This is a static copy of In the Rose Garden, which existed as the center of the western Utena fandom for years. Enjoy. :)
Hey everybody! DIDJA MISS ME????
Haw, kidding...
Anywho... I thought it would be cool to see what some of us are inspired by... other than Utena.
My muses are Oscar Wilde, Jhonen Vasquez, Aaron A, Ellen DeGeneres, Anthony Bourdain, Jennifer DeGuzman, Salvador Dali, Edward Gorey, and Bjork.
How about you???

Hiiiiii! Welcome back!
I get inspiration from out of nowhere. Mostly it's music, and sometimes just weird random thoughts/remarks/conversations that make me think. And my dreams too, whenever I can remember them.

Oh, yeah... that happens to me all the time... especially when I hear snippets of conversations that are really unusual.

I missed you soo much....
I was about to start a "hyacinth_black" shrine thread, but.....
But seriously, who inspire me are um....
Maya Angelou, Oprah, FDR's wife(I can't remember her name for the life of me), Spike Lee, and some others..
In fact, I was reading the thumbnail version of Utena the Movie, and it inspired me to make one for the entire show..except, I have no idea how to do it..but I mean, if anyone knows or wants to help me...please feel free to reply.

Nice lists people! Utena fans are so intelligent, and well-rounded!!!
My two favorite O's already mentioned. I will definately include Oscar Wilde and Oprah!
Add Mattie, who Oprah interviewed so often, the little boy who died of terminal illness who wrote poetry and learned martial arts while he was tethered to oxygen!
Mother Teresa: I'm no Catholic, but I sure respect the way she held those dying people in her arms.
The music of Tori Amos, and music in general.
The Sermon on the Mount & the Beatitudes, other little snippets from the Bible about love: helps me to treat people right.
The death of my closest male relative, a Marine who died April 05' at age 26: left The Standard for all other relationships in my life, left an eternal hole, but gave me faith in the afterlife.
Charles Dickens: made me realize I could fall in love with books.
Bernard Shaw: changed the way I viewed books.
Quotable quotes: I love quotes, memorize them, and they fall into my head during almost every situation.
Seinfield: eye-opening humor.
Various artist too numerous to mention: instead of being a little froggie who lives in the bottom of a well, who only knows the view above the well, now I feel like I have seen the whole sky. (oops, call in a cook, cheesy )

HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT ME NOW?
Ah...umm...for me...mostly Jean-Luc Godard. I don't generally find myself being inspired by many people, but every time I watch a movie he's directed I'm suddenly so full of ideas. T.S. Eliot's writing really inspires me also...it makes me want to be a really good writer. And the beat writers inspire me a lot too, esp Jack Kerouac and William S Burroughs. (The latter of which I apparently do a fantastic impression of.) I want to...learn how to craft things so that they stick in people's hearts, when I read their work.
Artwork with strange anatomy or softly surreal images (by softly surreal I mean...like...someone wearing a blank mask or holding a sliced apple or biting into a hot dog bun full of dripping fish, so it kind of sets off warning bells but doesn't feel weighty and over-strong) always makes me want to create beautiful and interesting images.
And I guess this isn't a person, but Hinduism, the religion...something about learning about it, looking at the statues, reading the texts--I feel really connected and safe and...uh...flowy? And I feel really full of creative energy. That sounds awfully cheesy, but I don't really know how else to word it.
I love theatre, too, and well-crafted plays always fill me with ideas.
Oh! And also this absolutely fucking amazing fantasy series by Roger Zelazny--the Chronicals of Amber. Probably the best series of books I have ever read ever in my entire life. Really classy and strong. It is amazing.

Eleanor.
Sir John Everett Millais, Gil Elvgren, R.K. Milholland, Michael Turner, Marc Silvestri, Chris Carrabba, are probably the people whose material I consume most voracioausly and from whom I draw a lot of creative ideas...as for inspiration...?
Probably my parents, for everything they've gone through, and my closest friends, who've stood by me through the worst, and who I can only hope that I've supported even half as much as they have me. My wonderful guy who's gotten me through some awful times.
And whoever translated the Kama Sutra? He's like. My hero.

I MISSED U. :ZOMGKISSUGL00MP:
Depends on the inspiration (moar liek heros). Here goes nothin'.
Tom Waits - The man manages to make a highly sucessful career basically doing whatever the fuck he wants.
Kurt Vonnegut: The pattern emerges. I'll be really sad when he goes.
Buckminster Fuller - I have a thing for self-made geniuses. They make me want to do more with myself.
Hunter S. Thompson/Ben Stein/John Lithgow/Richard P. Feynman/Harry Truman/MY DAD- Second verse, same as the first. Sucessful irreverence FTW. All of these guys had/have amazing careers and none of them take/took themselves seriously all the time.
German/Slavic folk tales - Nothing makes me want to write more. I go nuts over those things.
Folk music from the same area - Nothing makes me want to compose more.
Narrative music in general - Two tastes that go great together.
Biblical/Medieval art - A lot of that stuff is basically proto-guro.
I'm inspired by a lot of stuff.

