the prize
Give me your kings, let me squeeze then in my hands
Your puny princes
Your so called leaders of your land
I'll eat them whole before I'm done
The battle's fought and the game is won
I am the one the only one
I am the god of kingdom come
Gimme the prize just gimme the prize
'I have something to say-- it's better to burn out than to fade away...
There can be only one'
Move over, I said move over
Hey hey hey clear the way
There's no escape from my authority - Didn't I tell you
I am the one the only one, I am the god of kingdom come
Gimme the prize, just gimme the prize
I am the one the only one
I am the god of kingdom come
Gimme the prize
