This is a static copy of In the Rose Garden, which existed as the center of the western Utena fandom for years. Enjoy. :)
Alright, I think we'll give it until tonight for entries, then we'll start guessing. There's still time to enter, so PM me if you'd like to!
If you don't want to enter, you're always welcome to spectate and send in your own guesses.
Edit: Alright, that's the end of submissions! We have six Round 20 players: satyreyes, BioKraze, Katzenklavier, Dalbun, OnlyInThisLight and Riri-kins. Who will be the hardest to guess? Who will win? Excitement, oh boy!
Editx2:Katz, your inbox is full, juss sayin'.

The guesses are in! Round #20 seemed especially challenging, as mostly everyone chose fringe characters. To refresh, our participants were satyreyes, BioKraze, Katzenklavier, Dallbun, OiTL, and Riri-kins. We had one spectator, Rotten Mooring.
For his first round, our resident moderator came off as a worldly, yet tired. Bio felt that satyreyes’s of a previous phase in their life suggested a character who has lived ages – specifically, Anthy or Akio. OiTL, Mooring and Katz felt similarly, but guessed Mrs. Ohtori, Akio and post-show Anthy, respectively. Riri-kins went with Mamiya, but it was Dalbun who noticed that this character “once yearned for eternity but now appreciates transience.” That’s right, satyreyes was none other than Tokiko.
BioKraze is known for picking obscure, off-the-wall characters. This time he was contemplative, but fairly undisturbed. OiTL and Mooring suggested Saionji, which I can definitely see in the first two responses. Satyr also felt Saionji was a possibility, but went with Akio’s planetarium (because Saionji was far too normal for Bio, you see). Movie Anthy, Movie Akio and series Akio were all guessed, but unfortunately, no one was correct, for Bio was Mikage’s Duel Portrait. (And if someone wants to explain to me how that’s different from Professor Nemuro, please do so).
Who could this wild and sensual character of Katzenklavier's be? The overt sauciness seemed to allude to Touga for OiTL, Mooring and Bio. The imperiousness could mean Nanami, as Riri guessed. However, satyr and Dallbun did right when they went for the more aged opulence of Mrs. Ohtori.
Dallbun’s cheeky and flippant persona was guessed as Utena, A-ko, C-ko, and Kozue. But to OiTL and satyr, that much attitude was unmistakably not human. Specifically, it belonged to an elephant.
Inquisitive, willing to lend a hand, mild as milk and just a little bit lonely? That helpful and innocent nature of OnlyInThisLight’s character hinted to Miki, or another young’un like Nanami, Touga or Tsuwabuki. But is that a hint of paternalism there? Some seemed to think so, as Nemuro and Akio were both guessed. Perhaps they were just too unlike anyone else, or they didn’t get enough screen time, but OiTL was actually Miki’s Piano Teacher. (And you know a character is obscure when I forget even their gender).
Rounding out the bunch is our lovely Riri-kins. This queen-bee is coy and way out there. In wanting to stand out, OiTL saw hints of Shiori, while Bio gunned for Wakaba. Katz and Mooring were unsure, but Katz went with Touga. Funnily enough, Dallbun and satyr felt that there were too many Kozue’s last round, so they guessed Movie Shiori and C-ko instead. Better luck next time you two.
The final scores:
Dallbun: 4
Satyreyes: 3
Katzenklavier: 2
OnlyInThisLight: 1
BioKraze, Riri-kins and Rotten Mooring: 0
Again, a very challenging round. Congratulations to Dallbun for winning Round #20 of IWIW! Hope everyone enjoyed my guest-hosting.

So the most-guessed characters... were Mrs. Ohtori... and an elephant.
Katz, I wasn't sure who to pick for you. I was positive you were either Mrs. Ohtori or Malory Archer. I had to remind myself that we are playing a SKU game. As for me, the more I reread my answers, the more I became convinced that I had portrayed adult-Anthy without realizing it, and I was certain that everyone was going to guess adult-Anthy. (Dallbun, thank you for guessing right -- and congratulations!)
OITL you glorious bastard, I was positive you were Tsuwabuki! But oh my God, your answers are so creepy in hindsight. Beautiful.
I like playing this game. Syora, thank you so much for hosting! If you ever want to do it again -- or if anyone else does! -- then go for it! You don't even have to ask first. If you build it, I for one will come.

Thank you - I thought your Tokiko was quite good. I'm shocked at my own win, however. Only in a round like this could I have seized a four-point elephant victory.