+1000 points! I've always felt we had a special closeness you & I!
There's a festival around here called "Dickens on the Strand" where people get together, dress in the time period and re-enact events from the Dicken's books. Next time I attend, I'm claiming that a relative of his is my closest friend in all the world! I'll be the belle of the ball. Thanks, dearest friend.
Just teasing!
I'm glad to see so many unique perspectives, again I'm making a list of interesting new things to learn about from all of your responses.

Ahaha I ditto the sentiments on Tom Waits.
I'm inspired by.. good writers for one... too many to list. Gotta admit Utena inspires me as an artist and writer. Ikuhara is my god. Also inspired by anyone with true perseverence and individuality.
And I'm most inspired by Hard Gay... he's got the sort of "Say say say!" that rocks my world. Hooooooooo!

Little Astrid has been such an inspiration in my life. He puts up with such constant abuse from those fuckfaces AIV, and works so hard to keep this family together even when so much of the world tries to tear us apart.
He tought me that I don't have to fall into the standards that my parents or my friends set. Everyone thinks that they're so XCOOOORE and badass, like the whole world is keeping them down and they're anti-everything. Those are the first to go in my book. No matter how individual you think you are, we all follow our friends. You can reply all you want to this saying you don't, but you do. I promise you do. And its not like it's a horrible thing or whatever, but it's just what we all do by nature. You may seem like the leader of your group, but when you start calling the shots, its what your friends like that comes to mind first. ANYWAY, Astrid showed me that I can have more friends than the ones I have, that I can stand up without shoving them off. I have my circle of best friends in the world, and I have my SiHK family. Both are precious to me like you could never understand.
He shows us the prize but lets us find our path. The Green Halo Park. The second star to the right. The seven doors. 57xt474.
Codes are painted out in clear view, but they solutions are different for every one of us. I can stay a child as long as I want. And in the end, I know I'll always have the SiHK kids to fall back on. They helped me up, but I have to stand on my own. It's just nice to know that I have someone there to hold my hand, just in case I start to slip. We believe in peace and unity, and in the simple innocence that comes with childhood, before the adult world is forced upon you. I guess you could call us the reverse Tsuwabuki.
Along with what others said, music is a big inspiration for me, particularly Astrid Haven, Dir en grey, and Streifte Geist.

*casts resurrect*
I ran across this article the other day, and I had to share it. This woman is incredible, inspiring, and I only hope that someday I will have this kind of courage.
A crusade against pedophiles has made Cacho, who will be in Washington tomorrow and Tuesday to be honored by Amnesty International, one of Mexico's most celebrated and imperiled journalists. She is a target in a country where at least 17 journalists have been killed in the past five years and that trailed only Iraq in media deaths during 2006. Do-gooders and victims want to meet her, want to share their stories. Bad guys -- well, they want her in a coffin.
In the spring of 2005, Cacho published a searing exposé of the child abuse and pornography rings flourishing amid the $500-a-night resorts and sugar-white beaches of Cancun. Her book "The Demons of Eden: The Power That Protects Child Pornography" chronicles in cringe-inducing detail the alleged habits of wealthy men whose sexual tastes run to 4-year-old girls.

Everything inspires me. From BioKrazes writtings to seeing someone else's ink. From a wisker out of place when my cat yawns to watching my husband get ready to go to work. I find insperation everwhere. And then I think of new tattoos I can get and where I would place them. Or how I could make those same designs into cross stitch designs or quilts. The mind is always going in an artistic manner.
Drives BioKraze insane. Sorry Son of mine. You live with a very old Art Major

I'm inspired by my mom. The last one to post here. Yeah. Lady Lortab. Besides, if it weren't for her, I wouldn't be posting here, now am I correct?

That's right, Bio. If it weren't for her, you wouldn't be alive to meet us all. The same goes for my mother, too, whom I shall love and cherish as well
But I have other people who become my inspiration:
My aunt and uncle, now in Beijing, who work day and night to stop illegal drug trade for the UN.
My aunt in California, who has been a strong an independent woman all her life and a wonderful sister/mother figure for all her younger brothers and sisters, even though her cackling is very weird sometimes.
And, pop-culture wise, I've been inspired by J-pop, a lot:
1. Hideaki Anno- for daringly explore the depths of human consciousness and the meaning to be a human.
2. Kunihiro Ikuhara- for showing the meaning of growing up and evolve
3. Nobuo Uematsu- for his beautiful Wagnerian scores in video games which brought colors to my dreams
4. CLAMP- for teaching me what it means to love and be loved, and what it means to live not only for other people, but for myself, as well.
5. Miyazaki Hayao- for giving me a reason to fill my life with dreams and imaginations.
6. Hamasaki Ayumi- for helping me to stand up in my life since Junior year in high school.
7. Olivia Lufkin- for her out-of-the-world music that kept my, as well as many others', inner child alive.
8. Tsuchiya Anna- for bringing life into rock music for me.
9. Angela Aki- for her emotional and expressive piano playing that helps me burst from time to time.
10. Yazawa Ai- for painting the delicately and intricately beautiful ties of human bonds.
11. J.A. Seazer- for his playful yet meaningful lyrics that has made Utena the masterpiece it is, and strengthen the days of my revolution.
