This is a static copy of In the Rose Garden, which existed as the center of the western Utena fandom for years. Enjoy. :)
Wow, you're right!

The entire Lou Reed album, Magic and Loss plays like an alternate soundtrack to Utena, to me. (Maybe if you start it twenty minutes into the movie, it syncs! )
"The same power that burned Hiroshima
causing three legged babies and death
Shrunk to the size of a nickel
to help him regain his breath
And I was struck by The Power and The Glory"
Lots of old(er) Zombina songs, too, from "She Has No Reflection" and "Let's Get Familiar" to "The First Kiss (Cuts the Deepest)."
From The First Kiss: "I have a confession for you,
You're not my first.
I'm older than i seem, though sometimes i still move too fast,
I'm smarter than i look but i have a chequered past.
I have a confession for you,
You won't be my last..."
and, "Somehow my dress became undone.
The moon stared down in disapproval,
Like a dead man's head forced into a pitch black drain,
Weeping stars to illustrate a glittering release from pain,
From my loveless life. my lifeless love would gleam,
Just like the tears that hang above our heads,
In these wooden beds."
From Let's Get Familiar: "I don't know if I've been thinkin' straight. I've been talkin' to my pets.
But they're cheaper than therapists and they tell it like it is.
How did they know the way I feel?
"What am I supposed to do?
I put all my money on you. Now I'm runnin' from my best excuse.
Still can't get you where I want you. What's a girl supposed to do?
I put all my money on you..."

Just heard this song, thought I'd drop by this thread and leave this here...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rQuExgINlSQ
There's a part of me you'll never know
The only thing I'll never show
Hopelessly I'll love you endlessly
Hopelessly I'll give you everything
But I won't give you up
I won't let you down
And I won't leave you falling
If the moment ever comes
It's plain to see it's trying to speak
Cherished dreams forever asleep
Hopelessly I'll love you endlessly
Hopelessly I'll give you everything
But I won't give you up
I won't let you down
And I won't leave you falling
If the moment ever comes
Hopelessly I'll love you endlessly
Hopelessly I'll give you everything
But I won't give you up
I won't let you down
And I won't leave you falling
But the moment never comes

It is probably for mostly dirty reasons that I think of Planet Log's song about the biggest Johnson of them all, "Tor Johnson" as an SKUish song.
"It's obvious Tor was a method actor. I don't know what method, but I can sing along."

I know there may not be any second round of WIRG mixes at all, but I figure these songs would take time to find/make into mp3 (since I don't have them myself); so, should there actually be a second round, and should I still have the honor to be aided by the wonderful Lex, here is what I have in mind:
Black Rose Arc Image Album (all songs listed are easily searchable on Youtube via artist name + title name as of today)
1) Elliott Smith – Because (covers the Beatles)
[Can play as background score during all those Mikage/Mamiya moments.]
2) Rufus Wainwright (his is the only version I know that could work for SKU) – It’s only a Paper Moon (Musical Standard)
[Akio’s theme song, where lyrics mirror his seduction-through-illusion character.]
(Youtube link included just in case:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHgElwD0VQQ)
3) Malcolm Mclaren - Madame Butterfly (from the opera "Madam Butterfly" by Puccini)
[Background score for those Akio/Kanae moments. Opening instrumental parts perfect for whenever Akio is about to make a grand entrance.]
4) Alanis Morissette - You Oughta Know
[From Kozue to Miki, after seeing his attraction to Anthy.]
5) The Puppini Sisters - Diamonds Are A Girl's Best Friends (covers Marilyn Monroe)
[Nanami Cowbell ep.]
6) The Cardigans - Lovefool
[Shiori seducing Juri, enough said.]
7) Paul Anka - Diana
[For those playful Tsuwabuki/ Nanami-sama scenes.]
8) The White Stripes - Mr. Cellophane
[Tatsuya’s elevator moment.]
9) Randy Newman – I Want You To Hurt Like I Do
[Wakaba’s elevator song.]
10) Petula Clark - The Boy From Ipanema
[Keiko while lusting after Touga.]
11) Carpenters - Nowhere Man (covers the Beatles)
[Tokiko’s song on “Mikage” (and also Akio) upon returning to Ohtori.]
12) Willie Nelson - A Song For You (from Shotgun Willie 1973)
[Mikage in his pre-duel elevator scene, singing to both Tokiko and Mamiya]
(youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OOR5awLuBRU)
13) Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody
[Mikage’s “graduation” song.]
Track now jinxed by # 13, and with no song for the Nanami diary filler ep.
Bonus Track:
Bruce Cockburn (1971 version) - One Day I Walk
[A possible fate for “post-graduation” Mikage.]