Omg, I sucked soooooooooooooooooooooooo hard this round. But Dalbun's elephant entry and everyone's difficult and challenging portrayals made it loads of fun.

I wish I participated this round, but I've been feeling too drained to do anything creative. (Also I'm terrible with world knowledge.)
I was going to spectate vote... and I would have gotten all of you wrong.
Anyway, congrats to Dallbun and everyone who played!

Man, I almost guessed Tokiko for satyr but I saw more of a boy who wished he could live forever. Good job ,my friend.

Mamiya is really close! I could buy that, too, except I don't think he's going to live long enough to visit all those places. I imagined that after he died, Tokiko tried to understand what happened to Mamiya and Nemuro through religion, and never quite could. Kozue was my second guess for you, because she's one of the few members of the cast who might use drugs, especially if they're trendy... but she never really seemed to be about standing out and ruling the roost to me, so I went with C-ko, who's a little more of a blank slate.

I felt that everything Kozue did, she did for attention so a certain someone would notice her. And I thought the picture was a great choice as a souvenir - I can't see her being very sentimental or materialistic. But Kozue is my second favourite character after Wakaba, so I tend to over-analyze her.

GAWDAMN this was a dumbass round for me. My message to Syora consists of me, in equal parts, pondering and swearing. Seriously though, it's really cool because it forced me to look outside the scope of the regular cast. Plus, once I knew the answer, I thought about the charrie in a different way (Tokiko, Miki's Piano Teacher, etc).

DA FUCK???!!! Okay, I might have gotten that one if you had hinted at slaying the infamous feline murderer, but an animal never even crossed my mind. And thus I learn the folly of assumptions.

Hellooooooo IWIW veterans! And any newcomers, natch. I am honored to be hosting the 21st round.

The Rules! To play, pick an Utena character and PM me their identity -- but keep it secret from everyone else! Then, answer the interview questions below in character in a post to this thread. Once everyone who cares to play has posted, I'll call for you to guess who the other players are. You get one point for every player you get right, plus one point for every player who gets you right. Role-play well and guess well, and you'll rack up the points!
Extra Rules! No picking the same character you picked last time you played; no posting "dead giveaways" like the color of your hair or the fact that you're in the fencing club; and finally, if everyone guesses you right, you get only half credit for each correct guess. That means you want to be guessable but not blatantly obvious.
The theme of this round would please Captain Obvious. Your questions:
It's time for spring cleaning. What old things do you cast aside?
Early spring is marked by Sakura Matsuri, the festival of cherry blossoms. As you stroll around in a freshly blooming world, do any thoughts cross your mind?
As the butterflies get their majestic freak on, many young hearts swell with love. Are you getting the flutters?
Good luck!

It's Round 21, actually
It's time for spring cleaning. What old things do you cast aside?
Old wounds. Old grudges. Even old lines, the ones I swore I'd never cross. I won't let the detritus of the past interfere with what I have to do now.
Early spring is marked by Sakura Matsuri, the festival of cherry blossoms. As you stroll around in a freshly blooming world, do any thoughts cross your mind?
Oh, yes. Spring is full of ironies. Cherry blossoms are terribly short-lived, but the rite they're a part of has outlasted anyone. To catch a cherry blossom in your hand is to... participate, I think, in something ancient. I don't know the names of all the others who have caught cherry blossoms, but in that moment, I share something with all of them. Maybe being part of that ritual is a form of immortality. It will have to do.
As the butterflies get their majestic freak on, many young hearts swell with love. Are you getting the flutters?
It's true that my heart is fluttering, but -- well, let's leave it that my desire to get my freak on is another of those things I've cast aside. Whether my heart swells with love, real love, is another matter. I think I have things in their proper perspective now, but there's never been a time in my life when I couldn't have said that -- so, who knows? It wouldn't be the first time I've deluded myself.

Ah, it's time already? Okay, let's have a look and.. oh. Ok, this can go and that... what, where did all of these things come from? This isn't really mine, you know. I don't take care of this sort of thing. It's just piled up in there, oh man, this is going to take all day!
Early spring is marked by Sakura Matsuri, the festival of cherry blossoms. As you stroll around in a freshly blooming world, do any thoughts cross your mind?
I don't think the time of year really changes what I think about, you know? Well, there are definitely some things which remind me of certain stuff or people. So I guess you have a point there. Not cherry blossoms, though, that's a bit too typical. Not that there's anything wrong with liking them or whatever, if that's your thing. They just aren't for me, despite what you might have thought.
As the butterflies get their majestic freak on, many young hearts swell with love. Are you getting the flutters?
I guess that's one way to say it. It's like I said before, it's not really about the time of year. So if I were getting any flutters it wouldn't be because of butterflies or the like. That's not really what I'm concentrating on, either. Why are you even asking about that? I'm busy with all this cleaning now, so...

Hmm, is it Sakura Matsuri already? Well, we should throw a grand party. We'll need a theme, a band, and...hello? WHY ISN'T ANYBODY WRITING ALL OF THIS DOWN? *stomps foot angrily*
As the butterflies get their majestic freak on, many young hearts swell with love. Are you getting the flutters?
Yes, there is someone pure and untouchable who I am destined to be with for all eternity. Now if only that horrible girl would stop getting in my way!

I don't know, I suppose I can get rid of some worthless junk. Maybe some old sheets that have been piling up. But I never let go of anything that I really want.

Those petals are totally reliant on their tree to anchor them. Clinging desperately. But even then, they can only hang on for a little while before they're scattered like dust. It's pathetic.
As the butterflies get their majestic freak on, many young hearts swell with love. Are you getting the flutters?
Letting your heart flutter out of control...? That just makes you weak. I know - I've seen it. Is that what those larvae have been stewing in their cocoons for, all this time? If I became a butterfly, I would fly off somewhere by myself.

Haha, I figured it out! I had to delete a bunch of old IWIW posts that were hiding in the back of my inbox. Okay, at long last, should be working fiiiiine.
If it fills up again, feel free to a complimentary lynching.

Aaaand here are the results for the 12st round! We had one silent sneaky spectator: MintyRainbow!
satyreyes' depiction blended bittersweet nostalgia with potent ambition. While this could describe many of members of the cast, he dropped a couple of particularly revealing hints; seemingly unrequited passion for someone and distinct determination for an urgent and perhaps unsavory goal (breaking old boundaries, "Spring is full of ironies"). This was clearly someone whose time was both essential and limited. Ragnarok noted that Saionji fit the bill. However, Riri-kins, Dallbun, and MintyRainbow were right on the mark with Ruka.
Ragnarok's character, meanwhile, seemed a lot less focused and introspective. With a friendly and casual tone, they filled the answers with mostly inane chatter. However, there were a few very telling bits and pieces. It was clear this person wasn't into metaphors or intangibles, uncomfortable disclosing intimate details, and somewhat considerate of others ("Not that there's anything wrong..."). Also, they revealed a little sentimentality, but not over something typical. Riri-kins aimed well but ultimately missed with Wakaba. Meanwhile, satyreyes and Dallbun were both successfully tipped off by our brief look into Utena's closet. MintyRainbow also scored here, reading Rags' pitch-perfect tone.
Riri-kins made it clear that her character was a queen bee. With short terse answers that exuded entitled pride, it was obvious they expected the world to cater to their every whim. These whims include a penchant for the grand and ostentatious, as well as blatant idealization of their special someone. All three participants and our spectator didn't have a moment's hesitation: unanimously Nanami! Quote: "I think this might be Nanami. Or possibly Nanami. Maybe Nanami."
Finally, Dallbun referenced imagery to frame his somewhat enigmatic portrayal. In a particularly haunting response, his character referred to cherry blossoms as "totally reliant on their tree to anchor them. Clinging desperately." Clearly, this someone resented parasitism and longed for independence. Ironically, however, they asserted that they never released anything they really wanted. Ragnarok touched on the right answer, but eventually settled on a truly interesting guess: Mikage's Elevator. Riri-kins thought Juri. Only satyreyes and MintyRainbow came to the correct conclusion with Movie!Shiori.
1st - satyreyes with 6 points. Guessed everyone. Guessed by Dallbun, Riri-kins, and MintyRainbow.
2nd (tied) - Dallbun with 5 points. Guessed satyreyes, Ragnarok, and Riri-kins. Guessed by MintyRainbow and satyreyes.
2nd (tied) - Riri-kins with 5 points. Guessed satreyes. Guessed by everyone.
3rd - Ragnarok with 4 points. Guessed Riri-kins. Guessed by satyreyes, MintyRainbow, and Dallbun.
Good show everyone! I had a tremendously fun time reading your well-thought answers!