Nostalgic already for the WIRG mixes, which were all quite good. While that was going on, I slowly added and cut down and added and cut down a playlist, for my personal enjoyment, to see how I looked at SKU in terms of other music. Final version of the mix was:
1. Rebel Girl - Bikini Kill
2. Planet, Schmanet, Janet - Tsunami Bomb
3. Red Bats With Teeth - Angelo Badalamenti
4. Wolverines (live version) - Queen Adreena
5. If Six Was Nine - Jimi Hendrix
6. Russian Roulette - Van Morrison
7. Warrior King - Lou Reed
8. I've Told Every Little Star - Linda Scott
9. Tabletalk - Adam and his Ants
10. Let Life Be Good to You - Black Oak Arkansas
11. Bad Loser - Naomi and the Boys
12. It Ain't Easy - Bettye Lavette
13. No Nose Job - Digital Underground
14. All That You Have is Your Soul - Tracy Chapman
15. I Am a Rock - Simon and Garfunkel
16. I Hate Danger - Bikini Kill
17. Come on Up To the House - Tom Waits
Clocks in at just about an hour and yeah, I know Bikini Kill is on there twice. Bikini Kill should be on every compilation twice, even if the compilation is The Beach Boys Greatest Hits or whatever. They're important.

Honestly, I always thought that Riot Grrrrl stuff would be perfect for the female characters in SKU, so Bikini Kill is actually perfect.

Florence & the Machine reminds me of Utena, in that the music is beautiful, out-there, and often doesn't make that much sense. And dramatic, don't forget dramatic!

It just occurred to me that someone somewhere had to have made an Akio music video for "Sympathy for the Devil," and I became extremely distressed when I couldn't find one.
Now that's a great idea. And brings back delicious memories of Interview with a Vampire, and other hot men with long hair...

I bought a converter deck to drop tapes to DVD/digital. Once I'm back in the States, I should start converting my old AMVs, including the SKU Stones, Ronnie Spector, and X-Ray Spex ones. I was surprised how easily She Talks to Rainbows went with both Utena/Anthy and Juri/Shiori even if it's stretching both a bit. Mutates them.

Little sister - Thou shall not fall
Come to your brother - Thou shall not die
Unchain me, sister - Thou shall not fear
Love is with your brother

Operation:Mindcrime has been my favorite album since I was in elementary school, and although it has almost nothing to do with Utena, I still associate 'Operation Mindcrime' with Mikage and 'The Mission' with Akio.

I shall always associate Bee Gee's Melody Fair with that evil, evil scene in Ep 39 where "Dios" mocked Utena's femininity from where he posed upon the merry go round.
Relevant bits from Melody Fair's lyrics:
Who is the girl at the window pane, watching the rain falling down?
Melody, life isn't like the rain ; its just like a merry go round.
Melody Fair won't you comb your hair? You can be beautiful too.
Melody Fair , remember you're only a woman .
Melody Fair, remember you're only a girl. Ah...

Hey, Touga. I have a song for you.
Well, aside from the Oedipal implications, 'cause the boy's clearly given up on his parents.
In favor of parental substitutes...
And OH LOOK, I've found another part of me that wants to introduce Akio's face to Mister Crowbar. Hmm. I wonder if that's a healthy impulse.
Offline
'The Beautiful People' is so Utena, someone already made an AMV. Damn it.

Hah, I was thinking about that earlier. It's too bad about the Oedipal implications, or that song could make for a good Utena AMV.

For a moment, I thought you're talking about "A Song for You" from Willie Nelson (which I always think of a a Mikage song). Then I pressed the link, and am impressed by the wit behind your choice

It might apply more to my post-series headcanon, but this song... it's been a while since I heard it, and then I stuck an old mix CD of mine in the truck (I was getting tired of sea shanties, long story) and I was like, wow, this sounds like something Touga would say. But thickly coated in Christian techno-pop glitter.
...
...
I would pay good money to see him dance to it. Which is, of course, an invitation for someone to photoshop his head onto a duck and make a video of it bouncing around to the beat. Totally a thing that needs to happen.

For reasons, Duke Ellington's The Single Petal of a Rose tricks me into thinking it is from an SKU soundtrack when I hear it.

I shall shamelessly necro this thread in order to add my opinion that several of Emilie Autumn's songs are absolutely perfect for Anthy or Anthy/Utena. "Rose Red" is probably the most blatant:

There's also "Castle Down":

And "Opheliac":

As well as "God Help Me":
